1 Chemistry Undergraduate Maj (BA, BS, HBA, HBS) 1 UNDERGRADUATE MAJOR (BA, BS, HBA, HBS) BS Degree in Chemistry The BS degree in Chemistry features two tracks, each with a chemistry ce a selection of accompanying options. Students in either track any option with good academic recds letters of recommendation will be well prepared competitive f continued graduate education in chemistry related areas. Track One is well suited f students intending to pursue a graduate degree in chemistry a closely related area. t provides the most rigous complete chemistry background the most extensive labaty experience. The curriculum is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS) has two options: advanced biochemistry advanced chemistry. Both options include 1 credits of career-supptive electives (CSE) in advanced chemistry related disciplines. These CSE courses are approved by the advis are intended to strengthen the student's background in areas related to career goals. Students choosing the advanced chemistry option must take at least 3 credits in advanced labaty courses research. Track-One graduates are eligible f ACS certification by the department chair can become full members of the ACS without the requirement of wk experience. Track Two is suited f chemistry majs who want to gain extensive experience in a secondary area, target a particular career direction continue with graduate education in chemistry related areas. Track Two options include biochemistry, business, chemistry education, chemical engineering, environmental chemistry, fensic science, materials science, pre-medicine. The multidisciplinary approach of Track Two enhances preparation opptunities f employment in electronics, polymers, biotechnology (the biochemistry, chemical engineering, materials science options), f careers in environmental science (environmental chemistry option), wk in crime labs (fensic science option), teaching in high schools (chemistry education option). The Track Two curriculum is not approved by the American Chemical Society. t consists of a ce of chemistry courses (7 81 credits) a combination of 8 to 11 courses (30 37 credits) that defines each option. BA Degree in Chemistry The BA degree in Chemistry is appropriate f chemistry students interested in obtaining a broader academic background through a second-language requirement additional liberal arts courses ( credits). t also includes 1 credits of approved career-supptive electives to allow students to choose courses in advanced chemistry related disciplines to suppt their career goals. At least 3 credits are to be in advanced labaty courses research. This degree may lead to international opptunities, especially if coupled with the nternational Degree Program at OSU. All Undergraduate Chemistry Degrees Completion of an option is required to earn a degree in Chemistry. The baccalaureate ce requirements are met by: Fitness HHS 31 *LFETME FTNESS HEALTH HHS 1 *LFETME FTNESS ( any PAC course) 1- Writing courses Perspectives courses 1 One Biology course One Difference, Power, Discrimination course (DPD) 3 Synthesis courses Total Hours The quarters in which these are taken are flexible, except that synthesis courses must be taken at the juni seni level. Chemistry majs mins may not use S/U grading in courses that meet Department of Chemistry College of Science requirements. The timing of courses f all degrees options can be critical, especially because of prerequisites. Me detailed infmation suggestions about when to take courses are found on the Chemistry Department website at Students should meet with their advis every term. F many options in Track Two, students will also be directed to an additional advis in another department f courses in that option. F any option involving biochemistry courses, it is strongly recommended that students select: BB 31 CELL MOLECULAR BOLOGY, is also recommended. Prereqs f BB 31 CELL MOLECULAR BOLOGY are: B 11 *PRNCPLES OF BOLOGY B 1 *PRNCPLES OF BOLOGY B 13 *PRNCPLES OF BOLOGY CH 331 CH 33 3 B 1 *PRNCPLES OF BOLOGY as the biology course to fulfill the baccalaureate ce requirement. F options in which CH EXPERMENTAL is the recommended WC course, it is strongly recommended that CH ANALYTCAL be taken as a cequisite. Chemistry offers the following courses through the Hons College (HC). Chemistry students in the HC may substitute these courses f courses in the regular sequences: H & H & H CH 1H & CH H & CH 3H CH 31H & CH 3H & CH 1H 31H 3H 33H EXPERMENTAL EXPERMENTAL EXPERMENTAL 1 3
