We define ulti-particle eccentricities ɛ n which are associated with the n th angular ultipole oent for particles. We show that in the liit of fluctuation doinance all of the ɛ n s are approxiately equal for 4. For dynaics linearly responding to these eccentricities such as hydrodynaics or proposed in this paper weakly interacting field theory, these relations aong eccentricities are translated into relations aong flow oents v n. We explicitly deonstrate it with hydrodynaic calculations. 1. Introduction In nucleus-nucleus (A+A) and proton-nucleus (p+a) collisions, there is an approxiately boost invariant structure associated with an angular asyetry of the two and any particle correlation functions. In heavy ion collisions, this asyetry is conventionally associated with hydrodynaic flow driven by angular asyetries of the underlying atter distribution [1]. This angular asyetry contains a coponent that is due to fluctuations in the transverse positions of particle interactions [2, 3], and a coponent associated with source asyetry at finite ipact paraeter of the collision. In p+a collisions, a variety of echaniss leading to angular correlations have Eail addresses: abzdak@bnl.gov (Ada Bzdak), piotr.bozek@ifj.edu.pl (Piotr Bozek), clerran@bnl.gov (Larry McLerran) Preprint subitted to Nuclear Physics A Septeber 24, 2018
2 been proposed, soe involving hydrodynaic like scenarios as in A+A interactions [4] and soe involving non-trivial angular correlations associated with the eission process [5]. To quantify the oentu space distribution of particles, one ay identify an angular haronic of the oentu space distribution as v n = 1 d 2 p T e inφ dn N dyd 2 (1) p T where N = d 2 p T of the for dn dyd 2 p T. This is a coplex quantity and for each event is v n = η n e iγn (2) The angle γ n describes the orientation of the flow vector relative to soe chosen coordinate axis, and η n is its odulus. When averaging over events, it ust be true that v n = 0 by rotational invariance. Borghini, Dinh and Ollitrault introduced ulti-particle correlations that easure the rotationally invariant part of the flow [6]. For exaple, the two particle correlation is v 2 n2 = e in(φ 1 φ 2 ) = v 2 2 (3) In a collision at fixed ipact paraeter, it is conventionally believed that this expectation value contains a piece associated with the geoetry of the collision, which if the ipact paraeter is sufficiently well defined is non fluctuating, plus a fluctuating coponent. Originally these authors introduced higher order coponents associated with 4, 6 and ore particle correlations to reduce contributions fro two (four or ore) particle non-flow correlations. For exaple v 4 n4 = 2 v n 2 2 v n 4 (4) and v 6 n6 = 1 4 [ vn 6 9 v n 2 v n v n 2 3] (5) and higher order generalizations to larger nuber of particles. Interesting for the following discussion is the fact, that the cuulant expressions for the haronic flow coefficients allow one to isolate the fluctuating coponent fro that of the geoetry of the collision. If there is no ean field contribution to the distribution functions then, it is easy to see that for purely Gaussian fluctuations, v n 4 = v n 6 = 0, that is these ters are sensitive only to correlations of fourth order or higher fro the average flow [7]. For 2
3 a large nuber of independent sources, these correlations are expected to be sall. So it is believed that these higher order correlations capture the intrinsic flow contributions and reduce the effects of fluctuations. In heavy ion collisions it is in fact found that with very good precision v 2 4 = v 2 6 = v 2 8, with v 2 2 different due to its intrinsic fluctuations [8, 9]. The pattern seen so far in p+a collisions is rearkably siilar to that found in heavy ion collisions [10, 11]. Why is this result surprising? It is v2 2 2 v v v 2 4 2, because if one easures the agnitude of flow fluctuation by one finds that this is coparable in p+a and A+A collisions independent of ipact paraeter. This would suggest that a ean field value is not so well defined [12]. A related