4 PLACES TO SEE MITHILA ART GANGA AARTI JANAKI TEMPLE/NAULAKHA TEMPLE In 1657, a golden statue of the Goddess Sita was found and Goddess Sita is also said to have lived at the place where the temple currently stands. Goddess Sita was born to the King Janak of the Mithila Kingdom, and was later married to the Lord Rama of Ayodhya, according to the Ramayana. The reference of the town in the holy scripture brings thousands of visitors every year from Nepal, India and other countries to this ancient temple. The temple is adorned with intricately carved windows and boasts architecture marvel of both mughal and rajput era. Mithila is a traditional culture of Hindus. Mithila painting is an ancient painting method in which color is extracted from wheat, flowers, grass, turmeric and other natural products. Mithila art is an output of the hard labor done by a group of traditional Maithili women. As started from the era of Ramayana(Satya Yug) these women still continue the work of mithila painting; showing their art on the walls with pictures depicting the different aspects of traditional mithla lifestyle. 5 FESTIVALS OF JANAKPUR HOLI Holi is the most energetic festival, filled with fun and good humour; even the strict rules of separation between castes are abandoned.holi is also called 'The Festival of Colours', and people celebrate the festival by smearing each other with paint, and throwing coloured powder and dye around in an atmosphere of great good humour. CHHATH POOJA The Chhath Puja is dedicated to the Sun and his wife Usha in order to thank them for bestowing the bounties of life on earth and to request the granting of certain wishes. This festival is observed by Nepalese people and Indian people, along with their diaspora. The Sun, considered as the god of energy and of the life-force, is worshiped during the Chhath festival to promote well-being, prosperity and progress. In Hinduism, Sun worship is believed to help cure a variety of diseases, including leprosy, and helps ensure the longevity and prosperity of family members, friends, and elders. The rituals of the festival are rigorous and are observed over a period of four days. They include holy bathing, fasting and abstaining from drinking water (Barta), standing in water for long periods of time, and offering prashad (prayer offerings) and arghya to the setting and rising sun. Some devotees also perform a prostration march as they head for the river banks. Environmentalists claim that Chhath is the most ecofriendly Hindu festival VIVAH PANCMI The celebrations involve the enactment of the divine wedding ceremony. During the day a grand procession leaves from one temple to another and ends with the magnificent wedding ceremony in the evening. The idols of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita are magnificently adorned with clothes and jewelry to make them look like bridegroom and bride respectively. The entire event is popularly known as Ram Vivah Utsav. All through the day devotional songs in praise of Lord Rama are sung by devotees. Besides the festivities at the temples, several stage shows and cultural programmes are also organized on this occasion. Ramleela, a stage performance that depicts the life of Lord Rama and Devi Sita is also observed in many regions. People from different parts of the country come here to participate in the celebrations At Janakpur particularly the celebrations are observed with great fanfare. Special rituals and pujas are held across temples including the renowned Dashrath, Ram and Janaki temples. Here the celebrations continue for a period of 7 days and devotees observe all the rituals with immense zeal and dedication.
