ON STRONGER CONJECTURES THAT IMPLY THE ERDŐS-MOSER CONJECTURE BERND C. KELLNER arxiv: v2 [ath.nt] 5 Sep 2012 Abstract. The Erdős-Moser conjecture states that the Diophantine equation S k () = k, where S k () = 1 k +2 k + +( 1) k, has no solution for positive integers k and with k 2. We show that stronger conjectures about consecutive values of the function S k, that see to be ore naturally, iply the Erdős-Moser conjecture. 1. Introduction Let k and be positive integers throughout this paper. Define S k () = 1 k +2 k + +( 1) k. Conjecture 1 (Erdős-Moser). The Diophantine equation S k () = k (1) has only the trivial solution (k,) = (1,3) for positive integers k,. In 1953 Moser [7] showed that if a solution of (1) exists for k 2, then k ust be even and > Recently, this bound has been greatly increased to > by Gallot, Moree, and Zudilin [2]. So it is widely believed that non-trivial solutions do not exist. Coparing S k with the integral x k dx, see [2], one gets an easy estiate that k < < 2k. (2) A general result of the author [5, Prop. 8.5, p. 436] states that r+1 S k () r B k (3) for r = 1,2 and even k, where B k denotes the k-th Bernoulli nuber. Thus a non-trivial solution (k,) of (1) has the property that 2 ust divide the nuerator of B k for k 4; this result concerning (1) was also shown in [6] in a different for. Because the Erdős-Moser equation is very special, one can consider properties of consecutive values of the function S k in general. This leads to two stronger conjectures, described in the next sections, that iply the conjecture of Erdős-Moser Matheatics Subject Classification. 11B83 (Priary) 11A05, 11B68 (Secondary). 2 2 BERND C. KELLNER 2. Preliinaries Weusethefollowingnotation. Wewritep r whenp r butp r+1, i.e., r = ord p where p always denotes a prie. Next we recall soe properties of the Bernoulli nubers and the function S k. The Bernoulli nubers B n are defined by z e z 1 = z n B n, z < 2π. n! n=0 These nubers are rational where B n = 0 for odd n > 1 and ( 1) n 2 +1 B n > 0 for even n > 0. A table of the Bernoulli nubers up to index 20 are given in [5, p. 437]. The denoinator of B n for even n is described by the von Staudt-Clausen theore, see [4, p. 233], that deno(b n ) = p. (4) ThefunctionS k iscloselyrelatedtothebernoullinubersandisgivenbythewell-known forula, cf. [4, p. 234]: k ( k S k () = )B ν+1 k ν ν ν +1. (5) ν=0 p 1 n 3. Stronger conjecture Part I The strictly increasing function S k is a polynoial of degree k+1 as a result of (5). One ay not expect that consecutive values of S k have highly coon prie factors, such that S k (+1)/S k () is an integer for sufficiently large. Conjecture 2. Let k, be positive integers with 3. Then S k (+1) S k () N (k,) {(1,3),(3,3)}. (6) Note that we have to require 3, since S k (1) = 0 and S k (2) = 1 for all k 1. Due to the well-known identity S 1 () 2 = S 3 (), a solution for k = 1 iplies a solution for k = 3. Hereby we have the only known solutions = 2 and = 4 (7) based on soe coputer search. Since S k (+1)/S k () 1 as, it is clear that we can only have a finite nuber of solutions for a fixed k. By S k (+1) = S k ()+ k, one easily observes that (6) is equivalent to as k () = k (a,k,) {(1,1,3),(3,3,3)}, where a is a positive integer. This gives a generalization of (1). Proposition 1. Conjecture 2 iplies Conjecture 1.
