2 Introduction Electron-roton cattering at HERA roceed dominantly through the exchange of hoton with very mall virtuality (Q ' 0). An imortant fraction of the fl colliion contain high tranvere momentum (E T ) rocee. The reence of thi hard momentum cale allow the alication of erturbative QCD to redict cro ection for the roduction of two or more high-e T jet. In lowet order (LO) QCD, the hard cattering rocee can be claified in two tye [, ]. In the o-called direct roce, the hoton interact in a oint-like fahion with the quark which aear either in the QCD Comton cattering flq! gq or the hoton-gluon fuion roce flg! qμq. In the reolved roce, the hoton act a a ource of arton, which can catter with the arton coming out of the roton. Thee two rocee give two ditinctly different tye of high-e T event toologie. The oint-like interaction reult in event with a characteritic (+)-jet tructure, i.e. two high-e T jet and one jet of low E T fragment of the roton. The reolved hoton event have acharacteritic (+)-jet tructure, ince in addition to the two high-e T jet and the low-e T roton remnant, fragment coming from the hoton will roduce a econd low-e T jet. While in the (+)-jet event the total hoton energy contribute to the hard cattering roce, only a fraction articiate in the (+)-jet event. Several method for detecting the hoton remnant jet have been rooed and teted in Monte Carlo imulation, generally uing a cut on the energy in the hoton direction or other kinematical variable [3, 4]. Uing an E T cluter algorithm, the ZEUS collaboration wa actually able to elect event with two high-e T jet and a third cluter in the aroximate direction of the electron (hoton) beam [5]. They tudied the roertie of the hoton remnant jet and found them to agree with exectation. Thi how that hotoroduction event with a hoton remnant jet can be identified exerimentally. Unfortunately, thi doe not lead to a earation of the direct and reolved rocee, becaue their characterization decribed above i only valid in LO QCD. In NLO, the direct cro ection may alo have contribution with a hoton remnant jet. Therefore it detection doe not uniquely earate the reolved cro ection. In a comlete NLO calculation the direct contribution with a hoton remnant jet could be iolated, o that the remaining contribution could be comared with the (+)-jet configuration. Of coure, in thi cae the election rocedure in the exerimental analyi and in the theoretical calculation mut match. To make further rogre in thi direction, a comlete NLO calculation of the direct cro ection i needed which i flexible enough to incororate the oible election criteria for the high-e T jet and the low-e T remnant jet. NLO calculation of direct hotoroduction have been done in the at for incluive ingle hadron [6], incluive ingle jet [7, 8, 9], and for incluive dijet [7, 0] cro ection. Mot of thee reult are alicable only for ecial obervable in incluive ingle jet and dijet roduction. The leading order calculation of the direct comonent involve only two ubrocee: flq! gq and flg! qμq. By including term u to O(ffff ), new contribution arie. Thee are the one-loo contribution to flq! gq and flg! qμq and the three-body ubrocee flq! qgg, flq! qqμq, flq! qq 0 μq 0, and flg! gqμq. Beide the ultraviolet ingularitie in the one-loo contribution, which can be removed by renormalization, additional infrared and
3 collinear ingularitie occur. They are extracted with the dimenional regularization method. It i well known that for uitably defined incluive obervable the infrared ingularitie in the one-loo contribution will cancel againt thoe in the three-body tree diagram. The collinear ingularitie from initial tate radiation and q μq roduction at the hoton leg can be factorized and aborbed in the reective arton ditribution function. The hard collinear ingularitie from final tate radiation will cancel againt the correonding ingularitie in the one-loo grah. To achieve thi technically and to maintain alo the neceary flexibility for new choice of obervable, jet definition, and exerimental cut, we ue the o-called hae ace licing method. We introduce an invariant ma cut-off y, which allow u to earate the hae ace region containing the ingularitie. If y i choen ufficiently mall, the integration over the oft and collinear region can be erformed analytically in a traightforward way. Then y i jut a technical cut which need not be connected with the exerimental jet