The first order dispersion intertion between two toms in n exited stte must ount for the ft tht the two toms re oupled vi the eletromgneti field nd must inlude effets from bkground medi, retrdtion nd finite size. We show tht finite size orretions when two prtiles re lose hnge the dispersion intertions in wter by severl orders of mgnitude. We onsider s four illustrtive exmples helium toms, krypton toms, phosphte ions, nd iodide ions. We demonstrte tht due to lrge nelltion effets retrdtion domintes the intertion for helium tom pirs in n isotropi exited stte down to the very smll tom-tom seprtions where finite size orretions re lso importnt. We im in the present letter t lulting the Csimir- Polder intertion energy between toms helium nd krypton) nd ions phosphte nd iodine) dissolved in wter nd to study wht effets the finite tomi size hs on this intertion. We lso give results for the resonne intertion energy between He toms. The lultions presented re for very smll intertomi distneslower thn ten Ångströms) t whih effets beyond dipole-dipole dispersion intertions re importnt. The intertion energy between ground stte helium nd krypton toms, in vuum, re well known from stndrd b initio lultions. They show potentil energy minimum min =2.97Å, U min =0.00 ev for He 2, nd min =4 Å, U min =0.06 ev for Kr 2, where is the tom-tom seprtion nd U is the intertion potentil). The minimum is the result of repulsive short-rnge eletro-stti prt nd n ttrtive long-rnge prt, due eletron orreltion. We re here onerned with the ttrtive long rnge prt of the potentil only. The formlism we use fouses on the dipole-dipole dispersion intertion. At very smll seprtion higher order multipolr ontributions ontribute nd when there is substntil wve-funtion overlp one hs to resort to quntum-hemistry lultions sine the eletrons re no longer onfined to their respetive prtile. In our formlism we find tht the intertion stys finite when the prtiles ome lose to eh other. We emphsize tht the reson is tht the prtile rdii hve been ssumed to be finite. There re reent developments in the literture relted to our pproh. Thus Kysylyhyn et l. [] hve studied the intertion between finite-size nnoprtile ould be n tom) nd the surfe of solid, mking use of the lol-field method. Assuming tht the nnoprtile hs finite nonliner polrizbility, n intertion potentil is derivedtht is repulsivet short rngesnd hs n ttrtive long-rnge til. Moreover, Przybytek et l. [2, 3] hve done high preision work on the retrded Csimir-Polder potentilbetweentwohetoms. When > 00Åretrdp-

The nonretrded lultions yieldnvergevlueoffortheheliumboundsttetobe quite lrge, 47.Å, whih grees firly well with the mesured retrded) vlue of 52Å. It my lso be mentioned tht n extensive tretment of quntum eletrodynmil QED) intertions nd thermophysil properties of helium hve reently been given by Cenek et l. [4]. A reent pper by DiStsio et l. [5] deling with density funtionl quntum mehnil) theory of the intertion potentil between finite-sized quntum hrmoni osilltors expliitly tkes orbitl overlp into ount. They find results tht re similr to ours in wter. In both pprohes finite tomi size renders the intertion finite t zero tom-tom seprtion. Wht is evident in our theory is the removl of the divergenes t zero seprtion. In this letter we tret both the Csimir-Polder intertion nd the resonne intertion. We begin by giving brief introdution to resonne intertion. Ninhm nd o-workers [6] demonstrted dede go tht, due to some drsti pproximtions, the underlying theory of resonne intertions in free spe derived from perturbtive QED is inorret t lrge distnes. [6 9] For smll seprtions the QED result hs been onsidered to be orret. However, the QED formlism supposes point dipolr desription. One im of this letter is to demonstrte how the tking into ount of finite tomi size nd bkground medium fundmentlly lters the resonne intertion energy. In the formlism one tom is in its ground stte nd the other in n exited stte. At resonne the exittion swithes bk nd forth between the two toms. The intertion n be seprted into three brnhes, the x-, y-, nd z-brnhwhere the nme of the brnh denotes in wht diretion the osillting dipoles re pointing. We let the z-diretion be defined by the line joining the two toms. When there is no preferred diretion for the exittion ll three brnhes re tivted. We refer to this se s isotropilly exited tom pirs. From writing up the equtions of motion for the exited system it is strightforwrd to derive the zero temperture Green s funtion for two identil nd isotropi) toms dissolved in wter [6, 0]. The resonne ondition [6] n be obtined from the following ondition: α ω) 2 T2 ω) = 0, where T is the suseptibility tensor nd α ω) the exess polrisbility of the tom dissolved in wter. The exess polrisbilities α i)) nd tomi rdii ) for helium nd other noble gs toms dissolved in wter were derived s in severl ppers by Prsons nd Ninhm [, 2]. They were presented reently by Boström, Prsons, nd o-workers. [3] Dynmi polrisbilities of noble gs toms in vuum were lulted using Molpro [4] t oupled luster singles nd double CCSD) level of theory. An ug--pv6z bsis set [5, 6] ws used for seletion of noble gs toms He, Ne nd Ar while ug--pv5z ws used for Kr [7]). In this work we onsider helium nd krypton toms nd iodide nd phosphte ions. Polrisbilities, αi), in vuum were trnsformed to exess polrisbilities, α i), in wter vi the reltion for