observation is that the easured value of v 3 4 in A+A collisions deviates fro zero [13, 14, 9]. The triangularly in A+A interaction region coes only fro fluctuations and one expects v in the leading order. However, for fluctuation doinated eccentricities, subleading effects give 4 0 [15], which can explain the experiental data. In this paper, we will consider in detail the generalization of v n by introducing coefficients ɛ n ( 2 is even). The advantage of this is that we can easily copute the distribution of eccentricities, and understand the various contributions arising fro a ean field or fro fluctuations. Of course these quantities are the input into a coputation of the v n, but for sall ɛ n we expect linearity in the response to the syste for the elliptic and triangular flow [16, 17] v n = c n ɛ n (6) Here c n is independent of. This result is well known for hydrodynaics but we also deonstrate it in the case where the source of eccentricity is radiation of a weakly coupled scalar field. We expect that this linear response is quite general. We can define the eccentricities as ɛ n = 1 r n T d 2 r T e inφ r n T dn dyd 2 r T (7) The quantities ɛ n are defined in precise analogy to the v n. Now we can state the ain result of this paper. Perforing nuerical calculations we observe that ɛ n 2 > ɛ n 4 ɛ n 6 ɛ n 8, n = 2, 3, for both A+A and p+a collisions. Experiental observation of analogous relation for the Fourier coefficients of the aziuthal correlation function in p+a, v n, would indicate the iportance of the initial geoetry in 3
4 such collisions as present, e.g., in hydrodynaics or weakly interacting field theory (see Section 3). It is worth entioning that equality of ulti-particle eccentricities ay be obtained by a two-paraeter shifted Gaussian weight function ɛ n = dzdze (z z n)(z z n)/σ 2 n (zz) /2 dzdze (z z n)(z z n)/σ 2 n (8) We use coplex notation, z = x+iy. The result we find for this distribution is that ɛ n 2 = z n 2 + σ 2 n (9) ɛ n = z n, (10) where 4. Certainly there are different distributions leading to an approxiate equality of ɛ n for 4. We will coe back to this point at the end of this paper. Soe of the discussion we present in this paper is not new, and has been derived in soe for in the literature referred to in this paper. Our goal here is to tie together various coon features of p+a and A+A collisions, and in particular the appearance of a ean ellipticity and triangularity even in the fluctuation doinated region of such collisions. We hope that the observations we present will help to focus the understanding of contrasting explanations of p+a and A+A collisions. 2. Multi-particle eccentricities We start our discussion with a siple odel with a given nuber of points sapled randoly on the two diensional plane. In this odel we take N points with the x and y coordinates sapled fro a unifor distribution in the interval [ 1, 1] and calculate ɛ n for all points satisfying x 2 + y 2 < 1. In each event we obtain (the coordinate syste is shifted to the center of ass) [ N ] 2 [ i=1 rn i cos(nφ N 2 i) + i=1 rn i i)] sin(nφ n = [ N i=1 rn i ] 2, (11) where ri 2 = x 2 i + y2 i, and finally we average over the sufficient nuber of events. In Fig. 1 we present our results for ɛ n, = 2, 4, 6, 8 and 4
5 n = 2, 3. 1 As discussed in the introduction it is interesting to notice that Rando odel N Rando odel N Figure 1: The -particle eccentricities ɛ n, = 2, 4, 6, 8 for n = 2 (left) and n = 3 (right) calculated in the rando odel for a various nuber of points, N, sapled randoly on the two diensional plane. ɛ n 2 > ɛ n 4 ɛ n 6 ɛ n 8, n = 2, 3 (12) Expanding the expectations in Eq. (11) to a leading order one finds a Bessel- Gaussian distribution with zero ean-field for the event-by-event distribution of ɛ n [18, 7], for which ɛ n = 0 for 4. Our results show that ɛ n for 4 are non zero, and for the values of N that we consider are roughly of the sae order of agnitude as the width of the splitting between the second oent and all of the others (Fig. 1). The oents for 4 are to a good approxiation equal. This eans that the deviations fro the Bessel-Gaussian liit are roughly of the sae order as the fluctuations giving a nonzero value of ɛ n 2 [19, 20, 15]. In the left panel of Fig. 2 we evaluate n R n, = 2 2 n (13) for n = 2, 4 and = 4, 6. This quantity allows for a detail coparison of the ean field and fluctuating coponents. In the right panel of Fig. 2 we 1 For copleteness we have (for ɛ n2, 4, 6 see Section 1): 33ɛ n8 8 = ɛ 8 n + 16 ɛ 6 n n + 18 ɛ 4 n ɛ 4 n n n 4 5