definition. Of coure, the uitably defined incluive one- and two-jet cro ection mut be indeendent ofy. Our method i very imilar to that of Baer et al. [7] who ued two ditinct cut-off arameter for oft and collinear ingularitie. The hae ace licing method with invariant ma cut-off ha been ued for many rocee. The calculation for hotoroduction roceed along the ame line a the calculation of higher order QCD correction for multijet cro ection in dee inelatic e cattering firt erformed by Graudenz []. The lan of the aer i a follow: In ection we review the LO calculation and fix our notation. The technique to erform the NLO calculation are exlained in ection 3. In ection 4 we reent ome reult for incluive one- and two-jet cro ection in order to demontrate the flexibility of our method. Section 5 contain a ummary of our concluion. In everal aendice we rovide our analytically calculated reult needed for the Monte Carlo comutation. Leading Order Cro Section. Photon Sectrum The cro ection we have comuted are eentially for kinematical condition a in the HERA exeriment. There, electron of E e =6:7 GeV roduce hoton with mall virtuality Q = q ' 0, which then collide with a roton beam of energy E = 80 GeV. q = e 0 e i the momentum tranfer of the electron to the hoton. 4 . Jet Cro Section in LO In leading order, the differential cro ection for two-jet roduction take a very imle form. The artonic ubrocee are flq! gq and flg! qμq, which we denote generically by flb!. b i the arton emitted from the roton with momentum 0 = x b. It ditribution function in the roton F b= (x b ;Mb ) deend on the momentum fraction x b and the factorization cale M b. The final tate arton have momenta and, which can be exreed by their tranvere momentum E T and their raiditie and. The convention i that the z direction i arallel to the roton beam a ued in the exerimental analyi. From energy and momentum conervation one obtain x a = E T e + e ; (3) E e x b = E T E (e + e ) : (4) Thu, the kinematical variable of the two jet are related to the caling variable x a and x b. 6 The cro ection for the two ubrocee flq! gq and flg! qμq are well known [3] and are given by dff dt (flq i! gq i ) = ß ffff Q i C F dff dt (flg! q iμq i ) = ffff Q i u u ß u t + t u ; (4) ; (5) where C F =(N C )=(N C ) and N C i the number of color. Thee cro ection are O(ffff ). The index i denote the quark flavor and Q i the quark charge. The magnitude of the hotongluon cro ection determine whether one i enitive to the gluon tructure function of the roton. 3 Next-To-Leading Order Cro Section The higher order correction are calculated a uual with the hel of dimenional regularization. Thi method regularize the ultraviolet ingularitie in the one-loo contribution, which are then ubtracted uing the modified minimal ubtraction (MS) cheme. Dimenional regularization can alo be ued for the infrared and collinear ingularitie. In the following ubection, we hall conider the virtual correction and the variou real correction needed to obtain finite cro ection in the limit dimenion n! Virtual Correction u to O(ffff ) The one-loo diagram for flq! gq and flg! qμq have an additional virtual gluon, which lead to an extra factor ff.interfering with the LO diagram of order O(ffff ) roduce the virtual correction to the! cro ection u to O(ffff ). Thee contribution are well known for many year from e + e! qμqg higher order QCD calculation [4, 5]. For the correonding hotoroduction cro ection, one ubtitute Q = 0 and erform the neceary croing. The reult can be found in [6, 6, 7]. We have alo comared with the reult in [] for dee inelatic cattering eq! e 0 gq and eg! e 0 qμq, which can be exreed by the invariant, t, and u after etting Q = 0. The tructure of the correction deend on the color factor C F, C F N C, and C F N f, where N f i the number of flavor in the qμq loo. For comletene and for later ue, we write the final reult in the form H V (flq i! gq i ) = e g μ 4ffl 8( ffl)q i ff ß ψ 4ßμ! ffl ( ffl) ρ C F V q (; t; u) N CC F V q (; t; u) ( ffl) 4 T q (; t; u) ψ! +C F ffl +ln μ 3 N f 6 N C ψ! The exreion for V q, V q, V g, and V g are collected in aendix A. (4) and (5)). g i the quark-gluon couling and μ i the renormalization cale. The term roortional to ( 3 N f 6 N C) reult from the renormalization counter term. The initial gluon in are averaged by alying a factor of =(( ffl)). 