1 Kent State University Catalog CHEMISTRY - B.S. College of Arts and Sciences Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry 08 Williams Hall Kent Campus chem@kent.edu Description The Bachel of Science degree in Chemistry is designed to provide a though foundation in the various fields of chemistry and the related sciences. The program is f students planning careers in the chemical industries governmental labaties, who intend to do graduate wk in chemistry. Students in the program have the opptunity to participate in an exchange program with the University of Leicester in England. The Chemistry maj comprises the following concentrations: The Biochemistry concentration provides strong preparation f students interested in pursuing graduate studies in biochemistry planning a career as a practicing biochemist in industrial research and development, government research labaties in academia. It also provides ideal preparation f students intending to pursue a Doct of Pharmacy degree, having been designed to closely fit the requirements f admission to the Ntheastern Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). With careful planning students may transfer to NEOMED after three years at Kent State, using 6 credit hours of courses from NEOMED to complete their Kent State degree requirements. With the selection of appropriate elective courses, this concentration meets the minimum requirements f certification by the American Chemical Society. The Biochemistry Pre-Medicine/Pre-Osteopathy/Pre-Dentistry concentration is the recommended track f students intending to go on to medical dental school. The Chemistry concentration is designed f students interested in careers as practicing chemists in industrial research and development, in government research labaties in academia. It includes a strong foundation in both chemistry and related disciplines (physics and mathematics) and provides opptunities to pursue advanced chemistry electives. This concentration meets the requirements f certification by the American Chemical Society and is ideal f students who plan to pursue graduate studies in chemistry. The Industrial Chemistry concentration provides solid background training in the maj areas of chemistry, as well as practical training and related experiences in fields sought by local and regional chemical industries. The Materials Chemistry concentration is recommended f students interested in pursuing graduate study industrial careers in materials science, including nanotechnology. Its requirements, similar to those of the traditional chemistry concentration, provide an opptunity f me in-depth study in the synthesis and characterization of inganic and ganic materials, including polymers. FULLY OFFERED AT: Kent Campus Accreditation American Chemical Society Admission Requirements The university affirmatively strives to provide educational opptunities and access to students with varied backgrounds, those with special talents and adult students who graduated from high school three me years ago. Freshman Students on the Kent Campus: The freshman admission policy on the Kent Campus is selective. Admission decisions are based upon the following: cumulative grade point average, ACT and/ SAT sces, strength of high school college preparaty curriculum and grade trends. The Admissions Office at the Kent Campus may defer the admission of students who do not meet admissions criteria but who demonstrate areas of promise f successful college study. Deferred applicants may begin their college coursewk at one of seven Regional Campuses of Kent State University. F me infmation on admissions, including additional requirements f some academic programs, visit the admissions website f new freshmen. Freshman Students on the Regional Campuses: Kent State campuses at Ashtabula, East Liverpool, Geauga, Salem, Stark, Trumbull and Tuscarawas, as well as the Regional Academic Center in Twinsburg, have open enrollment admission f students who hold a high school diploma, GED equivalent. Transfer, Transitioning and Fmer Students: F me infmation about admission criteria f transfer, transitioning and fmer students, please visit the admissions website. English Language Proficiency Requirements f International Students: All international students must provide proof of English language proficiency (unless they meet specific exceptions) by earning a minimum TOEFL sce (7 on the Internet-based version), minimum 7 MELAB sce, minimum 6.0 IELTS sce minimum 8 PTE Academic sce, by completing the ELS level Intensive Program. F me infmation on international admission, visit the Office of Global Education s admission website. Program Learning Outcomes Graduates of this program will be able to:. Demonstrate an understanding of and an ability to apply the chemical knowledge taught in the courses that comprise the degree.. Develop their abilities to plan and execute chemical experiments through individual investigation seni hons research/thesis courses. University Requirements All students in a bachel's degree program at Kent State University must complete the following university requirements f graduation. NOTE: University requirements may be fulfilled in this program by specific course requirements. Please see Program Requirements f details. Chemistry - B.S.
