Copernicus Sentinel 3 marine data Sentinel 3 SRAL (Altimetry) SLSTR (SST) OLCI (Ocean Colour) Builds on heritage but with improved resolution and sensors. 3a (since Feb 2016), 3b (launched 25 th April) Currently in ESA managed tandem phase Operated and marine data processed by EUMETSAT Many applications for ocean research and commercial operations.
Sentinel 3a and 3b Double the data better revisit time. Opportunities for intercalibration Currently in tandem phase Test data available through S3VT
Altimetry Level 1 products available for retracking Level 2 products including Along track altimetry waveforms Derived products of: Sea Surface Height Significant Wave Height Wind Speed
Sea Surface Temperature Level 1 Brightness temperatures (S1-S6) and radiances (S7-S9), fire bands (F1 and F2). Level 2 GHRSST L2 PSST and quality flags, meterological parameters, error statistics
Ocean Colour Level 1 top of atmosphere radiance Level 2 Water products (and quality flags): Open ocean: Spectral reflectance, [Chlorophyll], diffuse attenuation coefficient. Complex water: [Chlorophyll], absorption of CDOM and detritus, [total suspended matter]
Sentinel-3 applications Sentinel-3 is the workhorse of satellite oceanography amongst the Copernicus satellites. Sensors can be used independently and in synergy for a wide range of societally relevant applications.
Sentinel-3 Synergy
S3 applications: Physical ocean dynamics Operational ocean model validation with SRAL SSH in the Gulf of Riga (Vilnis Frishfelds, training, 2018). SRAL & OLCI: detection of internal waves (Santos- Ferreira et al., 2018) upwelling dynamics, False Bay, South Africa (Renae Logston, 2017).
S-3 applications: Human activities Hotspots from oil/gas works in the Persian Gulf detected in SLSTR night data (Caseiro et al., 2018) SLSTR SST data at popular recreation locations in the Gulf of Riga. Start ups using Sentinel 3 data for fishing and shipping business optimisation.
S3 applications: Weather and climate Tropical Storm Maria from SLSTR Sea level rise from satellite altimeters, now including SRAL on Sentinel-3
S-3 Ocean colour applications Aquaculture Chlorophyll product used to detect high biomass blooms in coastal environment, west coast of South Africa. Forms part of government Operation Phakisa initiatives (Marie Smith) OLCI spectral data used to classify waters at risk of different Harmful Algal Bloom species including Pseudonitzschia (Andrey Kurekin) Chlorophyll concentrations for detecting blooms in Greek waters powerful combination with Sentinel 2 (S3 higer temporal and spectral characteristics, S2 higher spatial resolution) (Andromachi Kikaki, Riga 2018)
S-3 applications: Understanding ecosystems OLCI: Herring Spawn off Vancouver Island (Maycira Costa) Alboran gyre identified in SST, and OLCI: Coccolithophore bloom, North Sea resultant influences on chl concentration (Luisa Lamas)
S-3 applications: Human Health OLCI data used to develop cholera potential indicators, here Kerala, India (Hayley Evers- King, Marie Fan, Shuba Sathyendranath) OLCI data used to assess water quality in Guanabara Bay, Brazil (Daniel Tremmel Maia)
Applications from African trainees