Already for N > 10 it approaches the liit 1 + 4/π, derived in Ref. [18]. It is obvious that the rando odel discussed above is driven only by fluctuations. It suggests that identical properties for ɛ n, in particular Eq. (12), should be also present in p+a collisions. Indeed, perforing suitable calculations in the standard Glauber odel, see e.g., [21] we obtain very siilar results, both qualitatively and quantitatively, to those presented in Fig. 1. We checked that this conclusion is independent on the specific realization of the Glauber odel. For exaple, in Fig. 3 we show the results based on the Glauber odel in p+pb collisions with additional fluctuations, given by the Gaa distribution, deposited at the positions of the wounded nucleons [22]. The additional fluctuations of the source lead to increase of eccentricities for higher cuulants, e.g., 4/ For very large values of N we would expect deviations fro this expectation [20, 15], with 4 decreasing as 1/N 3/4, while 2 behaves as 1/N 1/2. The obtained signal satisfies the sae relation as in Eq. (12). In Fig. 4 we present results for R n, (left panel) and σ ɛn / ɛ n (right panel). In both figures we plot as a function of the nuber of wounded nucleons [23] coing for the Glauber calculation. 6

At the end of this Section we present in Fig. 5 results for Pb+Pb collisions. Ellipticity in A+A collisions is not only driven by fluctuations but also a ean field coponent is present in an off central collisions. It is clear that if eccentricities are doinated by a ean field we expect ɛ n 2 ɛ n 4 ɛ n 6 ɛ n 8 but, as we argue, it is never the case in A+A collisions. As shown in Fig. 6, the quantity R 2,4 and the scaled width of the fluctuations 7
8 are actually coparable to p+a collisions, which are solely driven by fluctuations. Taking into account our discussion of p+a collisions it is now obvious that in A+A collisions the relation ɛ n 2 > ɛ n 4 ɛ n 6 ɛ n 8 holds as well for all ipact paraeters A+A, Glauber A+A, Glauber Figure 5: The -particle eccentricities ɛ n, = 2, 4, 6, 8 for n = 2 (left) and n = 3 (right) versus the nuber of wounded nucleons,, calculated in the standard Glauber odel for Pb+Pb collisions. We cut 6, 8 for > 110 owing to insufficient statistics. 3. Discussion The elliptic and triangular asyetry in the collective flow arises fro the corresponding elliptic and triangular deforations of the initial source. Event-by-event siulations show that the eccentricity distributions in A+A collisions are reproduced in the haronic flow distribution for v 2 and v 3 [24, 16, 17]. The sae correspondence has been noticed for p+pb collisions [22], see also [25]. Advanced hydrodynaic calculations using IP-Glasa initial conditions reproduce quantitatively the event-by-event v n distributions [24]. 2 Calculations using Glauber or MC-KLN odels cannot reproduce the experiental distributions of v 2 for all the centralities. This is due ainly to differences of the predicted ean-field eccentricities which lead to ɛ n distribution shapes that cannot be rescaled to fit the experiental distributions of v 2 [12]. The situation is different for v 2 in ultracentral A+A and for v 3, the easured distributions are close to the Bessel-Gaussian, and are copatible with rescaled ɛ n distributions obtained in the Glauber and MC-KLN 2 Although the results were shown only for 0 5% and 20 25% centrality classes. 8

