6 1 DECEMBER 1, 2010 *** PREFACE *** This summary contains the official registration and enrolment statistics of the University of Alberta as prepared by the Office of the Registrar and Student Awards. Values are presented as of December 1, 2010 in accordance with Statistics Canada reporting guidelines. Individuals who require information related to statistics at other points in time should contact the Information Systems Division, Office of the Registrar and Student Awards, for assistance. DEFINITIONS: Applications for Admission Applications for Re-admission Auditing Students Freshmen Full-time Students Graduate Students Home Off-campus Credit Students Open Studies Students Part-time Students Probationary Students Provisional Candidate for Doctoral Degree Applications made by students who have never before attended the University of Alberta. Applications made by University of Alberta students returning after an absence, or wishing to transfer from one program to another. Students registered for informational instruction only. Auditing students are not registered in courses for credit and therefore do not appear in any reports that specify full or part time registration. New students for whom the last educational institution attended was a high school or equivalent. Students registered for credit in the equivalent of 9 units (normally 3 courses) or more in a Fall/Winter term. Students admitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. These students are designated as "full-time" or "part-time" by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research according to their workload of courses and/or research. For the purpose of the statistics reported in part 7, home is derived from the student s current address at the point of initial application for admission. Students enrolled in courses offered in off-campus centres. Data other than centre of attendance for these students are included in full-time or part-time tables, depending on the students' course-loads. Some students may also be taking on-campus courses in addition to off-campus courses. Students registered in selected credit courses and/or courses for audit but who are not registered in a specific degree or diploma program. Students who are registered for credit in the equivalent of fewer than 9 units in a Fall/Winter term. Students admitted (or permitted to continue) on a probationary basis, because their previous academic record is either deficient in some respect, below the standard ordinarily required, or difficult to assess. Normally, if such students fail to meet the conditions stipulated within the time limit imposed, they will not be allowed to proceed further in the program. Probationary students may or may not be assigned a year of program. All Ph.D., D.Mus. and Ed.D. students are first admitted as provisional candidates and reclassified as candidates only when they have met requirements.

7 DECEMBER 1, *** PREFACE *** DEFINITIONS: Qualifying Graduate Students Special Students Terms Spring Term Summer Term Fall Term Winter Term Undergraduate Students Visiting/Exchange Students Year of Program Work Experience Students whose previous academic records do not allow them full admission into the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. Upon satisfactory completion of a qualifying year in a department these students may be reclassified as probationary students, candidates for a master's degree, or as provisional candidates for a doctoral degree. Students who have been permitted to register in one or more courses which are not being taken for credit toward a degree program. The academic year is divided into four terms for the purposes of registration and the scheduling of classes and examinations: The academic term extending from early May to mid-june (six weeks). The academic term extending from early July to mid-august (six weeks). The academic term extending from September 1 to December 31 (approx.) Note: this includes students registered in the associated PGME (Postgraduate Medical Education) term. The academic term extending from January 1 to April 30 (approx.) Students registered in a faculty (see faculty list in next section) other than the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. Bona fide students of other universities or colleges, who have been permitted to take one or more courses for transfer of credit to their own institutions, which have agreed in advance to such an arrangement. Years within each academic program are defined by ranges of cumulative units of course weights. The cumulative total of courses successfully completed by a student as of the commencement of the term is compared to these ranges to determine the student s year in program. This includes courses from other institutions for which the student has been awarded transfer credit. For example, in a Bachelor of Arts program, year one is defined as 1 to 29 units of course weight; year two as 30 to 59 units; year three as 60 to 83 units; year four as 84 or more units. A student who has been awarded 12 units of course weight in transfer credit and who has successfully completed 32 units of course weight at the University of Alberta (for a total of 44 units) would be assigned to year two. Includes co-operative programs, industrial internship programs, practicums, and clinical placements.