3. Real Correction u to O(ffff ) For the calculation of the hard cattering cro ection u to O(ffff ), we mut include all diagram with an additional arton in the final tate, i.e. flq! qgg, flq! qqμq, flq! qq 0 μq 0, and flg! gqμq. The four-vector of thee ubrocee will be labeled by q 0! 3, where q i the momentum of the incoming hoton and 0 i the momentum of the incoming arton. The invariant will be denoted by ij =( i + j ) and the reviouly defined Mandeltam variable, t, and u. For male arton, the! 3 contribution contain ingularitie at ij =0. They can be extracted with the dimenional regularization method and cancelled againt thoe aociated with the one-loo contribution. To achieve thi we go through the following te. Firt, the matrix element for the! 3 ubrocee are calculated in n dimenion. The correonding diagram are hown in Fig. and are claified a I, II,..., VII. They are quared and averaged/ummed over initial/final tate in and color and can be ued for ingoing quark, antiquark, and gluon with the hel of croing. The diagram III' account for ghot to cancel unhyical olarization of the gluon. Thi claification i the ame a in ref. []. Since the hadronic tenor i ymmetric,we need to conider only the roduct I I, II I, III I etc. Furthermore, the roduct V IV, VI IV, VII IV, VI V, VII V, and VII VI are not ingular and vanih with the cut-off decribing the boundary of the ingular region. Such term will be neglected conitently in the following. Next, one can ditinguih three clae of ingularitie in hotoroduction (Q ' 0) deending on which roagator in the quared matrix element vanih. Examle for thee three clae are hown in Fig. 3. The X mark the roagator leading to the divergence. In the firt grah, it i the invariant 3 given by momenta of the final tate. The reult i a ecial kind of two-jet cro ection, where the recombination of two arton into one jet or the recombination of a arton with the hoton or roton remnant jet i done with an invariant ma cut-off y. In LO, thi cro ection wa written down in (9). The contribution from the hoton initial tate ingularitie are denoted d~ff dt (ab! ). d~ff dt (flq! ) and d~ff dt (flg! ) originate from the integration of the oft and collinear ingularitie of the arton initial tate. For y F! 0, thee term behave like ( ln y F ), which lead to unhyical negative cro ection for very mall y F. Thu if y i ued a a hyical cut, it mut be ufficiently large. In mot of the alication, we hall ue thee reult for comuting incluive cro ection, in which the y deendence of the two-jet cro ection cancel againt the y deendence of the numerically calculated three-jet cro ection. The quadratic term in (ln y F ) are connected with the oft divergence of the three-arton final tate. The contribution from the hoton initial tate ingularitie necearily have a hoton remnant. They deend on the cut-off y I only through term roortional to (ln y I ). Thi contribution can be conidered earately only if y I iahyical cut, i.e. if it i ufficiently large. In cae one introduce other kinematical condition to define the hoton remnant term in the NLO direct cro ection, one mut add the aroriate three-body contribution. The dominant term for y J! 0 are again roortional to (ln y J ) and are related to the oft divergence in the arton initial tate. J doe not contribute after the aroriate croing of (t $ u). The reult in (70)-(8) are equivalent to thoe of Baer et al. [7]. They cannot be comared ince thee author introduce a different cut for integrating over the oft ingularitie. Intead of invariant mae, they ue a cut on the energy of the gluon. Term that are indeendent of oft ingularitie agree. For examle, thi i the cae for the cro ection in (79) coming from the collinear hoton initial tate ingularity. 4 Incluive One- and Two-Jet Cro Section In thi ection, we reent ome characteritic numerical reult for one- and two-jet cro ection which have been obtained with our method of licing the hae ace with invariant ma cut. In a hort communication we have ued thi method to calculate the differential two-jet cro ection a a function of average raidity μ = ( + ) of the two jet of highet tranvere energy with the cut on j j < 0:5 [0] and comared it to recent exerimental data of the ZEUS collaboration at HERA []. For thi aer, we have calculated variou one- and two-jet ditribution without alying ecial cut on kinematical variable of the initial or final tate dictated by the exerimental analyi, although our aroach i articularly uitable for thi 7
