arxiv:ath/ v [ath.nt] 5 Jul 2003 A quantitative version of the Roth-Ridout theore Toohiro Yaada, , Faculty of Science, Kyoto University, Kitashirakawaoiwakecho, Sakyoku, Kyoto-City, Kyoto, Japan e-ail: ToohiroYaada@nperdos0.box.edia.kyoto-u.ac.jp April 6, 2008 Abstract We shall show that there is a effectively coputable upper bound of the heights of solutions for an inequality in Roth-Ridout s theore. Introduction Liouville proved in 844 that if ζ is an algebraic nuber of degree n 2, then there exists a constant A such that ζ h q > A q n for all rational nuber h q, where q and h are integers. The proof is given in, for exaple, Baker[]. Since then, ore precise results were proved. In 955, Roth[8] proved his celebrated theore on Diophantine approxiation and Ridout[7] obtained a p-adic generalization of Roth s result. Ridout s result is as follows: Let p,, p t be distinct pries. Suppose the equation a n x n + a n x n + + a 0 = 0, where n 2 has rational integer coefficients, and has a root ζ in a real field and a root ζ i in the p i -adic field for any i =,, t. Then, if κ > 2, the inequality in{, ζ h t q } in{, h qζ i pi } (ax{ h, q }) κ () i= has at ost a finite nuber of solutions in rational integers h, q with (h, q) =. Corvaja[2][3][4][5] and others proved soe results concerning upper bounds of
2 PRILIMINARY RESULTS 2 heights of such rational integers(see also, Schidt[9]). But these results are not copletely effective. Briefly speaking, these results are as follows: Let s,, s be such rational nubers and H i be the height of s i for i. Suppose > 0 and H i > c i for i, where 0 and c are effectively coputable constants depending on ζ and c i s are effectively coputable constants depending on a 0,, a n and H,, H i. Then H < C, where C is a effectively coputable constant depending on a 0,, a n and H,, H. Now ust be taken to be large and no upper bound for H is given. Thus these results are noneffective. It is well known that Gel fond-baker s ethod gives copletely effective results, but any result given by Gel fond-baker s ethod is far fro best-possible in view of the estiate for κ. The purpose of this paper is to prove a copletely quantitative version of Roth-Ridout s theore: Theore.. Let p, p t be distinct pries and f(x) = a n x n +a n x n + + a 0 be a polynoial of degree 2 and with integral coefficients of absolute values at ost A. Suppose the equation f(x) = 0 has a root ζ in a real field and a root ζ i in the p i -adic field for any i =,, t. Then, if κ > 2, the inequality () has at ost a finite nuber of solutions in rational integers h, q with (h, q) =, and the upper bound for h, q can be effectively coputed in ters of κ, n, A, p,, p t. One of ain ideas of Roth-Ridout s ethod lies in supposing there exist rational nubers h q, where h i and q i are rational integers with (h i, q i ) =, satisfying () with h = h i, q = q i and soe inequalities involving q i s and h i s and derive a contradiction. Our new idea lies in weakening the conditions for h q. In fact, we shall prove that there exists infinitely any rationals satisfying the new condition in Lea Priliinary Results Firstly, we define the index of polynoials and use soe results on it, following the work of Ridout[7]. Let P(x,, x ) be any polynoial in variables which does not vanish identically. Let α,, α be any real nubers, and r,, be any positive nubers. Expand P(α + y,, α + y ) = j =0 c(j,, j p ) j =0 Then the index θ of P at the point(α,, α ) relative to r,, is the sallest value of j i i= r i for all sets of nonnegative rational integers j,, j for which c(j,, j ) 0. Clearly, the index of the derived polynoial ( ) k ( ) k P(x,, x ) x x i= y ji i
