SOOT COLLECTING TANKS Additional soot collecting tanks installed on several vessels. Contamination of bilge water by soot has been virtually eliminated. This has reduced bilge water discoloration and helped to reduce erratic oil content monitor readings. 9 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
A number of vessels have been retrofitted with Primary Bilge Tanks. Features - PRIMARY BILGE TANK Weir separation improves removal of oil from bilge water Enables the removal of rust and heavy sediments Facilitates the separation of chemical and oil emulsions Easily integrates into existing bilge system Does not require an additional pump 10 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
INCINERATOR SETTLING TANK An additional incinerator settling tank has been installed on several vessels, including Tenerife Spirit during recent docking. New incinerators have also been installed in some vessels. 11 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
MECHANICAL SEALS CONVERSION Initial trials were conducted on Luzon Spirit where several pumps were converted to mechanical seals. Reports confirm leakage has been eliminated. Program has been deployed on several other vessels. A unified standard packing is on trial for smaller pumps where it is not viable to fit mechanical seals. 12 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
Advanced Oily Water Separators The Alfa Laval Ecostream oily water separator was installed on Falster Spirit. A rigorous test was conducted which proved the unit s capability to process bilge water to 0 ppm. Evaluation in operation is ongoing. 13 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
Advanced Oily Water Separators Upgraded Marinefloc oily water separator to CD-5 model on Kyeema Spirit. Unit complies with latest MEPC.107(49) requirements. An enhanced test proved the unit s capability to treat the test bilge water to zero oil content - 0 ppm. Evaluation in operation is ongoing. 14 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
POLISHING FILTERS FOR BILGE WATER TREATMENT Filter model OilXorb is fitted on Gotland Spirit. Previously vessel reported issues with bilge water discharge due to discoloration. Now discharge is crystal clear and ppm readings are below detectable limits. 15 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
POLISHING FILTERS FOR BILGE WATER TREATMENT Trials conducted with CJC OilAbsorb filtration unit on Torben Spirit. Initial results are promising, with OCM readings below 2 ppm. 16 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
IMPROVING GARBAGE HANDLING ON BOARD New heavy duty models of shipboard compactors have been sourced and ordered for some vessels, to reduce workload for garbage handling onboard. 17 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
ENVIRONMENTAL AUDITS First Environmental Audit completed onboard Everest Spirit at Yabucoa in Puerto Rico on 2 nd June Result was a clean bill of health The Lloyds Surveyor commented on the excellent assistance he received from the Chief Engineer and First Engineer, and commended the Master on the general condition of the ship. 18 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
FEEDBACK FROM FLEET SECAT Upgrading Programme Americas Spirit: Apr 06 - Providing all detergents, cleaning chemicals, and soot are kept from contaminating the bilge water, discharge is possible with only 2 5 ppm. Esther Spirit: Dec 05 - Overall, SECAT - dry bilge concept along with separate soot tank and OWS with after filter is an excellent combination Falster Spirit: Nov 05 - The SECAT modifications are very useful and have significantly improved bilge water management. 19 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
SECAT SUPPLEMENTARY RESEARCH Bilge water and soot samples are landed for lab analysis to determine best treatment options New designs for OWS bilge feed pumps being researched Researching back flushing arrangements for central coolers to eliminate bilge water contamination by fine mud Various soot disposal arrangements for vessels trading in special areas are being developed and evaluated Trials of various chemical products to improve bilge water treatment Guidelines for waste water handling were developed and incorporated in Waste Management Manual prepared by HSEQ 20 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
TEEKAY MARINE SERVICES MARINE AND TECHNICAL SERVICES Graphitization Phenomenon in Bilge Water Piping August 2006 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y SM
Graphitization findings For SIO, Whitebox installation incorporated into the existing piping Existing pipelines were either carbon steel or galvanized Planned maintenance regime requires 3 monthly inspection During inspection some vessels found to have a black deposit adhering to the walls of the pipe 22 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
Typical arrangment for Marinfloc White Box installation with original OWS and associated pipework 23 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
Examination of Graphization Deposits - Onboard testing indicated deposits were not oil based Deposits quickly dry out when exposed to air Laboratory tests ashore confirmed composition as products of corrosion All vessels asked to check and report Approximately 20% of vessels report deposits Varying degrees from light film to heavy deposits as shown in photo 24 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
Typical Galvanization Deposits. 25 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
Wet deposits create a shocking first impression 26 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
PSC Inspections - Examination of the OWS piping is routine for Port State Control inspectors and is included in USCG Guidance for Enforcement of Marpol Concerns raised over misinterpretation of deposit Further research and advice sought from Whitebox manufacturers Classification Societies Independent corrosion specialists Independent piping specialists 27 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
Independent Laboratory Analysis Report 28 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
Cause of Graphitization All parties concur insertion of Whitebox attributed to deposition Cause galvanic action due to material differential Specifically stainless steel inserted into carbon steel piping system Recommendations - Some recommended bonding of the flanges Others recommended insulating Actions Follow the Manufacturer of the Whitebox recommendation to implement the bonding solution 29 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
30 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
Results and follow up Actions - Bonding has significantly reduced or eliminated the deposits in most cases Maintenance records indicated no deposits in galvanized or anode protected installations Decision made to renew piping in galvanized steel at next Dry Dock If routine inspection indicates significant deposits occurring then pipes will be renewed in service 31 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
Conclusions - We are confident that galvanizing the pipes and the inclusion of additional anodes will mitigate the graphitization issues In the meantime it remains possible that such graphitized deposits will be found in overboard pipework To date Port State Control Inspectors have been satisfied with explanations and documentation Teekay s aim is to share industry best practices 32 T E E K A Y T H E M A R I N E M I D S T R E A M C O M P A N Y
