arxiv: v1 [math.g] 16 ec 017 ESTIATES FOR OENTS OF GENERAL EASURES ON CONVEX BOIES SERGEY BOBOV, BO AZ LARTAG, AN ALEXANER OLOBSY Abstract. For p 1, N, ad a origi-symmetric covex body i R, let { ( } 1/ d ovr(,l p = if :, L p be the outer volume ratio distace from to the class L p of the uit balls of -dimesioal subspaces of L p. We prove that there exists a absolute costat c > 0 such that c (0.1 supd ovr(,l ploglog p. This result follows from a ew slicig iequality for arbitrary measures, i the spirit of the slicig problem of Bourgai. Namely, there exists a absolute costat C > 0 so that for ay p 1, ay N, ay compact set R of positive volume, ad ay Borel measurable fuctio f 0 o, (0. f(xdx C p d ovr(,l p 1/ sup f(x dx, H H where the supremum is take over all affie hyperplaes H i R. Combiig (0. with a recet couterexample for the slicig problem with arbitrary measures from [9], we get the lower estimate from (0.1. I tur, iequality (0. follows from a estimate for the p-th absolute momets of the fuctio f mi (x,ξ p f(x dx (Cp p/ d p ovr(,l p p/ f(x dx. ξ S Fially, we prove a result of the Busema-Petty type for these momets. 1. 2 SERGEY BOBOV, BO AZ LARTAG, AN ALEXANER OLOBSY for all cetrally-symmetric covex bodies R ad all eve cotiuous fuctios f 0 o. Here ad below, we deote by S = {ξ R : ξ = 1} the Euclidea uit sphere cetered at the origi, ad stads for volume of appropriate dimesio. (Note that the cotiuity property of f i the defiitio 1.1 is irrelevat ad may easily be replaced by measurability. As we will see, there is a two-sided boud o γ(p,. Theorem 1.1. With some positive absolute costats c ad C, for ay p 1, c loglog γ(p, C p. To describe the way the upper boud is obtaied, deote by L p the class of the uit balls of -dimesioal subspaces of L p. Equivaletly (see [11, p. 117], L p is the class of all cetrally-symmetric covex bodies i R such that there exists a fiite Borel measure ν o S satisfyig (1.3 x p = S (x,θ p dν (θ, x R. Here x = if{a 0 : x a} is the orm geerated by. Note that L 1 = Π is the class of polar projectio bodies which, i particular, cotais the cross-polytopes; see [11, Ch.8] for details. For a (bouded set i R, defie the quatity V(,L p = if{ 1/ :, L p}. If is measurable ad has positive volume, we have the relatio with (1.4 d ovr (,L p = if { ( V(,L p = d ovr (,L p 1/, 1/ :, L p }. Forcovex, the latter maybe iterpreted as the outer volume ratiodistace from to the class of uit balls of -dimesioal subspaces of L p. The ext body-wise estimates refie the upper boud i Theorem 1.1 i terms of the d ovr -distace. Theorem 1.. Give a probability measure µ o R with a compact support, for every p 1, ( 1/p mi (x,ξ p dµ(x C p V(,L ξ S p, where C is a absolute costat. I particular, if f is a o-egative cotiuous fuctio o a compact set R of positive volume, the mi,f,p (ξ (Cp p/ d p ξ S ovr (,L p p/ f(xdx. I the class of cetrally-symmetric covex bodies i R, there is a dimesioal boud d ovr (,L p, which follows from Joh s theorem ad the fact that ellipsoids belog to L p for all p 1 (see [6] ad [11, Lemma 3.1]. Hece, the secod upper boud of Theorem 1. is more accurate i compariso with the uiversal boud of Theorem 1.1. oreover, for several classes of cetrally-symmetric covex bodies, it is kow that the distace d ovr (,L p is bouded by absolute costats. These classes