2 PRILIMINARY RESULTS 3 is at least θ k i i= r i. We define R (B; r,, ) to be the set of non-zero polynoials R(x,, x ) of variables, of degree at ost r j in x j for j =,,, and with integral coefficients of absolute values at ost B, and define Θ (B; h q, r,, ) to be the upper bound of the index θ(r) of a polynoial R(x,, x n ) the point ( h q ), for all polynoials in the set R (B; r,, ). We will introduce Ridout s version of Lea 7 in Roth[8]. Lea 2.. Let be a positive integer and let δ be a positive real less than. Let r,, be positive rational integers satisfying and > 0δ, r j r j > δ for j = 2,,. Let q,, be positive integers satisfying and log q > δ (2 + ), r j log H j r log H, for j = 2,,, where H i = ax{ q i, h i } for i =,,. Then Θ (q δr ; q,, ; r,, ) < 0 δ ( 2 ). h h Next, we prove a copleentary result concerning Diophantine approxiation. Before doing it, we need a lea. Lea 2.2. Let b,, b t, Γ,, Γ t be positive real nubers such that t i= Γ i =. Then, for any positive nuber ǫ, there exist positive rational integers a,, a t such that a j b j t i= a Γ j < ǫ for j =,, t. ib i Proof. The lea is valid for t =. Indeed, then a jb j t i= aibi = = Γ. We assue that it is valid for t = n, and we proceed to prove the validity for t = n +. Let ǫ be a positive real nuber less than ǫ such that ǫ ( Γ n+ + + ǫ ) < ǫ, and Γ n+ ǫ ( Γ n+ + Γ n+ ǫ ) < ǫ. (2)
2 PRILIMINARY RESULTS 4 These siultaneous inequalities hold for sufficiently sall ǫ. By inductive assuption, there exist positive rational integers a,, a n a j b j Γ j n i= a ib i Γ n+ < ǫ for j =,, n. Write T = n i= a ib i for brevity. Since the above inequality holds with a i replaced by Ca i, where C is an arbitrary nonnegative rational integers, we can ake T arbitrarily large. Since ( + )b n+ b n+ = T( T + ( + )b n+ T + b n+ T + b n+ (+)b n+ T + ( + )b n+ ) b n+ T, we can choose a,, a n such that T+(+)b n+ bn+ T+b n+ < ǫ. Choosing such a,, a n, it is clear that there exists a positive rational integer a n+ such that a n+ b n+ n+ i= a Γ n+ ib i < ǫ. We have for j =,, n a j b j a j b n+ i= a = j n ib i i= a ( a n+b n+ ib n+ i i= a ) < ( Γ n+ + ǫ Γ j )( + ǫ ), ib i Γ n+ a and by (2), jb j n+ < Γ j +ǫ. In a siilar way, the lower estiate follows, and i= aibi the lea follows by induction. Lea 2.3. Let Γ,, Γ t be positive real nubers such that t i= Γ i =. Suppose that the congruence f(x) = 0 od p t has a solution for any i =,..., t. Then, for any positive nuber ǫ, there exists infinitely any pairs of rational integers q, h satisfying where H = ax{ q, h }. in{, qζ i h } pi H (2 ǫ)γi, for i =,, t, (3) Reark 2.4. We believe that (3) still holds with ǫ = 0. Clearly, it is true for t =. If this conjecture is true, it gives a p-adic generalization of Dirichlet s theore. But we cannot prove it. Lagarias[6] proves a copleentary theore: Set log H = log H and recursively set log i H = log(log i H)(i 2). Let f(h) = log i H( i t). Then there exist α 0, α,, α N and c 0 > 0 such that the inequality in{, qα 0 h } t i= in(, qα i h pi ) < c 0 H f(h), where H = ax{ q, h }, has infinitely any solutions. Proof. By Lea 2.2, there exists positive integers e,, e t such that e j log p j t i= e Γ i ǫ for j =,, t. i log p i 2
2 PRILIMINARY RESULTS 5 Let n be a positive rational integer and N = t i= pnei i. Let S be the set of pairs of integers (q, h) satisfying 0 q N and 0 h N. Then we have #S (N + ) 2 > N 2 = #(Z/N 2 Z). Now, by supposition, there exists an eleent in Z/N 2 Z such that a n ζ i od p 2ei i for all i =,, t by a well-known lea of Hensel. Thus the set S contains two distinct pairs of integers (q, h ) and (q 2, h 2 ) such that q h q 2 h 2 od N 2. Put q = a 0 (q q 2 ) and h = h h 2. Then H AN and qζ i h q h 0 od p 2ei i for all i =,, t. Thus we have, for sufficiently large n, since H < N 2 ǫ 2 2 ǫ the lea. qζ i h pi p 2ei i N (2 ǫ 2 )Γi H (2 ǫ)γi, for