Pollite are one of the very few companies that have conducted full scale frangibility and deflection tests on their products according to FAA and ICAO stipulations. The full compliance of our masts has been certified by an independently recognised FAA and ICAO aviation testing house. All our products are regularly assessed and our processes audited to ensure our continued compliance with ICAO and FAA requirements. 4 FRANGIBILITY Pollite ensures you comply fully with ICAO s very latest 2006 Frangibility requirements (Doc 9/57 AN/901 Aerodrome Design Manual pt 6 Frangibility First Edition 2006). According to ICAO requirements any approach lighting structure required to be frangible should be designed to withstand the static and operational/survival wind loads with a suitable factor of safety but should break, distort or yield readily when subjected to the sudden collision forces of a 3000 kg aircraft airborne and travelling in any direction at 140km/h. At the point of collision The support structure should not impose a force on the aircraft in excess of 45kN. The energy imparted to the aircraft should not exceed 55kJ over the contact period. And The impacted structure should give way to the passage of the aircraft in a manner such that the latter may still achieve a successful landing, take-off or missed approach. Pollite have successfully undertaken a series of full scale impact tests at speeds of 140km/h using a high speed vehicle mounted with impactor. Impact data has been recorded independently using load cells, high speed cameras and speed monitors and on all occasions tests have been witnessed by ICAO and FAA recognised aviation testing houses Sequenced images show the Pollite mast being impacted at 140km/h DEFLECTION & WIND SPEEDS UV & SALT SPRAY TESTING In accordance with ICAO and FAA requirements Pollite poles are manufactured to withstand significant windspeeds but to minimise deflection. Independently witnessed tests undertaken on our poles have demonstrated that they fulfil the following requirements; Deflection of the light beam by less than +/- 2 degrees in the vertical axis and +/- 5 degrees in the horizontal in a windspeed of 60mph with a 12.5mm coating of ice on the pole. Withstand windspeeds of up to 75mph with a 12.5mm coating of ice and 100mph without the ice coating. Pollite have tested all components on their frangible masts to ensure they do not deteriorate under intensive Ultra Violet rays and equally in environments where there is considerable salt in the atmosphere. Solar Radiation Testing Following FAA guidelines outlined in FAA AC 150/ C Pollite have placed all non metallic components on our masts under intense and prolonged solar radiation to check for structural deterioration in the product. Test results have shown that despite concentrated exposure the component structures that form the Pollite mast did not deteriorate. Salt Spray The purpose of this test is to measure the structural performance of the Pollite mast when exposed to a corrosive salt laden environment. 48 hours of constant exposure followed by 48 hours of drying is advised by FAA AC 150/ C in order to identify any evidence of damage, rust, pitting or corrosion. On completion of this test the Pollite mast and base arrangement showed no sign of deterioration, complying fully with the FAA s requirements in this area.

7 FRANGIBILE WINDSOCK MASTS Windsock Mast Design Criteria Pollite windsock masts have been developed to fully comply with the ICAO Annex 14 Vol 1 Wind direction Indicator requirements and the most recent frangibility stipulations detailed in ICAO Aerodrome Design Manual Part 6. In addition Pollite provide windsock masts that comply with the CAA s CAP168 and the FAA s AC 150/ D type L-806 and 807 design criteria All Pollite Windsock masts are manufactured from glassfibre and polyester resin, finished with a UV resistant gel coat that can be coloured to any aviation specification. Each pole has a unique break system incorporated within the main mast that has been fully tested and independently certified as frangibility compliant by a leading aviation testing house. The windsock is attached to the mast by means of a lightweight mounting frame holding the throat of the windsock fully open. The frame and sock freely rotate around the mast using stainless steel roller bearings giving a clear indication of wind direction particularly in lighter wind conditions. Standard Mast Heights: Pollite manufacture a range of standard ICAO, FAA and CAA compliant mast heights. Base Fixing All Pollite windsock masts come complete with a unique hinged foot which allows for easier raising and lowering of the mast for servicing the lighting or windsock. 8 WEATHER & NOISE MONITORING MASTS Pollite supplies frangible masts for anemometers and other weather monitoring equipment. Our masts are installed at numerous airfield locations around the world and the fixings can be adapted to work with equipment from most leading manufacturers. The universal height standard for anemometers is 10.0 metres but Pollite masts can also be supplied at alternative heights to suit local requirements. Pollite anemometer masts come complete with obstruction light and lightning conductor. In addition, the cross arm (and further optional cross arms) can be adapted to accommodate additional pieces of monitoring equipment. Frangible masts from Pollite are also frequently adapted and used to house airfield noise monitoring equipment. Related recording equipment cabinet can be mounted on a separate shorter frangible pole, adjacent to the main mast. Raising and lowering of anemometer / microphone masts is aided by a portable winch mechanism (optional), which can be mounted on the same foundation pad as the masts and enables a one-man maintenance operation.
