MATERIALS A Genuine alabaster stone The alabaster used in BSAL fixtures is a solid natural stone with random dark veining which is created by minerals trapped in the alabaster in tones that range from grey-brown to red-brown as well as translucent veining that has a yellow tone. Each piece is unique. C Cultured alabaster resin This material is created by mixing alabaster dust with a resin. The resin is then molded to create the shape. 78 C U S T O M I N S T A L L A T I O N A C U S T O M S H O P C A S E S T U D Y THE CHALLENGE Design fixtures for the public spaces for a luxury condo conversion of a 1925 Georgian Revival building on the National Register of Historic Places. THE CONCEPT Retain and enhance the opulent details of this historic building: Coffered ceilings, Carrara and Kasota marble floors and walls, ornate bronze paneled elevators, elaborate mill and plaster work with custom fixtures and modern technology. THE DESIGN PLAN The lighting designer, working with the architects and our Custom Shop team, chose the fixtures that would maintain the design integrity of this architectural jewel: Bronze genuine alabaster pendants in 4, 5 and 6 diameters for the lobbies, matching wall sconces for the entrances and contemporary acrylic and brass pendants for the residential elevator lobbies, all with energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamping. 78

79 THE RESULT The historic charm of the landmark building was maintained and brought into the 21st century through the use of modern fixtures and technologies. The Phoenix received the 2003 Preservation Achievements Grand Jury Award given by the Greater Philadelphia Preservation Alliance and presented to Bower Lewis Thrower Architects and the developer.
