SOME PROPERTIES OF THE PSEUDO-SMARANDACHE FUNCTION arxiv:ath/05048v [ath.nt] 6 Apr 005 RICHARD PINCH Abstract. Charles Ashbacher [] has posed a nuber of questions relating to the pseudo-sarandache function Z(n). In this note we show that the ratio of consecutive values Z(n + )/Z(n) and Z(n )/Z(n) are unbounded; that Z(n)/Z(n) is unbounded; that n/z(n) takes every integer value infinitely often; and that the series n /Z(n)α is convergent for any α >.. Introduction We define the -th triangular nuber T() = (+). Kashihara [] has defined the pseudo-sarandache function Z(n) by Z(n) = in{ : n T()}. Charles Ashbacher [] has posed a nuber of questions relating to the pseudo- Sarandache function Z(n). In this note we show that the ratio of consecutive values Z(n)/Z(n ) and Z(n)/Z(n + ) are unbounded; that Z(n)/Z(n) is unbounded; and that n/z(n) takes every integer value infinitely often. He notes that the series n /Z(n)α is divergent for α = and asks whether it is convergent for α =. He further suggests that the least value of α for which the series converges ay never be known. We resolve this proble by showing that the series converges for all α >.. Soe properties of the pseudo-sarandache function We record soe eleentary properties of the function Z. Lea. () If n T() then Z(n). Z(T()) =. () For all n we have n < Z(n). (3) Z(n) n, and if n is odd then Z(n) n. (4) If p is an odd prie dividing n then Z(n) p. (5) Z( k ) = k+. (6) If p is an odd prie then Z(p k ) = p k and Z(p k ) = p k or p k according as p k or 3 od 4. We shall ake use of Dirichlet s Theore on pries in arithetic progression in the following for. Lea. Let a, b be coprie integers. Then the arithetic progression a + bt is prie for infinitely any values of t. Date: April Matheatics Subject Classification. Priary A5; Secondary B83.
RICHARD PINCH 3. Successive values of the pseudo-sarandache function Using properties (3) and (5), Ashbacher observed that Z( k ) Z( k ) > k and so the difference between the conecutive values of Z is unbounded. He asks about the ratio of consecutive values. Theore. For any given L > 0 there are infinitely any values of n such that Z(n + )/Z(n) > L, and there are infinitely any values of n such that Z(n )/Z(n) > L. Proof. Choose k 3 od 4, so that T(k) is even and k divides T(k). We consider the conditions k and (k + ) ( + ). These are satisfied if k od k(k+), that is, = k+k(k+)t for soe t. We have (+) = k( + (k + )t) (k + )( + kt), so that if n = k(k + )( + kt)/ we have n T(). Now consider n + = T(k) + + kt(k)t. We have k T(k), so T(k) + is coprie to both k and T(k). Thus the arithetic progression T(k) + + kt(k)t has initial ter coprie to its increent and by Dirichlet s Theore contains infinitely any pries. We find that there are thus infinitely any values of t for which n + is prie and so Z(n) = k + k(k + )t and Z(n + ) = n = T(k)( + kt). Hence Z(n + ) Z(n) n = T(k) + kt(k)t k + T(k)t > k 3. A siilar arguent holds if we consider the arithetic progression T(k) + kt(k)t. We then find infinitely any values of t for which n is prie and Z(n ) Z(n) n The Theore follows by taking k > 4L. T(k) + kt(k)t = > k k + T(k)t 4. We note that this Theore, cobined with Lea (), gives another proof of the result that the difference of consecutive values is unbounded. 4. Divisibility of the pseudo-sarandache function Theore. For any integer k, the equation n/z(n) = k has infinitely any solutions n. Proof. Fix an integer k. Let p be a prie od k and put p+ = kt. Put n = T(p)/t = p(p + )/t = pk. Then n T(p) so that Z(n) p. We have p n, so Z(n) p : that is, Z(n) ust be either p or p. Suppose, if possible, that it is the latter. In this case we have n p(p+) and n (p )p, so n divides p(p + ) (p )p = p: but this is ipossible since k > and so n > p. We conclude that Z(n) = p and n/z(n) = k as required. Further, for any given value of k there are infinitely any prie values of p satisfying the congruence condition and hence infinitely any values of n = T(p) such z/z(n) = k.
