2 A Letter From Our President September 2018 Dear Colleagues, Although we have had relatively few school days this September, it seems as if summer happened long ago. I hope you had time to spend with family and friends and not think about school. But reality intrudes, and we are back in the swing of things. I wanted to introduce myself to you as the new president of NYCESPA. I am Olivia Francis-Webber, proud principal of PS 114 in District 9, the Bronx. First, let me express my appreciation to my predecessor, Liza Caraballo Suarez for her nearly 4 years of visionary leadership. I am taking over an association that is committed to fostering the professional growth of elementary and K-8 principals. I look forward to greeting many of you at our annual Welcome Back Professional Development evening on Thursday, September 27 at Russo s on the Bay in Howard Beach, Queens. At our first Executive Board meeting of the school year, we continued the work of small groups brainstorming ideas to make NYCESPA an even better organization. You ll be hearing more about these exciting developments as we go forward. Stay tuned! In the meantime, make certain you have marked your calendars for the 86th Annual NYCESPA Convention that will be held Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the Brooklyn Marriott. Vice President Elizabeth Jarrett and her team are working hard to deliver another super day of professional learning and networking. Make sure you have set aside funds for members of your school leadership team to attend this premier educational event. On a personal note, I know that we as principals are so committed to the children, parents and staff of our schools that we often neglect our own well-being. I found myself falling into this trap and over the summer I resolved to make changes to my lifestyle and diet that have made me a more effective principal. I urge you to take care of yourself as they say on pre-flight briefing, Put on our mask before helping others. Well, the same caution applies to our lives on the ground. We can t take care of others if we are unable to take care of ourselves. Have a super-productive school year and I look forward to seeing you on September 27 at our Welcome Back dinner. There s a reservation form elsewhere in this Newsletter. Sincerely, Olivia N Y C E S P A N E W S L E T T E R S E P T E M B E R P A G E 2

National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) Completion in Orlando, FL came away enriched by three days of intensive professional learning, others claimed that the pre-conference day of community service building a playground at the Catalina Elementary School in Orlando was the real highlight of the event. On Sunday July 8, more than 100 principals from around the country braved the hot Florida sun to construct a playground and beautify the school grounds. The team of principals were treated to breakfast sponsored by No Kid Hungry, and to snacks and lunch provided by the staff and families of Catalina Elementary School. The school s Step Team entertained the volunteers at lunchtime. Seth Daub, principal of the school joined parents and students in thanking the volunteers for their willingness to help a school in need. NYCESPA NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2018 PAGE 3

5 NAESP News NYCESPA is the New York City counterpart of the National Association of Elementary School Principals. (NAESP) Here is one of the latest from our national association: Timing Matters Daniel Pink explains how principals can use the science of timing to set up students for success. The latest edition of NAESP Radio is available on the NAESP website. In Timing Matters: Making Better, Smarter, and Shrewder Decisions, NAESP Executive Director and NAESP Radio host L. Earl Franks, Ed.D., CAE, talks with Daniel Pink about how principals can use study results to be more deliberate with their scheduling and set up students for success. Studies show students cognitive abilities change throughout the day. For example, one study in the Los Angeles school system shows that students who study math earlier in the day have better grades and perform better on standardized tests than those who have math class later in the day. Another survey, in Denmark, shows a similar pattern: Students who take standardized tests in the morning score higher than those who take them in the afternoon. Knowing this, what can principals do to better set up students for success? Pink suggests they schedule analytical subjects earlier in the day. And when that s not possible because it s not always possible providing students with 20-minute breaks in the afternoon before they take tests helps them achieve higher scores. Visit naesp.org/radio to listen to the full interview for more ideas. Members in the News NYCESPA is proud to have a National Association of Elementary School Principals Director among their officers. Immediate Past President, Dr. Liza Caraballo-Suarez began her term as Director at Large, Minority Level in August. This is a first for New York City Principals, and NYCESPA looks forward to supporting her work. Education Update honored two NYCESPA members at its Outstanding Educators of the Year awards in June.