19 a ha been hown in [0]. The inut for our calculation i lited in the following. We have choen the CTEQ3M roton tructure function [], which i a NLO arametrization with MS factorization and Λ (4) = 39 MeV. Thi Λ value i alo ued to calculate the two-loo ff value at the cale μ = E T. The factorization cale i alo M = E T.We do not aly a ecial cut on the hoton energy fraction x a in () but integrate from x a;min to. Q max = 4 GeV i the ame a ued in the jet analyi of the ZEUS exeriment []. The further calculation i baed on two earate contribution a et of two-body contribution and a et of three-body contribution. Each et i comletely finite, a all ingularitie have been cancelled or aborbed into tructure function. Each art deend earately on the cut-off y. If y i choen large enough, the two art determine hyically well defined two-jet and three-jet cro ection. Our analytic calculation are valid only for very mall y, ince term O(y) have been neglected in the analytic integration. For very mall y, the two iece have no hyical meaning. In thi cae, the (ln y) term force the two-body contribution to become negative, wherea the three-body cro ection are large and oitive. In [0], we have lotted uch cro ection for y =0 3.However, when the two- and three-body contribution are uerimoed to yield a uitable incluive cro ection, a for examle the incluive inglejet cro ection, the deendence on the cut-off y will cancel. Then, the earation of the two contribution with the cut-off y i only a technical device. The cut-off only erve to ditinguih the hae ace region, where the integration are done analytically, from thoe where they are done numerically. Furthermore, y mut be choen ufficiently mall o that exerimental cut imoed on kinematical variable do not interfere with the cancellation of the y deendence. Firt, we conider the incluive ingle-jet cro ection. To achieve thi, we mut chooe a jet definition, which recombine two nearly collinear arton. A uual, we adot the jet definition of the Snowma meeting [3]. According to thi definition, two arton i and j are recombined if R i;j <R, where R i = q ( i J ) +(ffi i ffi J ) and J ;ffi J are the raidity and the azimuthal angle of the recombined jet. We chooe R = in all of the following reult. Thi mean that two arton are conidered a two earate jet or a a ingle jet deending whether they lie outide or inide the cone with radiu R around the jet momentum. In ome cae, it may occur that two arton i and j qualify both a two individual jet i and j and a a combined jet ij. In thi cae, we make no further election a it i done in [4], where only the combined jet i counted. In NLO, the final tate may conit of two or three jet. The three-jet amle conit of all three-body contribution, which do not fulfill the cone condition. In Fig. 5, the reult for the incluive one-jet cro ection d ff=de T d are hown for variou raiditie =0;, and a a function of E T. The NLO and the LO rediction are lotted. The LO curve i calculated with the ame roton tructure function and the ame ff a the NLO curve. Only the hard cattering cro ection i calculated in LO. For R =, thee two cro ection differ only very little. Of coure, the NLO cro ection deend on R, wherea the LO curve doe not. To earate the curve for the three value, the reult for =0( =) ha been multilied by 0: (0:5). The maximum of the one-jet cro ection i near =. For E T = 0 GeV, thi can be een from Fig. 6, where d ff=de T d i lotted a a function of between = and ' 4:. At thi 8

21 value of E T, the kinematical boundarie, where the cro ection goe to zero, differ only little in LO and NLO. The k-factor for the NLO rediction i k ' : for the central region of 0 3. Our ingle-jet ditribution have been comared with the earlier reult of Bödeker [9], who ued the ubtraction method to cancel oft and collinear ingularitie. We found erfect agreement. To achieve thi, we had to ue a rather mall value of y =0 3. Furthermore, we had to add ome finite contribution of O() for y! 0, which correond to two-jet contribution where an outgoing arton i collinear to another outgoing or an ingoing arton without the correonding ole term in the! 3 matrix element after artial fractioning. We alo checked that our reult are indeendent of y, if y i ufficiently mall. The more eential reult are on incluive two-jet cro ection hown in the following figure. In Fig. 7, we reent d 3 ff=de T d d a a function of E T for = and variou choice of =0; ;. Here, E T and are the tranvere