ESTIATES FOR OENTS OF GENERAL EASURES ON CONVEX BOIES 3 iclude duals of bodies with bouded volume ratio (see [14] ad the uit balls of ormed spaces that embed i L q, 1 q < (see [18, 15]. I the case p = 1, they also iclude all ucoditioal covex bodies [14]. The proofs i these papers estimate the distace from the class of itersectio bodies, but the actual bodies used there (the Euclidea ball for p > 1 ad the cross-polytope for p = 1 also belog to the classes L p, so the same argumets work for L p. I order to prove the lower estimate of Theorem 1.1, we first establish the coectio betwee questio (1.1 ad the slicig problem for arbitrary measures. The slicig problem of Bourgai [, 3] asks whether sup L <, where L is the miimal positive umber L such that, for ay cetrally-symmetric covex body R, L max ξ S ξ 1/. Here,ξ isthehyperplaeir passigthroughtheorigiadperpediculartothe vectorξ, adwewrite ξ forthe(-dimesioalvolume. Bourgai sslicig problem is still usolved. The best-to-date estimate L C 1/4 was established by the secod-amed author [8], removig a logarithmic term from a earlier estimate by Bourgai [4]. The slicig problem for arbitrary measures was itroduced i [1] ad cosidered i [13, 14, 15, 5, 9]. I aalogy with the origial problem, for a cetrally-symmetric covex body R, let S, be the smallest positive umber S satisfyig (1.5 f(xdx S max ξ S ξ f(xdx 1 for all eve cotiuous fuctios f 0 i R (where dx o the right-had side refers to the Lebesgue measure o the correspodig affie subspace of R. It was proved i [13] that S = sup R S,. However, for may classes of bodies, icludig itersectio bodies [1] ad ucoditioal covexbodies [14], the quatity S, turs out to be bouded by a absolute costat. I particular, if is the uit ball of a -dimesioal subspace of L p, p >, the S, C p with some absolute costat C; see [15]. These results are implied by the followig estimate proved i [14]: Theorem 1.3. ([14] For ay cetrally-symmetric star body R ad ay eve cotiuous o-egative fuctio f o, f(xdx d ovr (,I max f(xdx 1/, ξ S ξ where d ovr (,I is the outer volume ratio distace from to the class I of itersectio bodies i R. The class of itersectio bodies I was itroduced by Lutwak [17]; it ca be defied as the closure i the radial metric of radial sums of ellipsoids cetered at the origi i R. O the other had, it was show i [9] that i geeral the costats S are of the order, up to a doubly-logarithmic term.
4 SERGEY BOBOV, BO AZ LARTAG, AN ALEXANER OLOBSY Theorem 1.4. ([9] For ay 3, there exists a cetrally-symmetric covex body T R ad a eve, cotiuous probability desity f : T [0, such that, for ay affie hyperplae H R, loglog (1.6 f(xdx C T /, T H where C > 0 is a uiversal costat. The coectio betwee (1. ad the slicig iequality for arbitrary measures (1.5 is as follows. Lemma 1.5. Give a Borel measurable fuctio f 0 o R, for ay ξ S ad p > 0, ( p ( p+1 p (p+1 f(xdx (x,ξ p f(xdx f(xdx. sup s R (x,ξ=s If f is defied o a set i R, we the have ( p ( p (p+1 f(xdx,f,p (ξ sup s R {(x,ξ=s} f(xdx p+1. The lower boud i Theorem 1.1 thus