dieletri sphere embedded in dieletri medium [8,9], α i) = R 3 ε ε w )/ε +2ε w ). Here ε w is the dieletri funtion of wter nd R is the rdius of the tom. ε is the effetive dieletri funtion of the tomi sphere, estimted from the tomi polrisbility in vuum s ε i) = +4παi)/V, where V is the volume of the tomi sphere. In the se of two identil toms the bove resonne ondition n be seprted in one nti-symmetri nd one symmetri prt. Sine the exited symmetri stte hs muh shorter life time thn the nti-symmetri stte the system n be trpped in n exited ntisymmetri stte. The resonne intertion energy of this ntisymmetri stte n be evluted by simple expression for two dissolved toms exited in the j=x-, y-, or z-brnh, where z is in the diretion of the line onneting the two toms) in wter, U j ) = h d 2π ln[+α i)t jj i)]. ) The orresponding vn der Wls Csimir-Polder) intertion between isotropi) toms is given by the following expression: U CP ) = h 2 j=x,y,z d [ 2π ln α i) 2 T jj i) 2], 2) where is the distne between the two toms. In wht follows we nme this the expnded theory nd when the full logrithmi expression is used the non-expnded theory. We now present the theoretil frmework used to study how finite tomi size influenes the Csimir-Polder intertion nd the resonne intertion when two toms re nerehother. We observe tht the resonne intertion t lose ontt depends on the rdius 3. This should be ompred to the orresponding result for the ground stte Csimir-Polder intertion tht depends on the rdius 6. The nlytil symptotes re only vlid for tomi systems where the logrithm n be series expnded. It is importnt to note tht we re only onsidering the dispersive dipole intertion. We hve not inluded ontributions due to higher-order multipole ontributions. [22 24] We show the resulting dipole-dipole, dipole-qudrupole, nd qudrupole-qudrupole dispersion potentils [22] in n expnded theory for two helium toms in vuum in Fig. note tht the dipole-dipole intertionis ftor of2too smll in Ref. A full quntum mehnil moleulr simultion ould be used to study how well our preditions represent the effet of wter moleules on the intertion energy between two toms t smll intertomi distnes. However, it should be observed tht while quntum hemistry lultion is n lterntive wy to model the intertion tht too hs its limittions. Quntum hemistry does not, for exmple, in n urte wy ount for the oupling of toms in n exited stte. We show in Fig.2 the fully retrded finite temperture Csimir-Polderground-stte) intertion between two helium toms dissolved in wter. Finite size orretions prevent the ttrtion from going to infinity when two toms ome very lose together. This is onsistent with the ground stte Csimir-Polder intertion between finite sizetomsinvuum found bymhntynd Ninhm. [2] In Fig.3 we onsider the effet of inluding retrdtion nd finite size on the resonne intertion between isotropilly exited ditomi helium dissolved in wter. Finite size effets soften the ttrtion t very smll seprtions but eqully importnt is the effet of retrdtion. One observes tht for isotropilly exited ditomi helium the non-retrded pproximtion whih neglets finite size is not pplible t ny seprtion. Both finite size dependene nd retrdtion must be onsidered in order to hve theory tht works for ll seprtions. For isotropilly exited tom pirs the first expnsion term in the logrithm nels out nd the leding non-retrded term is 6. The dominting term is retrded term 4. We ompre in Fig.4 the effet of finite size on the ttrtive x-mode exittion nd repulsive z-mode exittion. It is seen tht while finite size effets re oneptully importnt t very smll tom-tom seprtions these effets ply little role for seprtions beyond two tomi rdii. Retrdtion effets re negligible for eh of the ontributing terms. However, there is lrge nelltion effet between the different U j ) terms) when the ontributions re dded together nd retrdtion is importnt for the resonne intertion between isotropilly exited tom pirs s ws seen in Fig.3. One importnt point in this letter is tht while retrdtion redues the x, y, nd z exited stte resonne intertions / 3 / 4 ) the opposite is found for resonne intertion between isotropilly exited tom pirs / 6 / 4 ). Severe problems hve been noted with the epted theoretil expressions for the resonne intertion between identil tom pirs in n exited stte when the toms re fr prt [6, 7, 9]. Different reserh groups find very different results for the first order dispersion potentil for tom pirs in n exited stte t tht seprtion limit. They do however find the sme result when two toms or moleules re lose together. There re no debte onerning ground stte intertions, nor for nisotropi) resonne intertions in the non-retrded limit. However, our results for isotropilly exited tom pirs propose tht retrdtion due to strong nelltions between x-, y- nd z-omponents) ould be importnt lmost down to lose ontt. This my provide se where experiments my be ble to selet the more pproprite wy to lulte intertions between exited tom pirs. As we hve demonstrted in this letter finite size effets tht hve been ignored influene the resonne intertion between two toms for seprtions of the order of few tomi rdii. More substntil long rnge effets re expeted for toms, moleules nd ions with lrger Gussin rdii. We end by giving in Fig.5 nd Fig.6 s further exmples the resulting Csimir-Polder intertion for pir of krypton toms, pir of phosphte ions, nd pir of p-4