energy and the raidity of the o-called trigger jet. i the raidity of the econd jet, o that E T and E T are the jet with the highet tranvere momenta for the three-jet contribution. For exactly two jet in the final tate, we have E T = E T. In Fig. 7, we can ee how the cro ection decreae when i choen away from the maximum region at =. =ialway ket fixed. To dientangle the three curve, we have multilied the =( = 0) cro ection by a factor of 0:5 (0:) a in Fig. 5. The LO and NLO rediction are very much arallel. The k-factor i k ' :, imilar a in the one-jet cro ection. The only large difference between the LO and NLO cro ection occur at the boundary of the hae ace. For examle, the cro ection for = 0 ha an additional tail in the E T ditribution coming from the three-jet cro ection, where all three arton lie outide the cone with radiu R =. Such lot can be roduced alo for other choice of outide the region where the cro ection i maximal. We have tudied the incluive two-jet cro ection alo a a function of and for fixed E T. A an examle, we how in Fig. 8 the two-dimenional ditribution d 3 ff=de T d d for E T = 0 GeV in form of a lego-lot in the interval ; [ ; 4]. Over the whole range of and, the cro ection i aroximately ymmetric in and.we how thi cro ection in LO and NLO, and we ee clear difference between the LO and the NLO rediction. Thi become even clearer when we lot the rojection for fixed a a function of.in Fig. 9, thee rojection are hown for =0; ;, and 3 for LO and NLO. We ee that in NLO the cro ection i alway larger than the LO cro ection which i conitent with the k-factor larger than given above. It i clear that many more ditribution or artially integrated cro ection uing other two-jet variable can be calculated with the hae ace licing method. A a final alication, we have tudied the R and the y deendence of the two-jet cro ection, integrated over ; and E T with a minimal E T ;min = 0 GeV. The reult i hown in Fig. 0, where the LO cro ection i indeendent of R. The NLO cro ection i the um of oitive three-body contribution and negative two-body contribution, both calculated with the invariant ma cut y =0 3, and thi i not indeendent ofr. However, the deendence i rather weak. The cro ection increae with increaing R from R =0: tor =by a factor of and lie above the LO reult for R 0:6. For R<0:, the y cut become effective. Therefore we have lotted the curve only for R 0:. The um of the two-body and three-body contribution deend 0

Thi way, the ingled out tranvere energy of a jet can differ from the individual arton E T '. Thi R deendence ha been tudied before for the incluive one-jet cro ection with imilar reult [8, 9]. We have alo calculated the ame cro ection a a function of the invariant ma cut y without the cone recombination. In thi cae, the cut y oerate a a hyical cut. Of coure, the reult for the two-body contribution (being negative for y<3 0 ) and the three-body contribution (being above the um for y<3 0 ) only make ene for ufficiently large value of the y cut. For y! 0, the two-body (three-body) contribution decreae (increae) like ln y (ln y). The reult are reented in Fig.. Here we ee that the um of both contribution deend only moderately on y (/ ln y) due to the recombination of arton in the final tate. Thi deendence on y of the ummed contribution i equivalent to the R deendence of the integrated cro ection hown in Fig. 0. We remark that in Fig. the reective cro ection mut till be corrected by finite term of O(y). 25 5 Summary Differential cro ection d 3 ff=de T d d have been calculated in NLO for direct hotoroduction. Infrared and collinear ingularitie are cancelled with the hae ace licing method uing an invariant ma cut-off. Thi method allow to incororate variou cut on the final tate dictated by the analyi of exerimental data and to erform calculation for different choice of jet algorithm. Analytical formula for the different contribution giving the deendence on the licing arameter are derived. Thi i needed if one want to develo a comlete decrition of hotoroduction event including hadronization and other correction. Numerical reult for the two-jet incluive cro ection at HERA have been reented, and LO and NLO rediction have been comared. For a cone radiu of R =, the NLO correction lead to an increae of the order of 0% comared to the LO rediction which i calculated with the ame roton tructure function and the ame ff a the NLO rediction. 4