SOME PROPERTIES OF THE PSEUDO-SMARANDACHE FUNCTION 3 5. Another divisibility question Theore 3. The ratio Z(n)/Z(n) is not bounded above. Proof. Fix an integer k. Let p od k be prie and put n = T(p). Then Z(n) = p. Consider Z(n) =. We have k p p(p + ) = n and this divides (+)/. We have ǫ od p and δ od k+ where each of ǫ,δ can be either 0 or. Let = pt + ǫ. Then ǫ t δ od k : that is, t ǫ δ od k. This iplies that either t = or t k. Now if t = then p and T() T(p) = n, which is ipossible since n T(). Hence t k. Since Z(n)/Z(n) = /p > t/, we see that the ratio Z(n)/Z(n) can be ade as large as desired. 6. Convergence of a series Ashbacher observes that the series n /Z(n)α diverges for α = and asks whether it converges for α =. In this section we prove convergence for all α >. Lea 3. (log n) 0.57 log n = = + log n; (log n) for n 4. Proof. For the first part, we have / /t /( ) for t [,]. Integrating, t dt. Suing, n t dt, that is, n + log n and log n. The result follows. For the second part, we siilarly have / log t/t log( )/( ) for t [,] when 4, since log x/x is onotonic decreasing for x > e. Integrating, Suing, 4 n 3 log t dt t log t dt t log( ). 4 log( ),
4 RICHARD PINCH that is, log log 3 3 (log n) (log 3) We approxiate the nuerical values and to obtain the result. log log + log 3 3 log n n log. (log 3) < 0.0 (log 3) > Lea 4. Let d() be the function which counts the divisors of. For n we have d()/ < 7(log n). = Proof. We verify the assertion nuerically for n 6. Now assue that n 8 > e. We have d() = = de = = de= d n de n = d e ( + log(n/d)) d d n d n e<n/d ( + log n) (log n) =.57 + log n + (log n) < 4 ( ) log n ( ) log n + log n + (log n) 3 < (log n). Lea 5. Fix an integer t 5. Let e t > Y > e (t )/. The nuber of integers n with e t < n e t such that Z(n) Y is at ost 96Y t. Proof. Consider such an n with = Z(n) Y. Now n ( + ), say k n = and k n = +, with n = n n. Thus k = k k = ( + )/n and k n Y. The value of k is bounded below by and above by ( + )/n Y /e t = K, say. Given a pair (k,k ), the possible values of n are bounded above by Y/k and ust satisfy the congruence condition k n + 0 odulo k : there are therefore at ost Y/k k + such values.
SOME PROPERTIES OF THE PSEUDO-SMARANDACHE FUNCTION 5 Since Y/k Y/K = e t /Y > /e, we have Y/k + < (e + )Y/k < 7Y/k. Given values for k,k and n, the value of n is fixed as n = (k n + )/k. There are thus at ost k K d(k) possible pairs (k,k ) and hence at ost k K 7Y d(k)/k possible quadruples (k,k,n,n ). We have K > so that the previous Lea applies and we can deduce that the nuber of values of n satisfying the given conditions is at ost 49Y (log K). Now K = Y /e t < e t+ so log K < t + + log < t. This establishes the claied upper bound of 96Y t. Theore 4. Fix < β < and an integer t 5. The nuber of integers n with e t < n e t such that Z(n) < n β is at ost 96t e βt. Proof. We apply the previous result with Y = e βt. The conditions of β ensure that the previous lea is applicable and the upper bound on the nuber of such n is 96e βt t as claied. Theore 5. The series is convergent for any α >. n= Z(n) α Proof. We note that if α > then /Z(n) α < /n α/ and the series is convergent. So we ay assue < α. Fix β with /α < β < α/. We have < β < < α/. We split the positive integers n > e 4 into two classes A and B. We let class A be the union of the A t where, for positive integer t 5 we put into class A t those integers n such that e t < n e t for integer t and Z(n) n β. All values of n with Z(n) > n β we put into class B. We consider the su of /Z(n) α over each of the two classes. Since all ters are positive, it is sufficient to prove that each series separately is convergent. Firstly we observe that for n B, we have /Z(n) α < /n αβ and since αβ > the series sued over the class B is convergent. Consider the eleents n of A t : so for such n we have e t < n e t and Z(n) < n β. By the previous result, the nuber of values of n satisfying these conditions is at ost 96t e βt. For n A t, we have Z(n) n, so /Z(n) α /n α/ < /e α(t )/. Hence the su of the subseries n A t /Z(n) α is at ost 96e α/ t e (β α/)t. Since β < α/ for α >, the su over all t of these ters is finite. We conclude that n= /Z(n)α is convergent for α > Theore 6. The series is convergent for any α >. n= Z(n) α Proof. We fix β 0 = > β > > β r = with β j < αβ j+ for 0 j r. We define a partition of the integers e t < n < e t into classes B t and C t (j), j r. Into B t place those n with Z(n) > n β. Into C t (j) place those n
6 RICHARD PINCH with n β j+ < Z(n) < n β j. Since β r = we see that every n with et < n < e t is placed into one of the classes. The nuber of eleents in C t (j) is at ost 96t e βjt and so Z(n) α < 96t e βjt e βj+α(t ) = 96e βj+α t e (β j αβ j+ )t. n C t(j) For each j we have β j < αβ j+ so each su over t converges. The su over the union of the B t is bounded above by n αβ, n which is convergent since αβ > β 0 =. We conclude that n= /Z(n)α is convergent.
