1 On The Numbe Of Unlabeled Bipatite Gaphs Abdullah Atmaca and A Yavuz Ouç axiv: v [mathco] 4 May 207 Abstact This pape solves a poblem that was stated by M A Haison in 973 [] This poblem, that has emained open since then is concened with counting equivalence classes of n binay matices unde ow and column pemutations Let I and O denote two sets of vetices, whee I O = Φ, I = n, O =, and B u (n, denote the set of unlabeled gaphs whose edges connect vetices in I and O Haison established that the numbe of equivalence classes of n binay matices is equal to the numbe of unlabeled gaphs in B u (n, He also computed the numbe of such matices (hence such gaphs fo small values of n and without poviding an asymptotic fomula B u (n, Hee, such an asymptotic fomula is povided by poving the following two-sided equality using Polya s Counting Theoem whee n < Intoduction ( +2 n B u (n, 2 ( +2 n The counting poblem that is consideed in this pape has been investigated in connection with the enumeation of unlabeled bipatite gaphs and binay matices[] Let (I, O, E denote a gaph with two disjoint sets of vetices, I, called left vetices and a set of vetices, O, called ight vetices, whee each edge in E connects a left vetex with a ight vetex We let n = I, = O, and efe to such a gaph as an (n, -bipatite gaph Let G = (I, O, E and G 2 = (I, O, E 2 be two (n, -bipatite gaphs, and α : I I and β : O O be both bijections The pai (α, β is an isomophism between G and G 2 povided that ((α(v, β(v 2 E 2 if and only if (v, v 2 E, v I, v 2 O It is easy to establish that this mapping induces an equivalence elation, and patitions the set of 2 n (n, -bipatite gaphs into equivalence classes This equivalence elation captues the fact that the vetices in I and O ae unlabeled, and so each class of (n, -bipatite gaphs can be epesented by any one of the gaphs in that class without identifying the vetices in I and O Let B u (n, denote any set of (n, -bipatite gaphs that contains exactly one such gaph fom each of the equivalence classes of (n, -bipatite gaphs induced by the isomophism we defined It is easy to see that detemining B u (n, amounts to an enumeation of non-isomophic (n, -bipatite gaphs that will hencefoth be efeed to as unlabeled (n, -bipatite gaphs In [], Haison used Pólya s counting theoem to obtain an expession to compute the numbe of non-equivalent n binay matices This expession contains a nested sum, in which one sum is caied ove all patitions of n while the othe is caied ove all patitions of, whee the agument of the nested sum involves factoial, exponentiation and geatest common diviso (gcd computations He futhe established that this fomula also enumeates the numbe of unlabeled (n, -bipatite gaphs, ie, B u (n, A numbe of esults indiectly elated to Haison s wok and ou esult appeaed in the liteatue [2, 3, 4] In paticula, the set B u (n, in ou wok coincides ( Depatment of Compute Engineeing, Bilkent Univesity, Ankaa, Tukey Depatment of Electical and Compute Engineeing, Univesity of Mayland, College Pak, MD 20742
2 with the set of bicoloed gaphs descibed in Section 2 in [2] Wheeas [2] povides a counting polynomial fo the numbe of bicoloed gaphs, we focus on the asymptotic behavio of B u (n, in this pape Counting polynomials fo othe families of bipatite gaphs wee also epoted in [3] Likewise, [4] povides geneating functions fo elated bipatite gaph counting poblems without an asymptotic analysis as povided in this pape It should also be mentioned that some esults on asymptotic enumeation of cetain families of bipatite gaphs (binay matices have been epoted (see fo example, [5, 6, 7, 8] To the best of ou knowledge, ou wok povides the fist asymptotic enumeation of unlabelled bipatite gaphs Let S n denote the symmetic goup of pemutations of degee n acting on set N = {, 2,, n} Suppose that the pemutations in S n ae indexed by, 2,, in some abitay, but fixed manne The cycle index polynomial of S n is defined as follows([9],see p35, Eqn 22: Z Sn (x, x 2,, x n = n m= k= x p m,k k (2 whee p m,k denotes the numbe of cycles of length k in the disjoint cycle epesentation of the m th pemutation in S n, and n k= kp m,k = n, m =, 2,, Let S n S denote the diect poduct of symmetic goups S n and S acting on N = {, 2,, n} and R = {, 2,, }, espectively, whee n and ae positive integes such that n < It can be infeed fom Haison ([0],Lemma 4 and Theoem 42 that the cycle index polynomial of S n S is given by [0] Z Sn S (x, x 2,, x n = Z Sn (x, x 2,, x n Z S (x, x 2,, x, (3 whee is a paticula polynomial multiplication that distibutes ove odinay addition, and in which the multiplication