16 SMILE Harvey Ball, the artist who created the SMILEY FACE, believed that each of us, as individuals, can make a difference in this world. A smile is a remarkable thing. Not only does smiling help to make others feel good, it is good for you too. Studies have shown that smiling on a regular basis can reduce stress, boost your mood, reduce blood pressure and improve your overall well-being. It can also make you appear more likeable and more competent to others. There s even evidence that smiling is linked to a longer life expectancy. One of the best things about a smile is that it s contagious. When you smile at someone, they tend to smile too. So by smiling, you are effectively passing all of its benefits to the other person. What a kind gift to give! SHARE THE SMILE! (A game for all) The object of the game is for players NOT to smile but it usually isn t that easy. All players sit in a circle where they are all able to see each other. One player is chosen to be SMILEY. This player can smile broadly and show the circle a wonderful or cheeky smile. All other players in the circle must NOT smile. SMILEY then wipes the smile from his/her face with his/her hand and throws the smile to another player in the circle who must catch the smile to become SMILEY and put the smile on his/her own face. The new SMILEY can use the smile to make others smirk, giggle, laugh or smile and then pass it on in the same manner. If other players smile they are out of the game and can be the adjudicators. SMILE COLLAGE Put out all sorts of magazines, catalogues or junk mail. Ask the children to cut out only pictures of people with SMILES and have them create a collage using the pictures. You can make one large class or group collage or individual ones. You could also make it into a contest by asking for the picture to be covered with the most smiles Lizard Learning Pty Ltd 1

27 On 25th April Australians and New Zealanders remember those men and women who have fought, died or suffered in all wars and conflicts. The term ANZAC was the name given to those who landed on the shores of Gallipoli in Turkey in the early morning of 25th April, 1915, during World War I. Many people participate in Dawn Services on this day. During the service a soldier sounds the bugle for the Last Post to commence a minute s silence. The Last Post, in military life, marks the end of the day and a final farewell. Rouse is sounded to mark the end of the silence. The 4th verse from the poem For The Fallen called The Ode is also read. Rosemary which grew on the hillsides of Gallipoli, is associated with ANZAC Day and is very popular in the wreaths that are laid on cenotaphs all over the country. The red poppy can also be used and worn to signify remembrance. The spirit of ANZAC recognises the qualities of courage, mateship and sacrifice which the soldiers showed at Gallipoli. Use a pencil, ruler and protractor to measure 9 equal sized pieces of pizza. HINT If there is 360 in a circle, how many degrees in one ninth of a circle? CHECK Cut out each of your 9 pieces of pizza and place them on top of each other. They should be all exactly the same size. Glue your pieces back together if you measured correctly.
