Part I. STUDIES OF WIND-WAVE CLIMATE

Global Atlas of Ocean Waves based on VOS observations based on the Voluntary Observing Ship (VOS) data from the ICOADS swh Jan separate estimates of sea, swell and significant wave height (SWH) over the Global Ocean (updated) monthly 2-degree resolution swh Jul all maps are accompanied by original and analyzed data V. Grigorieva and S. Gulev IO RAS 07 May 2010 Project GlobWave No. 5

VOS - Altimetry comparison For the validation of the climatology we used Ku-band altimeter data from GEOSAT, TOPEX / POSEIDON and ERS-1 / 2 VOS ALT Spatial and temporal resolution as VOS VOS - ALT , except for some months with missing data in The magnitude of differences ranges from -1 to 1 meter for almost all regions 07 May 2010 Project GlobWave No. 6

VOS - Altimetry comparison VOS ALT overestimation small waves in the tropics and subtropics VOS - ALT underestimation high waves in mid latitudes of both Hemispheres Sampling uncertainty is a minor contributor to this bias which is largely influenced by fundamental biases in algorithms of the altimeter retrievals 07 May 2010 Project GlobWave No. 7

Our needs for global climate studies High resolution satellite wave data are required for further validation of the visual wave observations, including estimation of extreme wave statistics, especially in the regions with poor sampling density, e.g. in the Southern Ocean. Satellite based regional products are to be compared with extensive VOS observations in well-sampled regions. Potentially satellite products along with model wave hindcasts and VOS data can be used for the development of blended (or synthetic) global products of ocean wind waves. 07 May 2010 No. 8

Part II. INLAND SEAS AND GREAT LAKES

The Caspian Sea The Caspian Sea presents the world s largest isolated water reservoir, with only an isolation being its significant dissimilarity from the open seas. The other features of the Caspian Sea including its size, depth, chemical properties, peculiarities of the thermohaline structure and water circulation enable to classify it as a deep inland sea. The isolation of the Caspian Sea from the ocean and its inland position are responsible for a great importance of the outer thermohydrodynamic factors, specifically, the heat and water fluxes through the sea surface, and river runoff for the sea level variability, formation of its 3D thermohaline structure and water circulation.
