Upper critical field of p-wave superconductors with orthorhobic syetry Christopher Lörscher, Richard A Kle, Jingchuan Zhang, and Qiang Gu Departent of Physics, University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL USA Departent of Physics, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Beijing 83, China Dated: Septeber 7, 7 arxiv:.6667v cond-at.supr-con] 3 Oct WeextendtheScharnberg-KletheoryofH c inp-wavesuperconductorswithbrokensyetry to cases of partially broken syetry in an orthorhobic crystal, as is appropriate for the ore exotic ferroagnetic superconductor UCoGe in strong applied agnetic fields. For soe partially broken syetry cases, H c can iic upward curvature in all three crystal axis directions, and reasonable good fits to soe of the low-field UCoGe data are obtained. INRODUCTION There has long been an interest in the possibility of superconductivity with the paired electrons having an order paraeter consisting of a triplet spin configuration and the corresponding odd orbital syetry,, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]. The siplest odd orbital syetry has the p-wave for. In a crystal with a non-cubic structure, there can be a variety of different p-wave states,, 3, 4, 5]. Depending upon the teperature T, agnetic field H, and pressure P, there can be phases corresponding to different triplet states 6, 7, 8]. One of the easiest ways to characterize the p-wave states is by easureents of the T dependence of the upper critical field H c, ]. However, when ultiple phases are present in the sae crystal, as in UPt 3, a proper analysis requires a variety of experiental results 6, 7]. Recently, a new class of ferroagnetic superconductors has been of great interest. Presently this class consists of UGe 9], UIr ], URhGe ], UCoGe ], which except for UIr have orthorhobic crystal structures. For URhGe, the superconductivity arises within the ferroagnetic phase. That is also true for UCoGe at abient pressure, but when sufficient pressure is applied, the ferroagnetic phase disappears, leaving the superconducting phase without any obvious additional ferroagnetis 3, 4]. In the cases of UGe and UIr, applying pressure within the ferroagnetic phase induces the superconductivity 9, ]. In addition, polarized neutron experients have been interpreted as providing evidence for a field induced ferriagnetic state in UCoGe, with local oents of different agnitudes in opposite directions on the U and Co sites 5]. For a ferroagnetic superconductor with orthorhobic syetry, the possible order paraeter syetries were given by Mineev 6]. Hardy and Huxley easured B c T of URhGe at abient pressure in all three crystal axis directions 7]. Using only the slope at T c in each crystal direction as a fitting paraeter, they found that the Scharnberg-Kle theory fit their data quantitatively 7], assuing the crystal-aligned polar state with copletely broken syetry CBS ]. For this state, B c T has a distinctly different T dependence for B ĉ, along the polar axis, than for B â, and B ˆb, in the axial plane. By fitting only the slopes at T c in these three crystal axis directions, which eliinated the effective ass anisotropy for the closed orbits of the paired electrons in the three crystal directions, as in Landau diaagnetis and in the de Haas-van Alphen effect, the results iplied that the p- wave state ψ p c for all applied field directions. This rearkable fit for the low field regie of the superconducting state in URhGe did not require the inclusion of the ferroagnetis into the theory, as the only apparent effect of the agnetization was to give rise to a deagnetization jup in H c at the superconducting transition teperature, T c, beyond which the slopes of H c T were fit. In addition, H c exceeded the Pauli liit for all three crystal axis directions, providing copelling evidence for parallel-spin state Cooper pairing. Upon the discovery of agnetic-field induced reentrant superconductivity in URhGe 8], uch interest turned to the possible source of the high field superconducting phase. Then, superconductivity was discovered in UCoGe ], and H c T was easured for all three crystal axis directions 9], and all of the curves exhibited upward curvature ]. Subsequently, a highly anoalous S-shaped H c T curve was observed for T <.65T c with H b. Since M c at low fields, this change in the M direction only occurred in very pure, well aligned saples. This behavior ay also have soething to do with a reentrant phase, one that is close in field strength to the low-field phase,]. The first attepts to describe upward curvature in H c T in all three crystal directions were based either upon ferroagnetic fluctuations 3], or upon a crossover fro one parallel-spin state to another4]. Meanwhile, a ean-field theory of the copleentary effects of itinerant ferroagnetis and parallel-spin superconductivity was developed 5, 6]. To date, the field dependence of this utual enhanceent has not been investigated. Here, we study the case in which the p-wave pairing interaction strength is anisotropic, but finite in all crystal directions. Since H c T is essentially isotropic in the ab plane for saples of UCoGe with ediu purity 9], we studied the partially broken syetry PBS state as a function of the pairing interaction anisotropy. This can
