(On the other hand, don't waste a lot of time on excess verbiage.) Do not spend too much time on any one problem. You are free to refer to anything that was demonstrated in the homework or handouts. 1. (5 points each, 20 points total). For each of the following, indicate whether the statement is true or false. If you think the statement is false, indicate how the statement could be corrected. NOTE: These are all pretty easy, but you could waste a great deal of time on some of them or make stupid mistakes if you don't happen to see what the easiest way to approach each problem is. a. One of the problems with using listwise deletion of missing data is that it can produce a correlation matrix that would be impossible with any complete set of data. Solution. False. This problem can occur with pairwise deletion of missing data, because each correlation can be based on a different and non-equivalent sample. b. SPSS produced the following computer printout. If =.05 and backwards stepwise regression is being used, then EDUC should be removed from the equation next. A sociologist believes that women are more religious than are men (where religiosity is measured on a scale that runs from a low of zero to a high of one hundred). In her sample of 300 subjects, when she regresses Religiosity (Y) on Gender (X, where 1 = Female, 0 = Male), she finds that b = 10, F = 25, the mean of Y is 50 and the mean of X is 0.5. Therefore, she should reject the null hypothesis. Solution. True. Recall that in a bivariate regression, T² = F. Since b is positive and F = 25, T = 5, which is highly significant. Note that if we did not know the sign of b, we wouldn't be able to answer the question, since the alternative hypothesis is one-tailed (i.e. a large F is not enough, the effect of gender must be in the predicted direction.) d. A researcher is interested in the relationship between Income (measured in dollars) and race (where 1 = White, 0 = NonWhite). Regression, Anova, and a T-Test are all possible means for addressing this issue.

2 Solution. True. You could regress income on the dummy variable for race. Or, you could do a one-way Anova or a T-Test where you broke down income by the two categories for race. If the IV had three or more categories, you could still use dummy variable regression or one-way Anova but not a T-test. 2. Short answer problems. (10 points each, 30 points total, up to 10 points extra credit) Answer three of the following. You will get up to five points extra credit for each additional problem you answer correctly. a. When Y is regressed on X1 and X2, r y1 =.6, r y2 =.7, TOL X1 =.75. Compute the semipartial and partial correlations. Solution. Recall that, when there are two IVs, TOL X1 = TOL X2 = 1 - r 12 ² ==> r 12 ² = 1 - TOL X1. Since TOL X1 =.75, r 12 ² =.25 and r 12 =.5 (or, it could conceivably equal -.5, but that would seem unlikely given the strong positive correlations each X has with Y). Now, it is simply a matter of plugging in the values into the appropriate formulas. Here is an SPSS printout (using an arbitrary sample size of 100, variable means of 0 and s.d.'s of 1.) Definitely not, because the negative correlation shows that women are actually less supportive of Perot, the exact opposite of what she predicted. 3. After his exciting come from behind win on the NAFTA vote, Bill Clinton wants to know where he stands with the American public. He has told his pollsters to go out and collect information on four key variables: Clinton Female Nafta Union Level of support for Bill Clinton, where 0 = strongly opposes and 100 = strongly supports. How many of the sample members supported NAFTA? How many belong to a union? Who supports Clinton more, men or women, and by how much? Did union members tend to support or oppose NAFTA? Why was FEMALE the first and only variable to enter into the forward stepwise regression? Solution. From the means, you can tell that 50% of the 30 sample members (15) supported NAFTA, and that 36.7% (11) are Union members. The regression b tells you women support Clinton more, by a margin of 21.4 points (or about 58.1 versus 36.7). The negative correlation between Nafta and Union shows that union members tended to oppose Nafta. FEMALE was the first variable to enter because it had the strongest correlation with Clinton. It was the only variable to enter because, once Female was in the equation, neither Union or Nafta could produce a statistically significant increase in R². (This result is deceptive, however, because, as we will see, while neither variable alone can produce a significant increase, the two variables together can.) (5 points) In the forward stepwise regression, only Female made it into the final model. Yet, in the backwards stepwise regression, all three variables made it. Why did the final models differ so much? Solution. This occurs because of suppression. While both Union and Nafta have positive direct effects on support for Clinton, they are negatively correlated with each other. This causes each variable to have a fairly weak correlation with Clinton. Hence, the two together have significant effects, but individually neither appears to have much of an impact. Thus, in a forwards regression, neither makes it in, and in a backwards regression neither makes it out. We will pursue the topic of suppression further in Research Methods class.
