17 EARLY CONTACT EXPERIENCES NEAR MT. LIEBIG. A long time ago a large group of Europeans came to Mt. Liebig (Yamu]=urrngu). They used to climb the mountain and they would give us rations. These people came via the north side of the range in peculiar motor cars and they camped at Mt. Yulampawurru. We stayed there with them and bought lollies from them in exchange for Mountain Devil lizards. Eventually these people moved away and so we shifted to Berry Springs (I yanytji, west of Haasts Bluff). Whilewe were at Iyanytji some other Europeans came along to swim in the waterhole. One man was looking at the Europeans swimming and was surprised that the water seemed shallow. He had known that the water was mostly deep but because the Europeans were not going under he concluded that it was shallow. This man jumped in but with disastrous results. He went under and stayed there. All that was visible was his hands splashing in the water in a frantic attempt to come to the surface. Another man, noticed the struggle and alerted everyone to what was happening. We managed to get to him and drag him to safety. Once on the bank we lifted him by his legs to drain out the water, but because he was s till sick we took him to the Europeans near by. They gave him some medicine and he revived. He was quite well after this and was to remain in good spirits.