sufficiently large N and N goes to with n. This proves Next, we shall prove a odification of Lea 8 in Roth[8]. Lea 2.5. Let r 0,, be positive integers and a 0, a, κ, λ, λ be positive real nubers satisfying a < κ a 0 and κ a λ ( κ a ) λ. We define Then S (a 0, a, κ; r 0,, ) i 0 =#{(i 0, i,, i ) 0 i j r j, a 0 + a ( i + + i ) < κ ( λ)}. r 0 r 2 S (a 0, a, κ; r 0,, ) 2 2 λ (r 0 + )(r + ) ( + ). Proof. First we observe that = S (a 0, a, κ; r 0,, ) r 0 i 0=0 r 0 = i 0=0 #{(i,, i ) 0 i j r j, a ( i r + + i #{(i,, i ) 0 i j r j, i r + + i i 0 ) < κ 2 ( λ) a 0 } r 0 i 0 < { κ a 2 ( λ) a 0 }} r 0 (r 0 + )#{(i,, i ) 0 i j r j, i r + + i < κ 2a ( λ)}. Since κ 2a ( λ) = 2 { + ( κ a ) κ a λ} 2 ( λ )},
3 PROOF OF THE THEOREM 6 we have S (a 0, a, κ; r 0,, ) =(r 0 + )#{(i,, i ) 0 i j r j, i r + + i < 2 ( λ )}. Thus, by Lea 8 of Roth[8], we conclude that S (a 0, a, κ; r 0,, ) 2 2 λ (r 0 + )(r + ) ( + ). (4) This is the result which we wish to prove. 3 Proof of the Theore To prove the theore, it suffices to prove the following lea; indeed, provided that the Lea holds, the theore is derived following the proof of theore in Ridout[7]. Lea 3.. Let Γ 0, Γ,, Γ t be nonnegative real nubers satisfying t i=0 Γ i =. Then, if κ > 2, the t + siultaneous inequalities in{, ζ h q }, H κγ0 in{, qζ i h } pi H κγi,for i =,, t, (5) where H = ax{h, q}, have at ost finitely any solutions in integers h and q satisfying (h, q) = and the upper bound of H is effectively coputable in ters of κ, n, A, p,, p t, Γ 0,, Γ t. We suppose that there exist infinitely any solutions for the siultaneous inequalities (5) has infinitely any solutions and we shall derive a contradiction. Let be a positive rational integer which will be chosen later. Let h j, q j (j =,, ) denote rational integers and define H j to be ax{h j, q j }. 2+ Moreover, let ǫ be a positive nuber such that 2 (2 ǫ)( 2 ) Clearly, we can assue without loss of generality, Γ i > 0 for i =,..., t and therefore qζ i h pi < 0 has a solution for i =,..., t. Thus, by Lea 2.3, we can choose rational nubers h q siultaneous inequalies (3) for j =,,, h q = h such that h q = hj q j satisfies the satisfies (5), and H j+ > H 2δ j for j =,,. (6) We can assue, without loss of generality, that κ < We can choose δ so sall that the follolwing inequalities hold: 0 < δ < 2, (7)
3 PROOF OF THE THEOREM 7 and 0 δ (/2) + 2( + 3δn 2 <, (8) 2 δ 2 log q > log( + A) + 2 log( + α ). (9) Furtherore, we choose a positive rational integer sufficiently large to satisfy > 0δ (0) and put r log H r i = for i = 2,,, log H i () in{rj log H j j = 2,, } r =. log H (2) and we write r = (r + ) ( + ) for brevity. We observe that (7) and (6) iplies H > H 22 i fori =,,. (3) Hence we obtain fro () and (2) r log H r j log H j = log H j r log H r j log H j = log H j log H j > 2 log H, log H j log H log H j (4) for j = 2,,, and ( 2 2 ) r log H in{rj log H j j = 2,, } = log H log H in{r j log H j j = 2,, } log H log H log H ( 2 2 ) log H log H ( 2 ) log H. (5) Fro these inequalities, we deduce that r j /r j+ > ( 2 ) log H j+ log H j 2( 2 )δ > δ for j =,,. Define c i, a, λ, γ, η, B by (6) c i = r i log H i log H for i =,,, (7)
3 PROOF OF THE THEOREM 8 a = (2 ǫ)( 2 ), (8) λ = 8( + 3δ)n 2, (9) λ = κ a λ (κ ), (20) a γ = ( λ), (2) 2 η = 0 δ (/2), (22) Now (4) and (5) iply B = q δr. (23) and these iply c i (2 ǫ) (2 ǫ)( 2 ) = a for j =,,, H rj(2 ǫ) j H ar for j =,,. (24) Moreover, (8) iplies Since λ > 8 and κ a < η < γ. (25) 2+ 2 (2 ǫ)( 2 ) = < +, λ = λ + ( κ a )(λ ) > λ (κ ) λ 2 λ/2. (26) a Now we choose. For sufficiently large, we have > 8n 2, (27) For sufficiently sall δ we have 2 8n 2 < κ. (28) 8( + 3δ)n 2 2η > 0, (29) which is equivalent to 2( + 4δ) < κ, (30) 8( + 3δ)n 2 2η ( + 4δ) γ η < κ. (3)
