axiv:6.358v [math.ap] Nov 6 Remaks on the Hady type inequalities with emainde tems in the famewok of equalities Abstact. Shuji Machihaa, Tohu Ozawa, and Hidemitsu Wadade Dedicated to Pofesso Nakao Hayashi on the occasion of his sitieth bithday We study the Hady type inequalities in the famewok of equalities. We pesent equalities which immediately imply Hady type inequalities by dopping the emainde tem. Simultaneously we give a chaacteization of the class of functions which makes the emainde tem vanish. A point of ou obsevation is to apply an othogonality popeties in geneal Hilbet space, and which gives a simple and diect undestanding of the Hady type inequalities as well as the noneistence of nontivial etemizes.. Intoduction and the main esults Let Ω be a domain in R n with n 3 and assume Ω. The classical Hady inequality states that the inequality.) ) n Ω f d f d Ω holds fo all f H Ω), whee the constant ) n is best-possible. It is also well-known that the inequality.) admits no nontivial etemizes, and this fact implies a possibility fo.) to be impoved by adding some emainde tems. In fact, the authos in [9] poved that the following impoved Hady inequality.) ) n Ω f d+λ f d f d Ω Ω holdsfo all f H Ω) povidedthat Ω is bounded, whee the constant Λin.) is given by Λ Λn,Ω) z ω n Ω n, and ω n and Ω denote the Lebesgue measues of the unit ball and Ω on R n, espectively, and the absolute constant z denotes the fist zeo of the Bessel function J z). The constant Λ is optimal if Ω is a ball, but still the inequality.) admits no nontivial etemizes. Moe geneally, the authos in [9] obtained the inequality ) n Ω f ) d+ Λ f p p d f d Ω Ω Mathematics Subject Classification. 6D, 46E35. Key wods and phases. 2 S. Machihaa, T. Ozawa, and H. Wadade fo f H n Ω), whee < p < n and Λ is a positive constant independent of u. Simila impovements have been done fo the Hady inequality not only in the L -setting but in L p -setting with some emainde tems, see fo instance [3, 7, 8,, 35]. Hady type inequalities ae known as useful mathematical tools in vaious fields such as eal analysis, functional analysis, pobability and patial diffeential equations. In fact, Hady type inequalities and thei impovements ae applied in many contets. Fo instance, Hady type inequalities wee utilized in investigating the stability of solutions of semi-linea elliptic and paabolic equations in [9, ]. As fo the eistence and asymptotic behavio of solutions of the heat equation involving singula potentials, see [, 35]. Among othes we efe to [, 5, 6, 8, 7, 3] fo the concete applications of Hady type inequalities. We also efe to [3, 33] fo a compehensive undestanding of Hady type inequalities. Based on the histoical emaks on the Hady type inequalities, ou pupose in this pape is to establish the classical Hady inequalities in the fame wok of equalities which immediately imply the Hady inequalities by dopping the emainde tems. At the same time, those equalities chaacteize the fom of the vanishing emainde tems. Ou method on the basis of equalities pesumably povides a simple and diect undestanding of the Hady type inequalities as well as the noneistence of nontivial etemizes. In what follows, we always assume Ω R n and the standad L R n ) nom is denoted by. Then the Hady type inequalities in L -setting that we discuss in this pape ae the following: f n f.3), n 3, f f R sup R> n log R n f.4), n, p.5) d p) p+ f) d, p.6) d p) p+ f) d, ) whee f R ) f R and p >. The inequalities.3),.5), and.6) ae standad see [9] fo instance), while.4) is athe new see [8, 3]). In addition, as we noticed in [3], the logaithmic Hady inequality.4) has a scaling popety. We state ou main theoems. We denote by the adial deivative defined by n j j j. The space D, R n ) denotes the completion of C R n ) unde the Diichlet nom. Also the notation S n denotes the unit sphee in R n endowed with the Lebesgue measue σ. Ou fist theoem now eads: Theoem. Let n 3. Then the equalities ) n f f f + n f.7).8) f n n f)