follows, by combiig the above iequality with (1. ad Theorem 1.4. Corollary 1.6. With some positive absolute costats c ad C, for every p 1, c loglog S Cγ(p,. Lemma 1.5, i cojuctio with Theorem 1., leads to a ew slicig iequality. I the case of volume, where f 1, this iequality was established earlier by Ball [1] for p = 1 ad by ilma [18] for arbitrary p. Theorem 1.7. Let f 0 be a Borel measurable fuctio o a compact set R of positive volume. The, for ay p >, f(xdx C p d ovr (,L p 1/ sup f(xdx, H H where the supremum is take over all affie hyperplaes H i R, ad C is a absolute costat. Theorem 1.7 also holds for 1 p, but i this case it is weaker tha Theorem 1.3, because the uit ball of every fiite dimesioal subspace of L p, 0 < p, is a itersectio body; see [10]. However, for p > the uit balls of subspaces of L p are ot ecessarily itersectio bodies. For example the uit balls of l p are ot itersectio bodies if p >, 5; see [11, Th. 4.13]. So the result of Theorem 1.7 is ew for p >, ad geeralizes the estimate from [15] i the case where itself belogs to the class L p. Theorem 1.7 gives aother reaso to estimate the outer volume ratio distace d ovr (,L p from a arbitrary symmetric covex body to the class of uit balls of subspaces of L p. As metioed before, d ovr (,L p,
ESTIATES FOR OENTS OF GENERAL EASURES ON CONVEX BOIES 5 uiformly over all cetrally-symmetric covex bodies i R. Surprisigly, the correspodig lower estimates seem to be missig i the literature. Combiig Theorems 1.7 ad 1.4, we get a lower estimate which shows that is optimal up to a doubly-logarithmic term with respect to the dimesio ad a term depedig o the power p oly. Corollary 1.8. There exists a cetrally-symmetric covex body T R such that d ovr (T,L p c ploglog for every p 1, where c > 0 is a uiversal costat. We ed the Itroductio with a compariso result for the quatities,f,p (ξ. For p 1, itroduce the Baach-azur distace d B (,L p = if{ a 1 : L p such that a} from a star body i R to the class L p. Recall that L p is ivariat with respect to liear trasformatios. By Joh s theorem, if is origi-symmetric ad covex, the d B (,L p. We prove the followig: Theorem 1.9. Let ad be origi-symmetric star bodies i R, ad let f 0 be a eve cotiuousfuctio o R. Give p 1, suppose that for every ξ S (1.7 (x,ξ p f(xdx (x,ξ p f(xdx. The f(xdx d p B (,L p f(xdx. This result is i the spirit of the isomorphic Busema-Petty problem for arbitrary measures proved i [16]: with the same otatios, if f(xdx f(xdx, ξ S, ξ ξ the f(xdx d B (,I f(xdx. We refer the reader to [11, Ch.5] for more about the Busema-Petty problem. Throughout this paper, we write a b whe ca b Ca for some absolute costats c,c. A covex body i R is a compact, covex set with a o-empty iterior. The stadard scalar product betwee x,y R is deoted by (x,y ad the Euclidea orm of x R by x. We write log for the atural logarithm.. Proofs I this sectio we prove Theorem 1., Lemma 1.5 ad Theorem 1.9. The other results of this paper will follow as explaied i the Itroductio. Give a compact set R ad x R, put x = mi{a 0 : x a}, if x a for some a 0, ad x = i the other case. For star bodies, it represets the usual ikowski fuctioal associated with.
