General 1.1 This specification Covers the construction, properties, testing and packing of Twin Jumper Wire for use in cross- connection cabinets and Main Distribution Frames used in the Kuwait MOC distribution network. The abbreviated wire designation shall be Jumper Wire. 2. Associated Documents International Standards of the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) and the International Electro- Technical Commission (IEC) have been used when available. 2.1 Where international standards are not available, standards in accordance with ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), and BS (British Standards Institute) have been specified. The latest issues shall apply and deemed to be integral parts of this specification. A Tenderer proposing any other standard shall include the standard in his proposal for approval. 2.2 The following standards have been referred to in this specification: MOC G 30:10.01 Tests and Inspections -Manufacture MOC G 40:10:01 Tests and Inspections - Local IEC Publication 28 International Standard of Resistance for Copper. 3 3. Temperature And Environment 3.1 The jumper wire shall retain the electrical and mechanical properties detailed on this specification over a working temperature range of -6 degrees C to + 89 degrees C. 3.2 The jumper wire shall suffer no deterioration from contact with corrosive elements found naturally in dust or the atmosphere. 3.3 In cross connection cabinet environments jumper wire may be subject to an ambient air temperature as high as degrees C for approximately eight hours per day over a period of five months of the year. Manufacturers should state the capability of the materials used for conductor insulation to resist oxidization and/or degradation in this environment. Evidence of long-term aging tests will be required to substantiate any information provided. 4. Conductor 4.1 Each conductor shall consists of a solid wire annealed copper smoothly drawn, circular in cross-section, pliable, uniform in quality, free from all defects uniformly coated with tin. The conductor diameter shall be within the limits prescribed below which. conform to a variation of + or -4%. Nominal mm Conductor Diameter Minimum mm Maximum mm The conductor shall be entirely free from kinks. No joint shall be made into the conductor except that of an accidental break. Such a joint- shall be made by a standard method approved by M.O.C. and shall fulfill the following conditions: 4.2 The tensile strength of a 250 mm length of a conductor containing a joint shall not be less than 90% of that of a similar conductor free from joints. 4.3 The electrical resistance of a 150 mm length of conductor containing a joint shall not be more than 105% of that of a similar conductor free from joints. 4.4 Minimum Conductivity of copper The minimum conductivity shall conform to the IEC Standard for annealed copper i.e. IEC Publication No.28, Section I, the requirements of which are detailed below: (a) (b) (c) (d) At a temperature of 20 C, the resistance of standard annealed copper wire 1 metre in length and of a uniform section of one square milimiter is 1/58 Ohm ( Ohm). At a temperature or 20 C, the density of standard annealed copper is 8.89 grams per cubic centimeter. At a temperature of 20 C, the "constant mass" temperature coefficient of resistance of standard annealed copper, measured between two potential points rigidly fixed' to the wire, is / per degree centigrade. Consequently, it follow from above clauses that a temperature of 20 C, the resistance of wire of standard annealed copper of a uniform section one meter in length and weighing one gram is (1/58) x 8.89 = ohms The Manufacturer shall provide certified test data in respect of the quality of copper used. 4.5 Tinning of Conductors. The annealed copper shall be uniformly coated with pure tin. The tinned wire shall be thoroughly clean and shall satisfy the solder test detailed in IEC Publication Clause 4.7 and presulphate test, detailed in this specification 3 of 6

4 5. Conductor Insulation 5.1 The conductors shall be uniformly and continuously insulated with a high grade PVC extrusion compound, accurately centered to a nominal radial thickness of 0.3 mm. 5.2 The PVC shall be in general, in accordance with or equivalent to BS 6746 and satisfy the appropriate tests laid down in IEC Publications and The PVC shall not be loose on the conductor, but it shall be possible to strip the complete insulation from the conductor leaving the conductor in a condition sufficiently clean to permit satisfactory soldered connections to be made to terminals without further cleaning. 5.4 The PVC covering shall be applied so as to provide a close fitting, smooth, continuous, flexible and abrasion resistant covering. 