Parktown oys High School epartment of Science SI/June Exam/2017 GENERL INSTRUTIONS. Please read these instructions carefully. 1. Non-programmable calculators may be used. 2. ppropriate mathematical instruments may be used. 3. The borrowing/lending of any material is FORIEN. QUESTION 1: MULTIPLE HOIE INSTRUTIONS ircle the correct answer on this sheet. 1.1 Which task would the laboratory equipment shown be most useful for? measuring 450 milliliters of water measuring 5 milliliters of vinegar weighing 200 grams of baking soda transferring powered chemicals from a bottle 1.2 Which activity involves only a physical change? grinding coffee beans baking cookies acid bubbling on rock exploding fireworks 1.3 s water is heated, the motion of the water molecules will generally: decrease. increase. remain the same. temperature does not influence the movement of the particles. 1.4 Which of the following defines matter? nything without mass nything with mass and takes up space nything with mass but doesn't take up space nything without mass and doesn't take up space 1.5 If a black ball is denser than a white ball of the same size, the black ball has: less volume. more volume. more matter taking up the same space. less matter taking up the same space. 2
Parktown oys High School epartment of Science SI/June Exam/ (n).... is a positively charged particle in an atom's nucleus. electron neutron plasma proton 1.7 What happens to the particles when a piece of rock is heated up? They get bigger They get smaller They stay the same size They move closer together [14] QUESTION 2 Read through the section on the sun and answer the questions that follow: The sun lies at the heart of the solar system, where it is by far the largest object. It holds 99.8 percent of the solar system's mass and is roughly 109 times the diameter of the Earth about one million Earths could fit inside the sun. The core extends from the sun's centre to about a quarter of the way to its surface. lthough it only makes up roughly 2 percent of the sun's volume, it is almost 15 times the density of lead and holds nearly half of the sun's mass Just like most other stars, the sun is made up mostly of hydrogen, followed by helium. Nearly all the remaining matter consists of seven other elements oxygen, carbon, neon, nitrogen, magnesium, iron and silicon. For every 1 million atoms of hydrogen in the sun, there are 98,000 of helium, 850 of oxygen, 360 of carbon, 120 of neon, 110 of nitrogen, 40 of magnesium, 35 of iron and 35 of silicon. Still, hydrogen is the lightest of all elements, so it only accounts for roughly 72 percent of the sun's mass, while helium makes up about 26 percent. 3
Parktown oys High School epartment of Science SI/June Exam/ What type of matter is mainly found in the sun? (1) 2.2 Write down the name and the symbols of 5 these particles mentioned in this section. (5) 2.3 Name three diatomic molecules mentioned in this section. (3) 2.4 raw a labeled diagram of a helium atom that contains two electrons and three neutrons. (3) 2.5 The density of lead is kg.m -3. etermine the density of the centre of the sun. (2) [14] 4

(1) 4.2 What happens to the water molecules in order to change from a solid to a liquid? (2) 4.3 What happens to the volume of the water when it is heated up? (1) 4.4 State three methods in which the pressure of a gas can be increased. (3) [7] 7
Parktown oys High School epartment of Science SI/June Exam/2017 QUESTION Use the Table of ensities in the ata Sheet and the following photo to answer the following questions: omplete the following sentences: has the highest density has the lowest density soda cap will in corn syrup Milk will in lamp oil cherry tomato and a ping pong ball are both dropped into water. The cherry tomato and the ping pong ball. (6) 8
Parktown oys High School epartment of Science SI/June Exam/ What is the density of an object that has a mass of 184 g and has a length of 10 cm, height of 10 mm and a width of 5 cm? Show all your formulas and calculations.
