SOME EXAMPLES OF VECTOR BUNDLES IN THE BASE LOCUS OF THE GENERALIZED THETA DIVISOR axiv: v2 [math.ag] 4 Jul 2012 SEBASTIAN CASALAINA-MARTIN, TAWANDA GWENA, AND MONTSERRAT TEIXIDOR I BIGAS Abstact. We show that on the moduli space of semi-stable vecto bundles of fixed ank and deteminant (of any degee on a cuve, the base locus of the theta diviso as well as its n-multiples is lage. This extends known esults fo the case of tivial deteminant and n = 1. Intoduction Let C be a smooth pojective cuve ove C of genus g(c = g 2. Fix,d Z and 1. Conside the moduli space U (,d of (equivalence classes of semi-stable vecto bundles on C of ank and degee d. Fo a line bundle L Pic d (C, conside the subspace SU (,L U (,d of vecto bundles with deteminant L. Note that because of the isomophisms given by tensoing with a line bundle, thee ae at most not necessaily isomophic moduli spaces U (, d. Theefoe, it suffices to conside the slope modulo integes. In the case of fixed deteminant, only the degee of L is elevant. Theeisanamplelinebundle L onsu (,L,calledthedeteminant linebundle, suchthatpic(su (,L = Z L [3]. Wewillbeinteested in the base locus of the linea system L n on SU (,L, fo positive integes n. When d = 0, (o equivalently when divides d, a geat deal is known about this base locus. In [10], Raynaud povided a finite numbe of vecto bundles in the base locus fo vey high ank with espect to the genus. Late, Popa [8] showed that thee ae positive dimensional families of such examples. Some impovements on those esults wee obtained in [1], [4]. Finally, [5] gave, at least theoetically, a chaacteization of all the points in the base locus (see also [6]. Date: Septembe 14, The fist autho was patially suppoted by NSF MSPRF gant DMS He would like to thank Havad Univesity fo its hospitality duing the pepaation of this pape. 1
2 CASALAINA-MARTIN, GWENA, AND TEIXIDOR I BIGAS In shap contast with the degee zeo case, not much has been done fo othe degees, the main eason being that a chaacteization of fixed points was not available untill the Stange Duality Conjectue was poved in [7](see also [2]. We genealize these esults in two diections. Wepove that, fo any slope, one canfind a positive dimensional family in the base locus of the theta diviso in suitable ank. We also show that the base loci of L n with n > 1 ae often quite lage. Some emaks in this diection wee povided in [8]. Theoem 0.1. Fix a slope µ Q, and a level n N. Fo N N and L Pic µn (C, the base locus of the linea system L n on SU (N,L is lage povided N >> 0 and g >> 0. Fo moe pecise conditions on N and g, and fo estimates on the dimension of the base loci, see Theoem 2.5 and Theoem 2.7. We point out that Theoem 8.1 in [9] states that on SU (N, O C, L n is globally geneated fo n N2, and it has been conjectued to be fo 4 n N 1. The bound obtained in these notes is fa fom this. The main idea is to constuct explicit examples of vecto bundles as in [4], [8] by taking wedge powes of cetain vecto bundles obtained as kenels of an evaluation map. A technical point (cf, Pop. 2.1 using esults in [11] and [7] shows that these ae in the base locus. 1. Peliminaies Given L Pic d (Cand F U ( F,d F such that µ(ξ F = g 1 fo ξ SU (,L set Θ F = {ξ SU (,L : h 0 (ξ F > 0}. This definition of Θ F depends on the choice of suitable,l that, fo simplicity, ae not included in the notation. Fom µ(ξ F = g 1, F = n fo some n N. It is well gcd(,d known that if Θ F is a diviso, then Θ F L n. The Stange Duality Theoem(Theo. 4[7]implies thatthelinea system L n isspanned by such divisos, and thus its base locus equals {ξ SU (,L : h 0 (F ξ > 0 F U ( F,d F }. Lemma 1.1. Let L Pic d (C, and suppose that on SU (,L the base locus of L n has dimension b. If, L Pic d (C, and d d Z, then the base locus of L n on SU (,L has dimension at least b+( 2 (g 1+1 δ,, whee δ, is the Konecke delta. Poof. It suffices to conside slopes up to integes. If d = d, conside diect sums of vecto bundles of slope d, and of the appopiate anks (see [4] Coollay 5.3.