Hady type inequalities 3 hold fo all f D, R n ). Moeove, the second tem in the ight hand side of.7) o.8) vanishes if and only if f takes the fom ).9) f) n ϕ fo some function ϕ : S n C, which makes the left hand side of.7) infinite unless S n ϕω) dσω) :.) f ϕ ) n / L R n ). We emak that as in.), functions of the fom.9) imply the noneistence of nontivial etemizes fo.3). The coesponding integal diveges at both oigin and infinity. A simila esult to Theoem can be found in [6, 5]. Howeve, the essential ideas fo the poofs ae diffeent. Indeed, the poof in [6] is done by diect calculations with espect to the quotient with the optimize of a Hady type inequality. On the othe hand, we shall pove Theoem by applying an othogonality agument in geneal Hilbet space settings. Moe pecisely, an equality.) ) n f f n f + f has been obseved in [6, 5]. We should emak that.7) and.) ae the same fo adially symmetic functions and ae not the same fo nonadial functions. In fact, the Diichlet integal is decomposed into adial and spheical components as n f f + j ) j f. j Net, we state the logaithmic Hady type equalities in the citical weighted Sobolev spaces..).3) Theoem. Let n. Then the equalities 4 f f R n log R n f n f ) n f + f f R log R log R n f f R log R hold fo all R > and all f L loc Rn ) with f L R n ), whee f n R is ) defined by f R ) f R. Moeove, the second tem in the ight hand side of.) o.3) vanishes if and only if f f R takes the fom.4) f) f R ) log R ) ϕ

As in.5), functions of the fom.4) imply the noneistence of nontivial etemizes fo.4). The coesponding integal diveges at both oigin and infinity and, in addition, on the sphee of adius R >. The final theoem in this pape is one-dimensional Hady type equalities stated as follows..6).7) Theoem 3. Let n and p >. Then: ) The equalities p ) p+ d p+ f) d p+ f) p d p+ f) d d ) p d d hold fo all f L loc, ) with p+ f L, ). Moeove, the second tem in the ight hand side of.6) vanishes if and only if c p fo some c C, which makes the left hand side of.6) infinite unless c : p+ c / L, ). ) The equalities p ) p+ d p+ f) d p+ f) p d p+ f) d d ) p d d hold fo all f L loc, ) with p+ f L, ). Moeove, the second tem in the ight hand side of.7) vanishes if and only if c p
Hady type inequalities 5 fo some c C, which makes the left hand side of.7) infinite unless c : p+ c / L, ). In the ecent pape [6], the authos actually etended the equalities in Theoem with n in L n R n )-settings. Howeve, we shall e-pove Theoem in this pape in ode to compae the sub-citical case, the citical case and the one-dimensional case coesponding to Theoem, Theoem and Theoem 3, espectively. The poofs of all theoems in this pape is essentially based on othogonality in geneal Hilbet space settings. Theefoe, thee would be a possibility to establish othe equalities on the functional spaces equipped with the Hilbet stuctue by applying ou method. Concening elated efeences to Hady type inequalities, we also efe to [9], [], [4], [] and [3]. Indeed, when a function f is adially symmetic on the unit ball at the oigin, the coesponding inequality to.7) o.8) was obtained by [9, p.454]. In [], authos established the Hady inequalities with emainde tems on bounded domains by utilizing the agument used in [9]. The papes [], [4] and [3] poposed simple poofs of classical Hady, Rellich and Caffaelli- Kohn-Nienbeg inequalities. We study the Hady type inequalities in a diffeent pespective fom those papes above in the sense that we deive the inequalities fom equalities. We pove Theoems - 3 in subsequent sections. Fo simplicity, we pove the theoems fo f C Rn ;C). The poofs ae completed by density see [8, 3]). The main idea of the poofs is given by the following othogonality lemma. Lemma.. Let X be a scala poduct space with scala poduct ). Let c >. Then the following statements ae equivalent. ) The equality.8) u creu v) holds fo all u,v X. ) The equality.9) u 4c v u+cv holds fo all u,v X. Poof. The lemma follows by anothe equivalent equality:.) Reu u+cv). The standad poof of Hady inequality is based on the inequality.) u c u v Q.E.D.
6 S. Machihaa, T. Ozawa, and H. Wadade by the Cauchy-Schwaz inequality applied to.8). In this pape, we egad.8) as the othogonality elation.) of u and u+cv and then we egad cv as a diffeence: cv u+cv) u. The equality.9) gives an eplicit condition fo the case of equality in.). Thee ae many papes on the Hady type inequalities and elated subjects. We efe the eades to [] [34] and efeences theein.. Poof of Theoem We intoduce pola coodinates,ω), ), ) Sn and we wite the integal on the left hand side of.7) as Rn f) d n 3 S n fω) dσω)d n Re n fω)ω fω)dσω)d S n n Re f) R f)d, n whee we have caied out integation by pats in the adial vaiable. The emainde tems vanish if and only if n f), namely, n f is a function on the sphee. This completes the poof of Theoem. 3. Poof of Theoem Let R >. In the same way as in the poof of Theoem, we calculate <R R f) f R ) ) d n log R ) log R fω) frω) S dσω)d n R Re log R fω) frω))ω fω)dσω)d S n f) f R ) f) Re <R n log R n d, whee we have caied out integation by pats in and the contibution on the bounday vanishes since log R R dt t R R R R and 3.) fω) frω) f R ).
