17 The Story that is Told About Haasts Bluff by Sabrina Kantawarra l.a long time ago there were many people living at Haasts Bluff. They speared kangaroos and ate them in the olden times. They brought kangaroo meat back home for their families. 2.In the olden days the people travelled by camels, donkeys and on horses. They would go out for a camp out and they would all return back to Haasts Bluff with lots of bush meat. 3.They d i d n 't know how to drink in the past. They only knew the sweet bush tucker like honeybag and honey ants. The young women would go out to gather bush raisins and goannas. Then they would return later in the afternoon. 4.A long time ago they didn't have lots of Europeans, they had just one European pastor at Haasts Bluff, the first missionary. The pastor made them have a "service" in the morning to hear Gods' Word. They didn't know about drink. The young girls worked for the pastor inside his house. They did the cleaning and also minded his daughter. 5.Other aboriginal people came and camped close by at the creek. The Missionary gave out rations to the aborigines when they ran out of food. Some people would go out bush for kangaroos, turkeys and emus; and hunt for wild dingoes and f oxes. When they killed them and skinned them they would bring the skins back home to sell for money. They did all this a very long time ago at Haasts Bluff. 6.Other people left Haasts Bluff and went to other places for good. They left their own families. They went south, north, west and some went east to be near the grog. Some of the Missionaries went to Ilypili to find some n e w people. When they found them they brought them to Haasts Bluff. There they settled down. 7.A long time ago they speared kangaroos with spears, before rifles. Now some people are using rifles and also drinking white m a n s grog, leaving all the aboriginal bush food. Now they are all forgetting about these things. This is a free translation of the Pintupi/ Luritja into English.