6 SERGEY BOBOV, BO AZ LARTAG, AN ALEXANER OLOBSY Proof of Theorem 1.. Let R bethe uit ballofa-dimesioalsubspace of L p, so that the relatio (1.3 holds for some measure ν o the uit sphere S. The, itegratig the iequality mi θ S (x,θ p dµ(x (x,ξ p dµ(x (ξ S over the variable ξ with respect to ν, we get the relatio ν (S mi (x,θ p dµ(x x p θ S dµ(x. I the case, we have x x 1 o, so that the last itegral does ot exceed µ( = 1, ad thus (.1 ν (S mi θ S (x,θ p dµ(x 1. I orderto estimate the left-had side of(.1 from below, we represetthe value ν (S as the itegral S x p dν (x ad apply the well-kow formula x p Γ( p+ = (x,θ p dθ, x R π Γ( p+1 S (see for example [11, Lemma 3.1]. Usig (1.3, this yields the represetatio ν (S Γ( p+ = π Γ( p+1 (x,θ p dθ dν (x S S Γ( p+ = θ p π Γ( p+1 dθ. S The last itegral may be related to the volume of, by usig the polar formula for the volume of, = θ dθ = s θ dσ (θ, S S where σ deotes the ormalized Lebesgue measure o S ad s = π Γ( is its ( 1-dimesioal volume. Namely, by Jese s iequality, we have ( θ dσ (θ θ p dσ p (θ, or equivaletly Thus, ν (S θ p dθ p sp+ (. Γ( p+ sp+ π Γ( p+1 p p ( s = Γ( p+ π c p Γ( p+1 Γ( Γ( p+1, p where c > 0 is a absolute costat. Here we used the well-kow asymptotic relatio s 1 c 0 as, for some absolute c 0 > 0, as well as the estimate Γ( p+ /Γ( (cp/. p
ESTIATES FOR OENTS OF GENERAL EASURES ON CONVEX BOIES 7 Applyig this lower estimate o the left-had side of (.1, we get ( p+1 mi (x,θ p dµ(x C p Γ p. θ S It remais to take the miimum over all admissible ad ote that Γ ( p+1 1/p c p for p 1. To prove Lemma 1.5, we eed the followig simple assertio. Lemma.1. Give a measurable fuctio g : R [0,1], the fuctio ( q +1 1 q t q q+1 g(tdt is o-decreasig o (,. Proof. The stadard argumet is similar to the oe used i the proof of Lemma.4 i [7]. Give < q < p, let A > 0 be defied by Usig t q g(tdt = A A t q dt = q +1 Aq+1. t p A p q t q ( t A ad t p A p q t q ( t A, together with the assumptio 0 g 1, we the have (1 g(t t p dt g(t t p dt Hece that is, t A ( p+1 t >A ( A p q t A (1 g(t t q dt t >A g(t t q dt = 0. g(t t p dt A A t p dt = p+1 Ap+1, 1 ( g(t t p p+1 q +1 1 dt A = g(t t q q+1 dt. Proof of Lemma 1.5. Oe may assume that f is itegrable. For t R, itroduce the hyperplaes H t = {(x,ξ = t}. Sice f is Borel measurable o R, the fuctio H g(t = t f(xdx sup s H s f(xdx is Borel measurable o the lie ad satisfies g = 1. By Fubii s theorem, (x,ξ t p p f(xdx g(tdt = sup s H s f(xdx, f(xdx g(tdt = sup s H s f(xdx.
8 SERGEY BOBOV, BO AZ LARTAG, AN ALEXANER OLOBSY Applyig Lemma.1 to the fuctio g with q = 0 ad p, we get 1 ( p+1 1 g(tdt t p p+1 g(tdt, which i our case becomes ( p+1 ( p f(xdx (p+1 sup f(xdx (x,ξ p f(xdx. s H s Proof of Theorem 1.9. Let L p be such that the distace d ovr (,L p is almost realized, i.e., for small δ > 0, suppose that (1+δd B (,L p. Itegratig both sides of (1.7 over ξ S with respect to the measure ν from (1.3, we get x p f(xdx x p f(xdx. Equivaletly, usig the itegrals i spherical coordiates, we have ( θ 0 θ p p r +p θ f(rθdr dθ = S S θ p I(θ dθ, where θ I(θ = θ p θ θ r +p f(rθdr. For θ S such that θ θ, the latter quatity is o-egative, ad oe may proceed by writig I(θ = θ θ θ θ ( θ p r p r +p f(rθdr + r f(rθdr. But, i the case θ θ, we have I(θ = θ p θ θ r p r f(rθdr θ θ θ θ which is the same upper boud o I(θ as before. Thus, p ( θ θ 0 S θ p r f(rθdr dθ, that is, p θ S θ p ( θ Now, by the choice of, 0 θ r f(rθdr dθ p θ S θ p r f(rθdr r f(rθdr, ( θ θ θ (1+δd B (,L p θ 0 r f(rθdr dθ.
