Belmont paces the A-Sun with 23 wins, while USC Upstate, Stetson, Mercer and North Florida each have 20 or more. Big Recognition for a Big Performance... For his perfect six innings of relief (18 up, 18 down) in Saturday s 4-3 walk-off win over No. 3 North Carolina, junior righthander E.J. Encinosa picked up a number of accolades. On Monday, Encinosa was named ACC Pitcher of the Week for his performance, while on Tuesday, he earned recognition from College Baseball 360 as a Primetime Performer. Make Them Count... Second baseman Stephen Perez has had a key impact for the Hurricanes this season since returning from an arm injury that limited his playing time earlier in the year. The junior infi elder, who is hitting at a.261 clip in 2012, has an impressive.500 slugging percentage through his 28 starts. That fi gure is good for second-best on the team. Longest Hurricane Hitting Streaks in games Esteban Tresgallo (2/19-3/13) 9 games Dale Carey (3/24-4/7) 8 games Stephen Perez (3/17-3/30) 7 games Michael Broad (2/21-3/2) 7 games Tyler Palmer (2/21-3/2) 7 games Peter O Brien (3/18-3/30) 12 of Perez 24 hits have gone for extrabases (50%), including a team-best four triples and second-best three homeruns. His 20 RBI s are secondmost on the team despite missing games earlier in the season to rehab. His eightgame hitting streak in March is the third-longest of any player this season. Veterans Stepping Up... The Canes received a big boost in the offseason when transfer catcher Peter O Brien and graduate student lefthander Eric Erickson were both declared eligible by the NCAA. True to their elections, the team s two captains for the 2012 season have played key roles through the team s first stretch. O Brien is currently the team leader in a number of key hitting categories: batting average (.357), runs (28), doubles (nine) homeruns (10), slugging percentage (.696) and on-base percentage (.454). Through his fi rst eight starts of the season, Erickson (5-3) is ranked in the conference Top-25 for ERA (2.94, No. 17) and innings pitched (52.0, fi fth). He has a staffbest 44:4 K:BB ratio. Weekly Highlights... The Hurricanes fi nished the week 3-1, dropping their midweek game with No. 14 UCF but sweeping No. 3 North Carolina at Alex Rodriguez Park: Chantz Mack, who has seen increased playing time over the team s most recent stretch, started all four games of the week and fi nished second with four RBI. Jarred Mederos and Tyler Palmer recorded three starts apiece (after missing most of the Clemson serie) and responded favorably: a team-leading.364 average for Mederos and a team-best fi ve hits for Palmer. Bullpen arms E.J. Encinosa, Chris Diaz, AJ Salcines, Eric Nedeljkovic and Adam Sargent combined for 15.2 IP and only one earned run, an eye-popping 0.57 ERA. Freshman Fever in the Gables Head Coach Jim Morris has enjoyed the benefi ts of strong play from some of his youngest players so far this season. Boasting the longest hitting streak this season with a 15-gamer to open the season, freshman infi elder Esteban Tresgallo s play has been an integral part of the Canes early-season success. Junior Steven Ewing earned the win last time out against FGCU, throwing seven shutout innings with seven K s. Tresgallo currently boasts the third-highest batting average, (.297), the third-most doubles (7), the third-highest slugging percentage (.475), and the fourth-highest hit total (30). It was the second time in four tries the Canes have swept Rutgers to begin their season. Encinosa Returns to the Bullpen Junior right-hander E.J. Encinosa, who served as a starter for the 2011 season, has returned to the bullpen for the 2012 campaign. The gift - the largest ever to the University of Miami baseball program - has assisted the program in continuing to develop fi rst-class facilities. The offi cial announcement of his gift was made on Oct. 10, Alex Rodriguez Park has taken form in a three-phase process: Phase I called for seating modifi cations, new dugouts, new stadium lighting and utility infrastructure and new rest rooms. Phase II entailed renovating below the grand stand area in addition to adding new concession areas. The fi nal phase included adding a new clubhouse, weight room, training room, meeting room, video room and academic area. In addition, a new press box along with four VIP suites have been built atop the grandstand. This past offseason, addition seating was added down both lines while a new scoreboard was constructed in left fi eld.
