Chapter activities: Aivars Vembris talk to students of Institute of Solid State Physics of University of Latvia, Institute of Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy of University of Latvia and Laser centre of University of Latvia about SPIE and University of Latvia SPIE student chapter. As a result 18 new members from this institute join University of Latvia SPIE student chapter. UL SPIE Student Chapter and UL OSA Student Chapter organized International Student Conference DOC-2009 (Developments in Optics and Communications 2009): More than 60 participants from five countries. During the DOC conference was organized SPIE student chapter leadership workshop. Leaders from Saint-Petersburg State Univ. of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics and Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine student chapters gave a talks about there chapters. New member Jelena Aleksejeva, Mikhail Chubarov, Ilze Diebele, Vladislavs Duboviks, Segejs Fomins, Andrejs Gerbreders, Ugis Gertners, Gatis Ikaunieks, Darja Jakimovica, Varis Karitans, Valdis Korsaks, Edgars Kviesis-Kipge, Janis Latvels, Guntis Marcins, Juris Ulmanis, Aiga Svede, Mihails Vdovicenko, Through personal subscription members of UL student chapter can get papers from SPIE Digital Library. Members of student chapter organized a lecture for school students about physics in Latvia and there work. At the end participants visited laboratories of Institute of Solid State Physics. Vice president of student chapter, Edgars Nitiss, visited San Diego and participated in Leadership Workshop and Optics + Photonics conference. About this trip he gave a talk in the Institute of Solid State Physics. Several members helped to organize two international scientific conferences: Functional Materials and Nanotechnologies 2009 We invited Jean-luc Doumont. He was two days and gave two presentations. Effective Technical Presentations and Effective Scientific Papers. We are set up demonstration room for school students. Was made new web page of University of Latvia SPIE Student Chapter:
3 Photos of above mentioned activities you can find at the end of the report. Our grants and award: Edgars Nitiss received University of Latvia Solid State Physics scholarship. Seven members received European Union scholarship. Scientific activities of chapter member: Research of optical gradient and thermo-optical properties of NaNbO 3 thin films, optical properties of Ba 0.8 Sr 0.2 TiO 3 films, thermal expansion studies of PLZT x/85/15 solid solutions, as well as optical investigations of BST/PZT superlattices. Research of "up-conversion" processes (multi photon excitation, IR light conversion to VIS) in different materials: crystals, glasses and glass ceramics doped with rare-earth ions Synthesis of the materials (glass melting, crystal growth, chemical synthesis), material characterization (X-Ray Diffraction, Differential Thermal Analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy) and optical properties (stationary and time-resolved luminescence, absorbance). Determination of organic material electro-optical coefficients by Mahs Zender interferometer method. Development of new algorithm and software for diagnostic of human health by register of blood pulsation from optical signal. Low-temperature, high fervency plasma investigations by spectroscopic methods. Study of electroluminescent in organic materials.
