CESM Project Based on 20+ Years of model development and application CESM Governance BioGeo- Chemistry CESM Advisory Board CESM Scientific Steering Committee Polar Climate Land Ice CESM is primarily sponsored by the National Science Foundation with other agencies Most working groups have winter/spring meetings. Annual meeting in June ( 350 participants). Atmosphere Model Chemistry- Climate Ocean Model Paleo- Climate Software Engineering CESM Whole Atmosphere Societal Dimensions Climate Variability and Change Land Model 7

Atmospheric composition in CESM (1) All versions discussed here are using the same code base, selecting components/physics/ through compsets Atmospheric vertical extent (standard configurations) Low-top (40 km): CAM High-top (150 km): WACCM Space weather (500 km): WACCM-X Can be used in fully-coupled, specified SSTs/SICs or specified dynamics configurations (usually MERRA) -> always coupled to land model Different dynamical cores available: FV/FV3, SE, MPAS 8

Atmospheric composition in CESM (2) Chemistry is based on MOZART and is flexible in its complexity (troposphere -> ionosphere) Chemistry is coupled to Modal Aerosol Model (MAM4/MAM7) -> aerosol indirect effect VBS included to represent SOA Volcanic aerosols from SO 2 emissions Specified emissions available through netcdf files (usually monthly, but flexible) Wet removal uses Neu and Prather; tied to hydrological cycle 9

Atmospheric composition in CESM (3) Coupling to land model Dry deposition (O 3 impact on stomatal conductance) Nitrogen (NOy/NHx) deposition impacts carbon/nitrogen cycle Black carbon deposition on snow Biogenic emissions (currently MEGAN v2.1) Dust emissions Fire emissions (incl. vertical redistribution, following M. ValMartin) from interactive fire model Wetland CH 4 emissions 10

Atmospheric composition in CESM (4) Coupling to ocean (specified or interactive) Dry deposition Nitrogen deposition impacts carbon/nitrogen cycle Black carbon deposition on sea-ice Sea-salt emissions Halogen emissions (specified-only) DMS (but not with latest BGC) 11

Typical applications Long-term simulations (historical, future, paleo-climate; e.g. CMIP6) Change in emissions, land-use, LLGHGs/ODSs Internal variability Short-term/campaign simulations Specified dynamics (incl. forecasts) Data assimilation (incl. CO/aerosols) through ensemble Kalman filter DART 12

CMIP6: simulation breakdown CESM2-CAM6-1 o : 17,000 years CESM2-WACCM6-1 o : 5,000 years Ozone, oxidants, volcanic/strat. aerosols, nitrogen deposition WACCM (fixed SSTs) CAM (coupled) CAM/MAM4: 20+ sypd (1 o, 32L) WACCM: 6 sypd (1 o,70l, 228 sp.) WACCM (fixed SSTs) CAM (coupled) BGC spinup Land only BGC spinup Ocean only 500 years 200 years 13

CESM2 Regional refinement Regional-refinement in CAM6 (AMIP) with the Spectral Element (SE) and MPAS dynamical cores (effort led by A. Gettelman and C. Zarzycki) Precipitable water Sept 23-Oct 3, 111 km -> 14 km Slide from C. Zarzycki 14

Some numbers on CESM 0.25 o, 1 o and 2 o resolutions 30 minute time step (for 1 o and 2 o ) 32 atmosphere levels (70 for WACCM) 60 ocean levels (0.1 o or 1 o ) 25 ground layers ~5 million grid boxes at 1 o resolution >1.5 million lines of computer code Data archived (monthly, daily, hourly) for hundreds of geophysical fields Utilized by hundreds of scientists all around the world 18
