5 Temperature for summer 2010 In summer 2010, many area of the world experienced high temperatures. In Japan, It is the highest since JMA s records began in seasonal temperature anomalies for JJA 2010 Long-term Three-monthly change mean in seasonal temperature temperature normalized anomalies by its standard for summer deviation from 1898 for to summer 2010 in 2010 Japan. The figure indicates averaged in 5!5 grid boxes. The thresholds of each category are -1.28,-0.44,0,+0.44 and

6 in the Northern Hemisphere respectively. The values for 1998 and 1988 were the second and fourth highest, respectively N )calculated from 60N )calculated from thickness ( hpa).

7 Ocean Condition In summer 2010, a La Niña event started, following the El Niño period that ended in spring The image cannot be displayed. 9 Convective activity Asian summer monsoon is active in second half of summer 6/1-7/15 7/16-8/30 Outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) anomaly (unit: W/m2) Cold and warm shading indicates enhanced and suppressed convective activity, respectively, in relation to the normal.

10 Statistic analysis for the subtropical jet stream near Japan When convective activity is enhanced over Asian monsoon region, the subtropical jet stream near Japan tends to shift northward of its normal position. OLR 7/16-8/ Linear regression coefficients of OLR(10 20N,60 140E) and 200-hPa zonal wind speed for July and August The shading shows a 95% confidence level based on F-testing.

13 Conclusion the Advisory Panel on Extreme Climate Events (3th September 2010 ) SUMMARY ① The highest zonally averaged tropospheric air temperature in the Northern Hemisphere (delayed effect of the El Niño and partly effects of the La Niña) ② Pronounced Pacific High over Japan due to enhanced convection over the Indian Ocean and surrounding seas. ③ Less-than-usual development of the Okhotsk High.