give rise to a kink in H c T in at least one crystal axis direction 7]. CALCULATION Our calculation of H c T assues weak coupling for a hoogeneous clean type-ii aterial. H c is therefore found by solving the linearized Gor kov gap equation ] R,ˆk = πt dωk 4π NVˆk,ˆk exp ξ exp iξv F sgnˆk M Π R,ˆk. In our present case the interaction is of p-wave for Vˆk,ˆk = 3 i dξ V iˆki ˆk i S iˆx j >< S i ˆx j, which can be written in ters of the relevant spherical haronics. Here N is the single-spin density of states at the Feri energy, Π = i ea, and M =, 3 3 where = 3 /3 is the geoetric ean effective ass. We expand the order paraeter in the haronic oscillator states and the spherical haronics R,ˆk = = n== n >< n > Y θ k,φ k, 4 and insert Eq 4 into the Gor kov gap equation. The details are presented in the appendix. Then for B ê 3, the polar and two axial PBS states are obtained fro where and < n > α p n =, 5 < n > ± < n, >α ± n = b n < n > b n < n+, >, 6 a λ n α p n α n α + n = πt = NV 3 ] a p n, 7 = NV ] a a n, 8 = NV ] a a n, 9 3cos dθsinθ θ 3 dξe ξ ωn sin θ e ξ L n ξ, b n = πt dθ 3 sin θ dξe ξ ωn e ξ F n ξ, where λ = p a corresponds to the upper lower row in Eq., and ξ = ebξ vf sin θ, where =. The bare transition teperatures are given by T ci = γω D π e /NVi for i =,,3, where ω D is the appropriate energy cutoff, and γ.78 is the exponential of Euler s constant. Defining x ± n =< n > ± < n, >, we obtain two linear equations in the two variables x ± n α ± n x± n ±b n x + n +x n +b nx + n+ x n+ =, 3 where α + n = α n + δ and δ = ln Tc T c, where L n z are the Laguerre polynoials, and F n z = n p= z p+ n+n+n! p!p+!n p!. With soe algebraic anipulation shown in the appendix, one can show that these equations becoe a recursion relation where = a n,n+ x n+ +a n,nx n +a n,n x n, 4 a n,n+ = δb n α + c n, 5 n+ a n,n = δb n α + c n, 6 n a n,n = α n c n c n δc n +c n c n c n, 7 and b n c n = α + nα +. 8 n+ b n It is shown in the appendix that solving this recursion relation equation results in a continued fraction expression a a a a a4a4 a =. 9 Bysolvingthisequationforagivenvalueofδ, oneobtains h c for various PBS states δ >, δ < the ABM state δ =, and the CBS state δ =. Since the low-field H c T data ofhuy et al. for UCoGe suggeststhat it has uniaxial syetry, we have restricted our study to cases of uniaxial anisotropy given V = V V 3. A full orthorhobicsyetry treatent, in which V V V 3, would be necessary to fit the ore anoalous S-shaped H c T observed by Aoki et al. at higher externally applied fields. This will be treated in a future calculation,
3 along with the inclusion of the spontaneous and fieldinduced agnetization. However, as a first approxiation, we shall neglect the effects of the agnetization, as in the case of URhGe, in which the agnetization affects B c T = µ H c T by introducing a sharp deagnetization effect near T c. In Fig. a, we plotted the reduced field h c, c t = eb c / v F /πtc c versus the reduced teperaturet = T/T c forthepolarstateandforavarietyofpbss with.5 δ <, where δ = ln Tab c T. Note that these c c PBS states all have an inherent upward curvature, but since Tc c > Tab c, the polar state doinates near Tc c. However, for.5 < δ < there is a single kink in h c, c t, and for δ =.75, there are two kinks, due to two crossovers between the polar and PBS states. For δ =. there is no crossover to a PBS state. In Fig. b, we plotted h c, c t = eb c / 3 vf /πtc c versus t = T/T c for the CBS state and for various PBSs with.5 δ <. In this case, the CBS state doinatesneartotc c, but thereisacrossovertothe PBSstate for.3 < δ <, resulting in a single kink in h c, c t. Below we discuss how these kinks result in upward curvature in all three crystal axis directions, and fits to the UCoGe data by Huy et al. will be shown. FITS TO EXPERIMENTAL DATA Using our uniaxial anisotropic odel, we fit the least anoalous region of the upper critical field curves, where the syetry in the ab plane has not yet been broken by the field, obtained for ediu purity saples of UCoGe using the data of Huy et al. We have not included the spontaneous or field-induced agnetization into our calculations at this point. Future attepts to include the agnetization ay prove to be fruitful, at the very least to show that it s effect on H c T is inial, as in URhGe. In Fig. a, the best fit to the data for the field parallel to the c-axis is shown. The graph shows a distinct crossover fro polar solid red curve to a PBS state with a δ =.65. The experiental data diverges fro the theoretical values for larger fields. The inclusion of the spontaneous agnetization ight alter the fit, but a ore plausible explanation for this discrepancy is a field-dependent hopping ter related to the effective electron ass. As is discussed in Aoki et al., this increase in effective ass ay explain the S- shaped curvature of UCoGe s upper critical field in the anoalous high field regie ]. Proper consideration of these effects will be studied theoretically in the future. In Fig. b, the best fit to the data for δ =.85, which shows a distinct field-induced crossover fro the CBS to the PBS state. Using extreely clean single crystal saples, Aoki et al. has shown that the field alignent affects the up- h c h c a H c PBS δ=. PBS δ=. PBS δ=.5 PBS δ=.75 PBS δ=. PBS δ=. It is therefore of great iportance to calculate the angle dependence of the slope of the upper critical field, at least close to T c. Though the angle dependence of the polar state was analytically shown to be proportional to cos θ + 3 ab c sin θ] / by Scharnberg and Kle ], the angle dependence of the axial state has not yet been calculated analytically. This angle dependence ay prove useful in identifying the p-wave superconducting state present in certain aterials, and possibly suggest new experients on the well known p- wave superconductor URhGe.

