4 APPRENTICESHIPS CAREERS EVENT I LEFT SCHOOL IN 2012 AND STUDIED ENGLISH AT OXFORD. I SOMEHOW ENDED UP DOING INTERNSHIPS IN BANKING AND WEDDING PLANNING BEFORE WORKING IN AN ADMIN JOB AT A HOSPITAL FOR 9 MONTHS, BOOKING APPOINTMENTS. I ALSO LOVED JOURNALISM AS A STUDENT. RECENTLY I DECIDED TO TRAIN AS A TEACHER - AND NOW HERE I AM AT ST GREG'S, SHARING MY PASSION FOR MY FAVOURITE SUBJECT EVERY DAY! MISS BLOOM, ENGLISH success always comes when preparation meets opportunity SCIENCE OXFORD OPPORTUNITIES Before St Gregs My first real job was a Operational Support Supervisor in e NHS, where I had to manage e workload of 30 staff as well as deal wi external contractors. I had to ensure at patients arrived at clinic on time, operating eatres had e correct number of porters and at records and medication arrived at e correct wards in time. While at University I had to write a business plan for a new business, six mons later I left e NHS to be my own boss for 6 years of very hard but rewarding work running a driving school. Over e past 17 Years I have taught in a wide range of educational establishments from Secondary School s, Furer Education and Higher Education Colleges. While working in Higher Education I had work I produced published to support e work of a textbook. I travel 110 miles a day from home to St Greg s and back, because You re wor it! 5 As a teenager, I worked wi racehorses, and was a waitress in a country house hotel. My first full-time role was at e University of Oxford, as PA to e Directors of a European Research Centre, and running a Master's Course. I became Associate Editor at a Recycling Industry Magazine and Events Management Company, organising Trade Fairs in Paris, Barcelona and Dusseldorf, and travelling to do factory visits, interviews, and to report on Trade Fairs in e UK, Europe. Hong Kong, Mainland China and Australia. I had already started my own business, proofreading and preparing academic typescripts for publication, and I continued to work for e Magazine as a freelance. I joined St Gregory e Great in 2003, as PA to e Senior Management Team, and moved into e role of Data Manager soon after. 6 FOCUS ON: FORENSIC SCIENCE WHAT S ON The staff of forensic science laboratories work closely wi e police and oers to provide impartial, scientific evidence for use in courts of law. They analyse material at might, for example, link e scene of a crime, a victim or a weapon to a suspect. Forensic scientists are graduates; ere are also opportunities for support staff wi lower-level qualifications. They provide impartial evidence at may link a person to a crime scene, for example, but could help eliminate a suspect from an enquiry as well. Forensic scientists also work on civil cases, such as disputes relating to motor vehicle accidents or medical negligence. Forensic scientists, wi e support of eir assistants, perform chemical analyses rough microscopy, spectroscopy, radiography, chromatography and oer meods. Expanding areas of work include digital forensics; is involves e recovery and technical examination of information held on computers, networks, mobile phones etc. Forensic scientists generally specialise in a particular area of work. What it takes To work in forensic science, you need: to be able to ink independently and analytically to be an extremely accurate, meodical and careful worker (when handling evidence, any hint of contamination could have serious consequences) normal colour vision for some jobs to be able to work in a team good written and oral communication skills - senior scientists/reporting officers present evidence in court - eier as a written report or in person. Entry and training Entry is possible at different levels and training is mainly on e job, along wi more formal courses. There are opportunities for graduate scientists and for support staff. Exact job titles and entry requirements vary depending on e employer.
