From Knowledge Genera/on To Science-based Innova/on Efficient Delivery of Forecasts to a Nau/cal Sports Mobile Applica/on with Seman/c Data Services Authors: Ricardo Amorim (1), Artur Rocha (2), Marco Oliveira (2), Cris/na Ribeiro (1) Affilia/on: (1) Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto/INESC TEC, (2) Ins/tuto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Tecnologia e Ciência (INESC TEC) Speaker: Artur Rocha (artur.rocha@inesctec.pt), INESC TEC C3S2E 2016, July, Porto, Portugal Research and Technological Development Technology Transfer and Valorisa/on Advanced Training Consul/ng Pre-incuba/on of Technology-based Companies 1

Summary Context Background Informa6on (previous projects) State of the art for distributed forecasts: Forecasts and chosen Applica6on domain Seman6cs in data Seman6c data services Problems statement Methods & implementa6on: Seman6c data fusion End user data visualiza6on Results Conclusions and Future Work C3S2E 2016, July, Porto, Portugal 2

Background Informa6on Several OGC/INSPIRE compliant services in place from different partners in RAIA: WMS: map service for portrayal (raster); WFS: features of interest, such as beaches, places for barnacle fishing (ayributes and geometry in GML/KML); THREDDS, WCS: coverages, maps under the form of grid (forecasts, other mul6- dimensional spa6otemporal products); SOS: 6me series API for sensor data. C3S2E 2016, July, Porto, Portugal 3

SoTA: Distributed Forecasts & Applica6on Domain Data flow for Forecast data Surf & Kitesurf Applica/on Domain C3S2E 2016, July, Porto, Portugal 4

SoTA: Seman6cs in data (NetCDF) NetCDF is a de facto Standard Adequate for voluminous mul6-variable (and mul6- temporal) geographic coverage data sets such as forecasts; Uses underlying UNIDATA Common Data Model with intrinsic geospa6al traits (CRS); Uses a common vocabulary: CF standard names, which also contain clear rules on how to derive new variable names (1) Conven6on available at: hyp://cfconven6ons.org/ standard-names.html (1) [surface] [component] standard_name [at surface] [in medium] [due to process] [assuming condi6on] C3S2E 2016, July, Porto, Portugal 5

SoTA: Seman6c data services (THREDDS Data Server) THREDDS Data Server implements several standard seman6callyrich APIs to access data (WMS, WFS, WCS, etc) Partners agreed to use at least version 1.4 of CF vocabulary (most using CF 1.6) Metadata accessible according to ISO C3S2E 2016, July, Porto, Portugal 6

Problems statement Seman6cs extracted from data à problem solved? Using a controlled vocabulary AND a common underlying model helps; Having standard APIs also helps. 1) How about spa6al and temporal resolu6on? 2) How to handle visualiza6on in devices with limited capabili6es? C3S2E 2016, July, Porto, Portugal 7

Seman6c data fusion Intermediate processing service: Extracts variables (with standard names and long names) from datasets; Extracts temporal and spa6al extents; Clip datasets to minimum common spa6al extent; Select forecasts for common 6me periods; Use a stride to reduce spa6al resolu6on to a sensible grid size C3S2E 2016, July, Porto, Portugal 8

End user data visualiza6on Constraints: Bandwidth; Screen size à Most implementa6ons use a tabular view From previous prototypes àinterface was validated àusers react posi6vely to anima6ons However: àthey tend to be data intensive Methods: Overview (Surf Quality Index) à detailed spot view Take advantage of WMS API (light) to provide a background layer to convey the overview of the main informa6on (wave significant height) Use anima6ons for wind (and wave direc6on) C3S2E 2016, July, Porto, Portugal 9

Results 1) Nau6Cast App main screen: sport selec6on 2) Simplified view, with Surf Quality Index 3) Detailed view, with forecasts for a specific region C3S2E 2016, July, Porto, Portugal 10

Conclusions and Future work Global forecasts are not adequate to the coast: à Use distributed local forecasts à Leverages on well-known encodings, Applica6on is driven by seman6cs extracted from data: à Used for surf and kitesurf, but could be anything else Intermediate processing service can provide the necessary domain-specific adapta6on à Can provide further customiza6ons Interface in mobile device can s6ll evolve (and has been evolving) C3S2E 2016, July, Porto, Portugal 11