The solid black and blue dashed curves are for the CBS state and the PBS state with δ =.85, respectively. The slopes at T c were adjusted to fit the data. CONCLUSIONS We found that it is possibleto fit the upwardcurvature of the H c T data fro ediu-purity UCoGe using a crossover fro the polar/cbs state to a PBS state. However, without taking account of the spontaneous agnetization, the fitting paraeter δ was different for the field in the c-axis direction than it was for the field in either the a or b directions. At the very least, the spontaneous and field-dependent agnetization should be included in future fits, using an anisotropic itinerant ferroagnetic superconductor odel siilar to that previously studied. APPENDIX We start with the linearized Gor kov gap equation, Eq., and and expand R,ˆk in the spherical haronics and the haronic oscillator basis states as in Eq. 4. b where α = iξv F eh sinθ k e iφ k and we have used the well known identity eâ+ˆb = eâeˆbe â,ˆb] ]] ]], which is valid for â, â,ˆb = ˆb, â,ˆb =. Siilarly, one can find expressions for the other two states, < n > = πtn 3 4 V < n dφ k, > π dξe ξ ωn e ehξ vfsin θ k < n e α a e αa n > < n > < n, > < n e α a e αa n + > < n +, > e iφ k + < n e α a e αa n > < n > e iφ k ] < n > = πtn 3 4 V + < n dφ k, > π dξe ξ ωn e ehξ vfsin θ k < n e α a e αa n > < n > + < n, > < n e α a e αa n + > < n +, > e iφ k < n e α a e αa n > < n > e iφ k ] It can be shown that < n e α a e αa n >= L n α and < n e α a e αa n >= e iφ k F n α and < n e α a e αa n + >= e iφ k F n α where L n x are the Laguerre Polynoials and F n z =
5 n p= z p+ n+n+n! p!p+!n p! fro which we can derive the equations for H c T. Equations - becoe < n 3 > = πtnv 3 dθ k sinθ k cos θ k dξe ξ ωn e ehξ v Fsin θ k L n α < n > 3 < n > = πtn 3 4 V < n dφ k, > π dξe ξ ωn e ehξ vfsin θ k L n α < n > < n, > F n α < n +, > ] +F n α < n > 4 < n > = πtn 3 4 V + < n dφ k, > π dξe ξ ωn e ehξ vfsin θ k L n α < n > + < n, > These equations ay be rewritten as F n α < n +, > ] F n α < n > 5 < n > α p n, =, 6 α ± nx ± n±b n x + n +x n +b nx + n+ x n+ =, 7 where x ± n was defined following Eq. in the text. We note that the expression for the polar state separates fro that for the two axial states, which coprise the PBS state for V V. In order to obtain the recursion relations for the PBS state, we begin by adding and subtracting both equations in Eq. 3. This leads to α + n x+ n +b nx + n+ = b nx n+ α n x n 8 α + n x+ n +b n x + n = α n x n b n x n, 9 where we can let n n in Eq 8 to obtain b n x + n +α+ n x+ n = b n x n α n x n 3 α + nx + n +b n x + n = α nx n b n x n 3 We now have two equations in the two unknowns x + n and x + n, resulting in x + n = x n x + n = x n δα + n α + nα + n b n δα + n + α + nα + n b n δb n x n α + nα + n b n 3 δb n x n + α + nα + n b n 33 Letting n n + in Eq. 33 and setting the two equations equal, we obtain = x n δα + n+ δα + n + α + + n+ α+ n b n α + nα + n b n + δb nx n+ α + + δb n x n n+ α+ n b n α + nα +, 34 n b n where δ = lnt c /T c, fro which we obtain the recursion relation where = a n,n+ x n+ +a n,nx n +a n,n x n, 35 a n,n+ = δb n α + c n, 36 n+ a n,n = δb n α + c n, 37 n a n,n = α n c n c n δc n +c n c n c n, 38 and b n c n = α + nα n+ b n We note that there was an unfortunate typo in the expression for c n in Ref.. The solution to the recursion relation can be shown to be a continued fraction equation involving the reduced field h and the reduced teperature t
6 a a a a a4a4 a =. 4 Solutions to this equation are obtained using standard nuerical techniques. It is iportant to note that the first order iteration differs fro the exact curve by less than %. It is therefore only necessary to consider the continued fraction up to the a ter, as the iteration thereafter converges very rapidly. We note that a very briefversionofthis workappeared previously 8]. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The authors are grateful to Prof. A. de Visser for providing the data of Huy et al.