5.5 The minimum thickness of the PVC insulation at any point shall be not less than 80% of the nominal thickness. 5.6 The PVC covering of jumper wire shall be colored in the following manner: i) Red Ll ( A ) Leg For normal circuit White L2 (B) Leg use on cabinets and MDF's. ii) Yellow Ll ( A) For Special circuit use Blue L2 ( B) on MDF's. Colors shall conform to IEC Publication Cancelled. 5.8 The minimum of the measured values of tensile strength shall be not less than 19 Newtons and the minimum of the measured values at elongation to break shall be 125%. IEC 189-2, Clause The difference between the minimum values for tensile strength and elongation obtained before and after aging shall not exceed 20% of the average values before accelerated aging. IEC Clause Twinning One red and one white conductor or one yellow and one blue conductor shall be uniformly twinned together with a right hand lay between the limits mm. 7. Electrical Requirements At 20 Degrees Centigrade 7.1 Resistance: At a temperature of 20 C the resistance of each conductor shall be maximum 96 ohms/km. 7.2 Resistance Unbalance : The difference in resistance between the conductors in a pair shall not exceed 5% of the maximum value of the resistance of a single conductor in the pair Insulation Resistance : Sample lengths of the completed wire not less than 10 metres in length shall be immersed in water for one hour at the temperatures detailed below: After steady electrification for up to one minute at a voltage of 500 volts DC the insulation resistance measured between conductor and water shall not be less than the following. Water Temperature 20 C - 80 Mohms/Km Spark Tests The PVC insulated conductor shall withstand a spark test of 3000 volts R.M.S. at 50 Hz when applied. between the conductor and the outer surface of the insulation. MOC Requirement. 7.5 In each length of completed wire the insulation between conductors shall be capable of withstanding for 3 seconds an AC potential of not less than 12 KV. 4 of 6

5 8. Mechanical Requirements 8.1 Tensile Strength and Elongation Tests-Conductor Tensile Strength shall be a minimum of 20kg/mm2 (200 Newtons) Elongation at break shall be minimum of 15%. 8.2 Tensile Strength and Elongation Tests Conductor Insulation: Minimum Tensile Strength shall be 1.9 kg/mm2 ( 19 Newtons ). Minimum Elongation at break shall be 125% 9. Thermal And Environmental Requirements. 9.1 Heat Aging Test of Conductor Insulation. 6 samples each 150 mm long shall be conditioned for 120 hours at 82 degrees C C in accordance with the method described in IEC Publication 540 Clause 6. Results of tests taken after the accelerated aging process shall conform to the following limits. i) Weight loss mean value for six samples shall be expressed as a percentage, of the original weight of each sample and the mean of these losses shall not exceed 2%. ii) The difference between the median values for tensile strength and elongation obtained with those measured before aging shall not exceed 20%, IEC 540- Clause Test for resistance of PVC Insulation to Cracking The test shall be carried out with two samples of the PVC insulated conductor. The samples shall be wound on a mandrel of 3 mm diameter in accordance with IEC Publication 540 Clause After heating of the specimens on a pre-heated air oven at 150 C + 3 C for 1 hour, the test pieces shall show no evidence of cracking when viewed with normal vision or corrected vision without magnification. 9.3 Inflammability Test The flame-proofing qualities shall be tested by holding, samples of finished single wire horizontally in the hottest part of a 76 mm luminous flame ( 10 mm burner) for a period of 5 seconds and removing for a similar period. The wire should withstand three periods in the flame without igniting the PVC covering beyond the portion affected by the burner i.e. after the third application of the flame, the burning effect shall not travel along the PVC covering but die out after the removal of the wire from the burner. MOC Requirement. : This test shall be carried out in accordance with IEC Publication 332-2, Part-2, Tests on Electric Cables under fire conditions. -Test on small single insulated wire. 10. Inspection Tests and Inspection shall be carried cut as specified in MOC Standards G30:l0:0l and G40:l0: Packing And Marking The jumper wire shall be packed in coils of 200 metres. The diameter of the eye of the coils shall be between 20 and 25 cms. Coils shall be adequately protected against abrasion by a PVC lapping. Alternatively the wire may be coiled on lightweight compressed paper, wood, or plastic drums and suitable protection bindings applied. Each coil shall be suitably labeled to indicate the following details. 1) Jumper Wire -Twin 2) Color of Conductors 5 of 6
