1 DIRECTORS REPORT Hi Everyone, Here we are pushing the end of September and I cannot figure out where the Summer has gone. Better yet, we are 3 months out from Elections and the end of 2011!! So far this year, we have had some great events such as the April Fools Ride, Shrimp Boil, Chapter Picnic, a couple of Bowling Party s along with the Monthly Bowling, a wonderful Sun Rise Sun Set Weekend Ride. Between Lenny and Taco, nearly every weekend and some weekends both days, they have planned Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner Rides for us. At this writing Lenny has a nice Ride planned to Fantasy of Flight next Saturday. Taco and LOH as well as the other Officers have a GREAT Christmas Party planned. I believe everyone will be pleased with the Location, Food, Drinks and the Price!! OCTOBER 2011 October is as always, the Florida State Rally. Destin / Ft. Walton Beach is just Beautiful. I have never seen sand that white! One of the positive things about going back to Destin / Ft. Walton Beach area again this year is the opportunity to ride to some areas we could not make it to last year as well as go back to some we liked. As I understand it, Lake County HOG is behind another Chapter for Volunteers and Pre Registration for the first time in many years. Pre-Registration is over, but you can still come and Register on site. I know for a fact there will be another Room Craw at the Host Hotel. I know it will be better than last year s!! What a GREAT TIME!! I also know there are Rooms at the Host Hotel that become available from time to time, so keep checking for Cancelations if you want to stay at the Emerald Grand. Just last week we were able to do an upgrade to a corner Unit due to a Cancelation. Back to the Event, and Rides that are planned. We understand no one can make every event the Chapter has worked hard to arrange, but try to make a few every month or so. To give you an Idea how many Events and or Rides we do a year, I got a request from Valerie Ledterman (our HOG Area Rep) a few weeks ago asking how many Events and Rides we do. I starting counting and came up with over 110 things the Chapter has available for our members to do in a Year! That shows we have some dedicated Members doing some serious Planning for YOU!! Take advantage of it! 2 Activities Report Well it appears that the temps are slowing starting to come down and that means better riding. Not that most weather is bad for riding, just sometimes its better than others. So let's get out as a chapter and have some fun on some of the greatest roads Florida has to offer as well as the best friends that anyone can ask for in Lake Co HOG!!!! As I write this it is Sept 11, brings back many memories for me and I want to personally thank all first responders. Without people like you, the disaster of the day would have been much worse. Now let s move on and get out and RIDE. Here are the activities and rides for the next month Oct 1: Cleremont HOG breast cancer ride starting at the Red Wing restaraunt in Groveland. Sign up from 9-10:30 and ending at Stormy Hill. Let s get out and show our sister chapter and dealership our support. Ride leaving from the Shell station at the corner of Hwy 19 and Dead River Road in Tavares at 9 AM sharp. Oct 2: Lunch ride to Victoria's in Dunnellon leaving Gator at Noon sharp. Oct 8: Chapter meeting day. Oct 9: Orlando HOG Russel Home ride. More information at the meeting. Oct 15: Phone ride for the troops. Bring unwanted cell phones, working or not, to Gator to been traded in for phone cards for soldiers overseas to call home. Oct 18-22: State HOG Rally, pre-registration is closed, but you can still register on site, sure to be a great time to be had by all. Bike games, free poker runs and some of the most beautiful scenery ever. Oct 29: Halloween Bowling party at Classique Bowl in Tavares. 3 Road Captain Report I ll keep it short and sweet. Please bring your old phones or your neighbors phone by the next meeting. Chief Ed Nathanson would like a good count of phones for the presentation after the Oct 15 th ride. It will be a short ride but a ride for a very good cause. The weather is getting better now. Not so hot but we still have to be aware of the late afternoon storms. Check your tires for wear and have proper equipment available. Then, slow down. Drive careful, maybe look for cover for protection from the elements. Ride safe Lenny La Branche

4 Tires Keeping Them Safe by Rod Jones, Safety Officer There s a story about a person who went to a hardware store, looking for a stick of dynamite. The clerk told the person he didn t have any dynamite, and then, out of curiosity, asked why the person needed dynamite. The person responded it was for a Roadside Emergency Kit in case the car has a flat. In case the car has a flat? asked the clerk. Sure, the person said, so I can blow up the tire. Flat tires are bad news especially on a motorcycle and especially when the flat happens all at once from a blowout. The result is devastating and potentially lethal, as graphically illustrated a few years ago in our own Gator Service Shop. One of the mechanics brought out a tire from a badly damaged motorcycle. The tire was split open and looked like a small explosive device had gone off inside. In effect, that was exactly what had happened. But in this case, it wasn t dynamite, C4, or any other explosive chemical; it was heat and pressure, generated by a severely underinflated tire. Fortunately, no one died. But how did under inflation lead to a blowout? In a word: HEAT. When a tire is underinflated, several things happen. First of all, it s less rigid, which creates more rolling friction and increased heat. Additionally, the sides of the tire bend and flex too much. The flexing and bending generates even more heat. This heat can exceed the ability of the tire dissipate it, especially on hot days, and can cause serious damage to the tire, including tread separation and blowout. Under inflation is dangerous for another reason, as well. In the presence of water on the roadway, under inflation can result in hydroplaning. Hydroplaning occurs when water builds up under the tread and the water pressure exceeds the air pressure inside the tire, pushing the center of the tire off the road, and causing the tire to become concave. When that happens, the tire essentially starts to ride on the small stream of water underneath it. Steering at that point is lost, as the tire goes in the direction the stream of water and physics take it. So how do our tires become underinflated? Obviously, they could develop a slow leak from a puncture or a leaky valve stem. But perfectly good tires lose air too, in fact as much as one pound per square inch (psi) per month. Moreover, as temperatures drop, perfectly good tires can lose one additional psi for every 10-degree drop. The solution to under inflation is simple know the correct tire pressure for our tires, check them on a regular basis, and keep them properly inflated. Unfortunately, most of us do not check our tire pressure as often as we should. When was the last time you checked the pressures on your bike? If it s been several weeks, it s almost a certainty your tires are low mine were. The key to proper inflation is developing a weekly routine a little time well invested. We need to keep in mind that front and rear tire pressures may not be the same. On dressers, for example, when there is a rider and a passenger, the recommended pressure for the front tire is 36 psi, while the rear tire is 40 psi. So, where do we find the proper inflation numbers? If we re running stock tires, the recommended tire pressures are in our Owner s Manual. For other than stock tires, information should be obtained from the tire manufacturer. (Note: The pressure listed on the tire sidewall is a maximum that should never be exceeded, but it may not be the recommended pressure.) And remember, tires should be checked when they re cold, that is after they ve set a couple hours, or only been used for a short trip to the service station.