X m Xt of two poduct tems, X m = x p m, x p m,2 2 x pm,n n and X t = x q t, x q t,2 2 x qt, in Z Sn and Z S, espectively, is defined as 2 n X m Xt = x p m,kq t,j gcd(k,j lcm(k,j (4 Haison futhe poved that []: k= j= B u (n, = Z Sn S (2, 2,, 2 (5 }{{} when 3 n n We need one moe fact that can be found in Haay ([9], p36 in ode to compute the stated lowe and uppe bound in (: Z S (x, x 2,, x = x i Z S i (x, x 2,, x i (6 whee Z S0 ( = i= Note that we will not display the zeo powes of x, x 2, in a cycle index polynomial We will use the same convention fo all othe cycle index polynomials thoughout the pape 2 The lcm(a,b and gcd(a,b denote least common multiple and geatest common diviso of a and b 3 As noted in [], n = case involves a diffeent cycle index polynomial Bounding B u(n, n will be consideed sepaately at the end of the pape 2
3 2 The Lowe Bound fo B u (n, Fom (3 and (5 we know that B u (n, =Z Sn S (2, 2,, 2, (7 =[Z Sn (x, x 2,, x n Z S (x, x 2,, x ](2, 2,, 2 (8 One of the tems in Z Sn (x, x 2,, x n is (xn and it is associated with the identity pemutation in S n Using this fact, we find B u (n, =Z Sn S (2, 2,, 2, (9 This poves Poposition Poof Using (6, we have and =[Z Sn (x, x 2,, x n Z S (x, x 2,, x ](2, 2,, 2, (0 [( ] = (xn + Z S (x, x 2,, x (2, 2,, 2, ( [( ] = Z S (x, x 2,, x (2, 2,, 2 +, (2 xn { } = [ x n! ] x q t,j j (2, 2,, 2 +, (3! t= j= { = [! } ] x n x q t,j j (2, 2,, 2 +, (4! t= j= { } = [! ] x nq t,jgcd(,j! lcm(,j (2, 2,, 2 +, (5 t= j= { } = [! ] x nq t,j j (2, 2,, 2 +, (6! t= j= { } =! 2 nq t,j +, (7! t= j= { } =! Hence the uppe bound that is claimed in the abstact holds fo n = Poving that it also holds fo n 2 equies a moe caeful analysis of the tems in We fist expess Z Sn (x, x 2,, x n as whee Z Sn (x, x 2,, x n Z S (x, x 2,, x (3 Z Sn (x, x 2,, x n = Z Sn [] + Z Sn [2] + + Z Sn [], (32 Z Sn [] = xn (33 Z Sn [2] = xn 2 x 2 (34 The fist tem is associated with the identity pemutation and the second tem is associated with any one of the pemutations in which all but two of the elements in N =, 2,, n ae fixed to themselves The emaining Z Sn [i] = n k= xp i,k k, 3 i tems epesent all the othe poduct tems in the cycle index polynomial of S n with no paticula association with the pemutations in S n Similaly, we set Z S (x, x 2,, x =!! t= j= xq t,j j without identifying the actual poduct tems with any paticula pemutation in S The following equations obviously hold as the sum of the lengths of all the cycles in any cycle disjoint epesentation of a pemutation in S n and S must be n and, espectively n kp i,k = n, i, (35 k= jq t,j =, t! (36 j= Now we can poceed with the computation of the uppe bound fo B u (n, that 4 Fist, we note
5 B u (n, =Z Sn S (2, 2, 2,, 2, (37 = [Z Sn (x, x 2,, x n Z S (x, x 2,, x ] (2, 2,, 2, (38 = [(Z Sn [] + Z Sn [2] + + Z Sn [] Z S (x, x 2,, x ] (2, 2,, 2, (39 = [Z Sn [] Z S (x, x 2,, x ] (2, 2,, 2 + [Z Sn [2] Z S (x, x 2,, x ] (2, 2,, [Z Sn [] Z S (x, x 2,, x ] (2, 2,, 2 (40 The fist tem in (40 is diectly computed fom Poposition Thus, it suffices to uppe bound each of the emaining tems in (40 to uppe bound B u (n, This will be established by poving [Z Sn [2] Z S (x, x 2,, x ] (2, 2,, 2 [Z Sn [i] Z S (x, x 2,, x ] (2, 2,, 2, i, 3 i We fist need some peliminay facts Lemma Fo all i, i, [Z Sn [i] Z S (x, x 2,, x ](2,, 2 = Z S (2 n k= pi,kgcd(k,,, 2 n k= pi,kgcd(k, (4 Poof [Z Sn [i] Z S (x, x 2,, x ](2, 2,, 2 = n x p i,k k! x q t,j j (2, 2,, 2,! k= t= j= (42 =! n x p i,k! k x q t,j j (2, 2,, 2, t= k= j= (43 =! n x p i,kq t,j gcd(k,j! lcm(k,j (2, 2,, 2, (44 Coollay =! t= j= k=! =! t= j= k=! t= j= n 2 p i,kq t,j gcd(k,j, (45 (2 n k= p i,kgcd(k,j q t,j, (46 = Z S (2 n k= p i,kgcd(k,,, 2 n k= p i,kgcd(k, (47 [Z Sn [2] Z S (x, x 2,, x ](2,, 2 = Z S (2 n, 2 n, 2 n, 2 n, (48 Poof By definition, p 2, = n 2, p 2,2 =, p 2,k = 0, 3 k n Substituting these into the last equation in Lemma poves the statement Lemma 2 n k= p i,k n, i, 2 i (49 Poof Recall fom (35 that n k= kp i,k = n, i, i Hence n k= p i,k = n n k= (k p i,k, and so the maximum value of n k= p i,k occus when n k= (k p i,k is minimized Futhemoe, at least one of p i,k, i, 2 i must be fo some k 2 since none of the pemutations we conside is the identity Thus, n k= (k p i,k and the statement follows Lemma 3 If n k= p i,kgcd(k, α + = n, then n k= p i,kgcd(k, α n, i, 2 i and fo any intege α 2 Poof If n k= p i,kgcd(k, α + = n as stated in the lemma, then we must have gcd(k, α + = k whee p i,k, i, 2 i Theefoe k α + Now if k = α +, then tivially gcd(k, α < k On the othe hand if k < α+, then α+ must be a multiple of k Theefoe, α can not be a multiple 5