BASE LOCUS OF THE GENERALIZED THETA DIVISOR 3 Given a globally geneated vecto bundle E on C, define a vecto bundle M E as the kenel of the evaluation map 0 M E H 0 (E O C E 0. Fom [4] Thm. 1.1 and 1.2, if d E 2 E g > g and 0 < i < d E E g, the map given by E i ME is geneically finite. Below, we give some conditions that insue that fo each E U (( E,L, the coesponding i ME is in the base locus of L n (de on SU E g i,l ( d E E g 1 i 1 fo cetain n. 2. Examples Poposition 2.1. If E U ( E,d E, and F,i N satisfy: (1 F id E N, d E E g (2 g 1 de E g g E F i g, then setting d F = F (g 1 Fid E, d E E g Θ i M E := {F U ( F,d F : h 0 (F i M E > 0} = U ( F,d F. Poof. Condition (2 above implies that d E E g > i > 0 so i ME is well defined. Fom (1 the definition of d F makes sense and fo F U ( F,d F, µ( i ME F = g 1. Fom [4], Pop. 5.1, fo a geneic effective diviso D i of degee i, thee is an immesion O(D i i ME. Hence, it is enough to show that a geneal vecto bundle F U ( F,d F can be witten as an extension of vecto bundles 0 O C ( D i F F 0. Since i g, O C ( D i is a geneal line bundle of degee i. Fom [11] a geneal F U ( F,d F can be witten as such an extension so long as µ(f µ(o C ( D i g 1. Fom the shot exact sequence above and the definition of d F, µ(f µ(o C ( D i = F(g 1 i +i d E E g. F 1 Condition (2 ensues that the needed inequality is satisfied. Coollay 2.2. If E U ( E,d E with µ(e = ( a b g fo some a,b N, and F,i N satisfy the following condtions: (1 F i a N, a b (2 (g 1 a b Fi a a b Fg a, a b then setting d F = F (g 1 F i a, a b Θ i M E := {F U ( F,d F : h 0 (F i M E > 0} = U ( F,d F. d E
4 CASALAINA-MARTIN, GWENA, AND TEIXIDOR I BIGAS Remak 2.3. With the assumptions in the coollay, µ( i ME = ia ib (mod Z. Set = a b ank( i ME, and d = deg( i ME. If follows that = a b. Set n = gcd(,d gcd(a b,ia F gcd(a b,ia. Fo any L Pic d (C a b and an appopiate line bundle η on C, it follows that i ME η SU (,L is a base point fo the linea system L n on SU (,L. In othe wods, with the assumptions above i M E η Θ F SU (,L F U ( F,d F. a b Poposition 2.4. Fix E, F,A,b,i N satisfying the following conditions (1 b E g (2 g 1 b i g A (3 F b A Set n = gcd( F,i b, = (Ag b F E i, d = (i A + i b F, and fix a line bundle L Pic d (C. On SU (,L the dimension of the base locus of L n is at least ( 2 E 1(g 1 Poof. Take a = A F + b,i = i A in the pevious coollay. Assumption (3 in the poposition insues that the map taking E M E is geneically finite ([4]. Theoem 2.5. Let µ Q, and suppose thee exists numbes i, F N with 1 i g 1 such that µ i F (mod Z. Suppose that N, E N, E 2, and N N 0 := ( F E g 2 i g. Fo L Pic µn (C, on SU (N,L, the base locus of the linea system L has dimension at least ((E 2 1+(N N 0 2 (g 1+1 δ N,N0. The same can be said fo the linea system L gcd( F,i. Poof. Take A = g and b = 1 in Poposition 2.4. Remak 2.6. Fo a given slope µ Q, taking a cuve of high enough genus, the theoem implies that the base locus is nonempty povided the ank is sufficiently lage. In paticula, Theoem 0.1 follows fom Theoem 2.5. Taking A = 2, b = 1, and i = F = g 1 in Pop 2.4, we get examples with lowe ank and highe level. Theoem 2.7. Suppose that N, E N, E 2, and ( 2g(g 1E N N 0 :=. 2(g 1
BASE LOCUS OF THE GENERALIZED THETA DIVISOR 5 Then on SU (N, O C, the base locus of the linea system L g 1 has dimension at least (( 2 E 1+(N N 0 2 (g 1+1 δ N,N0. Refeences [1] D.