3 PROOF OF THE THEOREM 9 Now we consider all of the polynoials W(x,, x ) = r s =0 s =0 c(s,, s )x s xs, where the coefficients c(s,, s ) assues independently all nonnegative integral values at ost B. We call such polynoials satisfy the B -property. The nuber of such polynoials is N = (B + ) r. We consider the derivatives W j,,j (x,, x ) = j! j! ( ) j ( ) j W x x for all integers j,, j with 0 j i r i for i =,, satisfying i= a j i r i + κ j κγ. (32) By Lea 2.5, the nuber D of such derivatives satisfies D 2 2 λ r. (33) Divide the polynoial W j,,j (x,, x) in a single variable x by f(x) and denote the reainder by T j,,j (W; x). The coefficients in each derived polynoial W j,,j (x,, x) have absolute values at ost 2 r+ +r B 2 r B B +δ by (9). We Observe that if W(x) is a polynoial of degree d > n and height at ost W, then W(x) w d x d n f(x) is a polynoial of degree at ost d and height at ost W(A+). Hence, by (9), T j,,j (W; x) has coefficients with absolute values at ost (A + ) s n+ B +2δ < B +3δ. Thus the nuber of distinct sets of D reainders is less than N; for the nuber is clearly less than ( + B +3δ ) nd and, by (26) and (33) the definition of λ we have nd( + 3δ) 2( + 3δ)n 2 λ r = 2 r, and therefore ( + B +3δ ) nd < (2 + 2B ) nd(+3δ) (2 + 2B ) r 2 < ( + B ) r = N. Hence there exists two distinct polynoials W and W 2 with the B -property such that, putting W = W 2 W, W j,,j (x,, x ) is divisible by f(x) for all j,, j satisfying (3). Hence the index of W at the point (ζ,, ζ) relative to r a,, r a, r κ is at least κγ. Furtherore, it is clear that W is a polynoial with integer coefficients of absolute values at ost B.
3 PROOF OF THE THEOREM 0 By Lea 2., the index of W at the point ( h q ) relative to r,, is less than η. Hence there exists soe derivative with k j j= r j Q(x,, x n ) = W k,,k (x,, x n ), < η, such that Q( h q ) does not vanish. Fro a trivial estiate i= a k i r i + κ k κ j= k j r j κγ, we deduce that if i= a ji r i + κ j κ(γ η), then Q j,,j (ζ,, ζ) = 0. (34) Since the coefficients in each derived polynoial Q j,,j (x,, x ) = Wk + j,, k + j (x,, x ) have absolute values at ost B +2δ, we obtain fro (9) and (6) Q i,,i (ζ,, ζ) < B +2δ ( + ζ ) r+ +r B +2δ ( + ζ ) r B +3δ. (35) Fro the Taylor expansion of Q on the point (ζ,, ζ), we obtain Q( h q,, h ) = r i =0 i =0 Q i,,i (ζ,, ζ) Now we consider a rational integer Q = i= qri i write for brevity, I = j= a ij r j + κ i. We note that, by (24), ( h j ζ) ij. (36) q j j= Q( h q ). First we H κi j= H (2 ǫ)ij j H (κi+ar i j j= r ) j H Ir. (37) Now, if Γ 0 0, then we have for any i,..., i r such that Q i,...,i r (ζ,..., ζ) does not vanish, h j i j ζ q j j= H κγ0i H IrΓ0 j= H rγ0κ(γ η) H (2 ǫ)γ0ij j
3 PROOF OF THE THEOREM by (35), (36) and (37). Hence we have Q i= q ri i rb+3δ H r{+κγ0(γ η)} B +4δ H r{+κγ0(γ η)}. Moreover, by the definition of B in (23), we have B +4δ q rδ(+4δ) H rδ(+4δ). Thus we obtain Q H r{+δ(+4δ) κγ0(γ η)}. (38) If Γ 0 = 0, then we have Q rb +δ H rj j B +2δ H r H r(+δ{+2δ)}. j= Therefore, we conclude that (38) holds whether Γ 0 = 0 or not. Next, we estiate Q ps for s =,..., t. We have for any i,..., i r such that Q i,...,i r (ζ,..., ζ) does not vanish, h j i j ζ s q j j= H κγsi H IrΓs j= p s H rγsκ(γ η) H (2 ǫ)γsij j by (35), (36) and (37). Now, observing that Q i,,i r (ζ s,, ζ s ) ps ax{, ζ s r+ +r p s }, we have Q ps ax{, ζ s r+ +r p s }H rγsκ(γ η) a n r+ +r p s a n r p s ax{h riγt } H rκγt(γ η). Since t s=0 Γ s = and, for any integer N, N t s= N p s by a wellknown property of p-adic valuation, we obtain H r{+δ(+4δ) κ(γ η)} a n r. Now a n r A r rδ2 H rδ2 by virtue of the estiate obtained fro (9), () and (2). Thus we conclude ( + δ) + δ( + 4δ) κ(γ η) 0 which iplies, since γ > η, κ < (+δ)+δ(+4δ) γ η. But this contradicts to (3). This copletes the proof.
