Lemmer 2 arxiv: v1 [hep-ph] 28 Jul Intitut für Theoretiche Phyik, Univerität Heidelberg, Philoophenweg 12, Heidelberg, Germany, and 2 School of Phyic, Univerity of the Witwaterrand, Johanneburg, Private Bag 3, WITS 2050, South Africa. (Dated: November 12, 2018) Recently Dai and Pennington have performed a comprehenive analyi of eentially all pion and kaon pair production data from two-photon colliion below 1.5 GeV, including all high tatitic reult from Belle, a well a the older data from Mark II at SLAC, CELLO at DESY, and Crytal Ball at SLAC. Impoing the baic contraint required by analyticity, unitarity, and croing ymmetry and making ue of Low low energy theorem for QED, they are able to extract the final-tate trong-interaction cattering amplitude for the intermediate ππ ππ and ππ K K reaction in a model-independent fahion. In addition, they provide good fit to the repective γγ ππ cro-ection that are known in the low-energy ector in the retricted angular range, co θ < Uing the parameter obtained in thi fahion, thee author contruct the γγ ππ cro-ection integrated over the full angular range. In thi work, we ue a verion of chiral perturbation theory developed by Oller and Oet to evaluate the final-tate trong-interaction amplitude directly theoretically and we compare our thu obtained low-energy QCD-baed reult directly with the amplitude extracted by Dai and Pennington. We alo calculate the γγ ππ cro-ection (integrated over the full angular range) and compare thee with thoe obtained by Dai and Pennington. Thi calculation thu give a more detailed inight into the fit of chiral perturbation theory, not jut to the meaured γγ ππ cro-ection, a i uually preented, but rather to a higher level of detail through the available analyi of the experimental data for the underlying final-tate trong-interaction meon-meon cattering amplitude ππ ππ and ππ K K themelve. The fit appear to be reaonable over the energy range conidered. PACS number: St, Rd, Lb deceaed Electronic addre: pk@phyik.uni-heidelberg.de
2 2 I. INTRODUCTION Photon-photon to meon-meon cro-ection have been meaured by everal experimental group over the lat decade [1 11]. The high tatitic experimental data obtained by the Belle Collaboration at KeKB for γγ π + π [1], γγ π 0 π 0 [2] and γγ π 0 η [3] cro-ection, plu the imilar high quality data for γγ K + K and γγ K 0 K0 for γγ center-of-ma colliion energie up to 1 GeV [8 10] have given new impetu to the field and can provide important new information with which to probe the poible quark tructure of the light iocalar f 0 (500), f 0 (980) and iovector a 0 (980) calar meon [12, 13]. