National Engineers Week is fast approaching. There are quite a few events occurring throughout Anchorage next week. If you are interested in attending or volunteering for these activities, please review the announcement included in this newsletter for more information about whom to contact regarding these opportunities. These events include school presentations, student competitions, and student tours. I know that presenting in class rooms and leading tours doesn t always come second nature to many engineers (myself included), but I ve found that the more I expose myself to these opportunities the easier and more impactful they become for both myself and others involved. A quote from Muhammad Ali comes to mind: Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth. I hope to see some of you out at these events! Mak Kampen, President Matthew.Kampen@conocophillips.com Craig Rohwer, President-Elect Craig.Rohwer@irco.com Nathan Zeigler, Secretary Nathan.Zeigler@contractor.conocophillips.com Tracy McKeon, Treasurer tmckeon@crweng.com Ruth Armstrong, Grassroots Gov. Advocacy rarmstrong@ak.net Doug Franklin, Membership dfranklin@stinebaugh.com Brian Johnson, Student Activities / YEA rbjohnson13@gmail.com This month s program should prove to be interesting to the masses. Jim McKillip with Desert Aire will be here to present on Understanding HVAC & Plant Dynamics in Grow Room Applications. From what I understand, these facilities can be extremely technical from an HVAC/humidification standpoint (and large electrical footprint). With the new acceptance of such facilities within the State, this information may prove to be useful for upcoming work opportunities within our industry. Best Regards, Mak Kampen, P.E. Jim has been an HVAC manufacturer, consulting mechanical engineer, and an HVAC manufacturer s representative. Now, he leads Desert Aire s effort in the western US and western Canada in providing a dehumidification, heating and cooling system engineered specifically for controlled environment agriculture and, in particular, cannabis facilities. Jim will be discussing the following topic: The topic of Jim s discussion will be Understanding HVAC & Plant Dynamics in Grow Room Applications. Jim s presentation will include a basic description of plant physiology and will show why the typical HVAC design for grow rooms is not working as designed. He will discuss the various alternatives for maintaining the crucial temperature and humidity control that is vital for proper plant growth and maximizing yield. We hope to see you there!
3 H o t G a s B y p a s s Page 3 M e m b e r s h i p R e p o r t : ASHRAE Members, We would like to reach out and remind you of the benefits of being a member of your local ASHRAE Chapter. Your membership in the Alaska Chapter helps support our local efforts in keeping you informed of local activities through newsletters, seminars, and meetings regarding up-to-date programs, speakers and the latest technology in the area. Positive aspects of local involvement are being able to network with other industry professionals, and maintaining your professional education by earning Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or Professional Development Hours (PDHs). By being involved, you ll be a stronger contributor on the job and enhance your chances for career growth. In recent months it has come to the attention of the Board of Governors that many ASHRAE Society members assigned to our Alaska Chapter are not current on their chapter dues. Alaska Chapter makes every effort to keep the cost of chapter dues fair and reasonable. Chapter dues are necessary to meet the current operating expenses of the Chapter. Your local dues are only $50.00 per year and can be paid at the same time you pay your Society dues. Due to increased operating costs, the Alaska Chapter Board of Governors has made the difficult decision to stop distribution of any local announcements (i.e. the Chapter Newsletter, s, and mailings, etc.) to those members who are not current on their chapter dues. We are encouraging our members to check the status of their memberships and if you find that you have not paid your dues, you can go to the ASHRAE website and pay your dues online at Thank you!