ON STRONGER CONJECTURES THAT IMPLY THE ERDŐS-MOSER CONJECTURE 3 Proof. Eq. (1) can be rewritten as 2S k () = S k (+1) after adding S k () on both sides. Conjecture 2 states that S k ( + 1)/S k () is not a positive integer except for the cases (k,) = (1,3) and (k,) = (3,3) as given in (7). This iplies Conjecture 1, which predicts S k (+1)/S k () 2 for k Stronger conjecture Part II Theconnectionbetween thefunctions k andthebernoulli nubers leadstothefollowing theore, which we will prove later. In the following we always write B k = N k /D k in lowest ters with D k > 0 for even k. For now we write (a,b) for gcd(a,b). Theore 1. Let k, be positive integers with even k. Define Then g k () = (S k(),s k (+1)). in 1 g k() = 1 D k and ax 1 g k() N k. Generally g k () = 1 (D k N k,) = 1 and special values are given by More generally, g k (D k ) = 1 D k, g k ( N k ) = N k, and g k (D k N k ) = B k. In particular if N k is square-free, then g k () = N k, if (D k,) = 1 and N k. g k () = (N k,) (D k,) and ax 1 g k() = N k. Reark 1. It is well-known that N k = 1 exactly for k {2,4,6,8}. Known indices k, where N k is prie, are recorded as sequence A in [8]: 10,12,14,16,18,36,42. Sequence A in [8] gives the indices k, where N k is not square-free: 50, 98, 150, 196, 228,.... By this, all N k are square-free for 2 k 48. Since S k (+1) = S k ()+ k, we have (S k (),S k (+1)) = (S k (), k ), (8) giving a connection with (1). The function g k heavily depends on the Bernoulli nuber B k. For 2 k 48 and soe higher indices k we even have in g k() ax g k() = B k. 1 1 Theprobleistofindanaccurateupperboundofg k tosolve(1). Thisrelationisdeonstrated by Theore 2 below and we raise the following conjecture based on Theore 1 and soe coputations.
4 BERND C. KELLNER Conjecture 3. The function g k has an upper bound as given in Theore 2. Theore 2. Let k,,r be positive integers with even k 10. If ax 1 g k() < N k log r N k for k C r and (1) has no solution for k < C r, where C r is an effectively coputable constant, then Conjecture 1 is true. In particular, one can choose C r = 10 for r = 1,...,6. Proof. Considering Theore 1 and (8), a possible solution of (1) ust trivially satisfy k = (S k (), k ) = g k (). (9) For k = 2,4,6,8 there is no solution of (1), since N k = 1. Now let k 10. Using the relation of B k to the Rieann zeta function by Euler s forula, cf. [4, p. 231], we have k! B k = 2ζ(k) (2π) k. Since ζ(s) 1 onotonically as s and ζ(2) = π 2 /6, we obtain N k < π2 3 k! (2π) kd k < 2π2 k! 3 π k, using the fact that D k 2(2 k 1), see [1]. Stirling s series of the Gaa function, cf. [3, p. 481], states that k! < 2πkk k e k+1/12k. Since e 1/12k < 11, we deduce that 10 ( ) k 1 N k < ηk 3 k 2 with η = 11 π 2π eπ 15 e Further we conclude that log N k < klog(k/π). Finally, we achieve that ( ) k 1 k N k log r N k < f r (k) (10) eπ with f r (k) = ηk 3 2 +r log r (k/π). For a fixed r we have k 1 f r (k) 1 as k. Define { k 1 I(r) = in n 10 : } f r (k) < eπ for all k n, which is an increasing function depending on r. A short coputation shows that I(r) = 10 for r = 1,...,6. We set C r = I(r). Consequently (10) turns into k 1 N k log r N k < k for k C r. (11) Now, we assue that (1) has no solution for k < C r and that ax g k() < N k log r N k for k C r. (12) 1 According to (9), (11), and (12), we then achieve that < k for k C r, which contradicts (2). Thus there is no solution of (1) for all k 2 iplying Conjecture 1.
ON STRONGER CONJECTURES THAT IMPLY THE ERDŐS-MOSER CONJECTURE 5 To prove Theore 1, we shall need soe preparations and a refineent of (3). Theore 3. Let k, be positive integers where k is even and 2. Then More precisely for p r : S k () B k (od ), if k 2, S k () B k (od 2 ), if k 4 and (D k,) = 1, S k () B k (od 3 ), if k 6 and N k. S k () B k (od p 2r ), if k 4 and p D k, S k () B k (od p 3r ), if k 6 and p N k. Proof. This follows by exploiting the proof of [5, Prop. 8.5, pp ]. Lea 1. Let a,b be positive integers. The sequence {(a,b ν )} ν 1 is increasing and eventually constant. If (a,b r ) = (a,b r+1 ) for soe r 1, then {(a,b ν )} ν r is constant. Especially if ord p a sord p b, then ord p (a,b ν ) = ord p a for ν s. Proof. If (a,b) = 1, then (a,b ν ) = 1 for ν 1. Assue that (a,b) > 1. For each p (a,b), we have ord p (a,b ν ) = in{ord p a,νord p b}, which is increasing and bounded as ν. It follows that if ord p a sord p b, then ord p (a,b ν ) = ord p a for ν s. Considering all pries p (a,b), we deduce that (a,b r ) = (a,b r+1 ) for soe r 1 iplies that (a,b ν ) is constant for ν r. Proposition 2. Let k, be positive integers with even k. Then (S k (),) = (D k,) and in g k() = 1. 1 D k Proof. Let > 1, since the case = 1 is trivial. By Theore 3 we have S k () N k D k (od ). For each prie power p ep, we then infer that p ep S k (), if p D k ; otherwise p ep 1 S k (), since D k is square-free due to (4). This gives the first equation above. Using Lea 1 and (8), we deduce the relation g k () = (S k(), k ) (S k(),) = 1 (D k,). If = D k, then we even have that (S k (), ν ) = 1 for ν 1, giving the iniu with g k () = 1/D k. Proposition 3. Let k, be positive integers with even k. Then (S k (), 2 ) = (N k,) (D k,).
6 BERND C. KELLNER Proof. The case k = 2 follows by (5), B 2 = 1, and (( 1)(2 1),) = 1. Now let 6 k 4, 2, and assue that (D k,) = 1. Applying Theore 3 for this case we then have S k () N k D k (od 2 ). (13) Thus we deduce that (S k (), 2 ) = (N k,). Now let be arbitrary. Using Proposition 2 we obtain the relation (S k (), 2 ) = c k, (S k (),) = c k, (D k,) with soe integer c k, 1. Since (N k,d k ) = 1, those factors of (N k,) can only give a contribution to the factor c k, ; while other factors of are reduced by (D k,). To be ore precise, consider a prie p where p r : If p D k, then ord p (S k (), ν ) = r 1 for ν 1 by Proposition 2 and Lea 1. Otherwise p D k and (13) reains valid (od p 2r ) by Theore 3. Hence c k, = (N k,), which yields the result. Proposition 4. Let k, be positive integers with even k. Then (S k (), 3 ) = (N k, 2 ) (D k,). Proof. The cases k = 2,4,6,8 are copatible with Proposition 3, since N k = 1. Now let k 10, 2, and assue that N k. Using Theore 3 we have for this case that S k () N k D k (od 3 ). (14) This shows that (S k (), 3 ) = (N k, 2 ). Now let be arbitrary. With Proposition 3 we obtain the relation (S k (), 3 ) = d k, (S k (), 2 ) = d k, (N k,) (D k,) with soe integer d k, 1. Consider a prie p where p r : If p N k, then ord p (S k (), ν ) r, ν 1, using Propositions 2 and 3 and Lea 1. Thus p gives no contribution to d k,. If p N k, then (13) and (14) reain valid (od p 2r ) and (od p 3r ) by Theore 3, respectively. So a power of p gives a contribution to d k,. Counting the prie powers, which fulfill both (13) and (14), we then finally deduce that d k, = (N k, 2 )/(N k,). Corollary 1. Let k, be positive integers with even k. Then (S k (), k ) = e k, (S k (), 3 ), where e k, is a positive integer with the property that p e k, iplies that p N k. Proof. As in the proof of Proposition 4, we can use the sae arguents. A prie p with p N k cannot give a contribution to e k, anyore.
ON STRONGER CONJECTURES THAT IMPLY THE ERDŐS-MOSER CONJECTURE 7 Proof of Theore 1. The iniu of g k is shown by Proposition 2. As a consequence of Proposition 4 and Corollary 1, it follows for arbitrary that g k () = 1 if and only if (D k N k,) = 1. Cobining Propositions 2 4 we have achieved that (S k (), ν ) = (N k, ν 1 ), ν = 1,2,3. (15) (D k,) The values of g k () for = D k, N k,d k N k follow easily by (15) using Lea 1, since (S k (), ν ) is constant for ν 2 in these cases. If (D k,) = 1 and N k, then g k () = N k by the sae arguents, which iplies that ax g k() N k. (16) 1 It reains the case where N k is square-free. By (15) and Lea 1 we conclude that (S k (), ν ) is constant for ν 2 for arbitrary. Thus g k () = (N k,)/(d k,) in this case. Consequently (16) holds with equality.