Moreover, the nuerical exaples presented above, show that the approxiate equality of higher cuulant eccentricities is independent of details of how the fluctuations are generated in the initial density, whenever the fluctuations doinate. In p+a collisions the eccentricities are fluctuation doinated and the Glauber odel is expected to give a qualitatively correct picture of eccentricity distributions. Our results show that the elliptic and triangular eccentricities flow coefficients for higher order cuulants are all of the sae order for p+a collisions. The eccentricities ɛ n 4 ɛ n 6 ɛ n 8 are 60 70% of ɛ n 2, depending on the details of the Glauber odel. Fro the approxiately linear response of hydrodynaic flow to the initial asyetries, we expect a siilar relation for v 2 and v 3. With an additional increase of v n 2 fro non-flow two-particle correlations. Fro event-by-event hydrodynaic siulations for centrality 0-10% using Glauber+NB (NB stands for negative binoial) initial conditions [22] one obtains the distribution of the elliptic flow coefficients v 2, without nonflow or finite ultiplicity fluctuations. The cuulants of the elliptic flow coefficient distribution give v 2 2 = 82 ± 02, v 2 4 = 55 ± 04, v 2 6 = 52 ± 05. (15) The relation between different v 2 is in fair agreeent with the values of 9
10 the initial. One can also find a relationship of the type of Eq. (6), that expresses the independence of the flow induced by eccentricity to the nuber of particles involved aking the correlation. This follows fro free field theory and arises fro the interference pattern of waves eitted by sources corresponding to the eccentricity. For exaple, suppose we have a source with a dipole oent that eits at the tie of the collision. Then (k 2 + M 2 )φ(k) = ρ(k) (16) If the source has a dipole oent in space it is transfored into a dipole oent in oentu space after Fourier transforation. If one coputes the distribution of the source squared, ρ(k) 2 one therefore has a quadruple oent corresponding to. That is the quadruple asyetry of the source distribution ρ(r) 2 is transfored into a quadruple asyetry in oentu space by wave interference. Since v 2 φ 2, we gain the equality of the flow oents. Of course, we need to introduce soe fluctuation into the correlation with v 2 2 in order to reproduce the pattern we see, which presuably arise fro quantu fluctuations around the classical wave solution. We will critically discuss this possibility in later work. 4. Conclusions The elliptic and triangular eccentricity distributions fro fluctuations of finite nuber, N, of sources show deviations for the Bessel-Gaussian distribution. The eccentricities calculated fro the 2, 4, 6, or 8- particle cuulants are nonzero. The second order eccentricity ɛ n 2 is always the largest. Expressions with higher order cuulants give siilar values ɛ n 4 ɛ n 6 ɛ n 8, both in p+a and A+A collisions. Typically for the p+a syste ɛ n ( 0.7)ɛ n 2 for 4. The haronic flow coefficients v n undergo siilar relations, when hydrodynaic expansion translates the initial shape asyetry into the aziuthal asyetry of eitted particles. For collisions where fluctuations doinate the higher order cuulant, v n are not zero for Glauber odel initial conditions. The nonzero value of v n 6 or v n 8 can arise solely fro fluctuations due to a finite nuber of sources, and with explicit syetry breaking in A+A collisions at finite ipact paraeter. We also proposed a novel echanis which linearly translates ɛ n into v n without dynaical interaction between produced particles. In view of the above discussion, it would be interesting to study and copare the higher order cuulant correlations in p+a collisions and also 10
11 to copare higher order cuulant results for v 2 and v 3 in ultracentral A+A collisions. After this paper was subitted to arxiv two papers appeared discussing siilar proble. In Ref. [26] it was noticed that the distribution of in p+a is well described by a power law function, which naturally leads to an approxiate equality of ulti-particle eccentricities for 4. In Ref. [27] the relation between various cuulants s, in particular an approxiate equality of higher ulti-particle eccentricities is calculated analytically.
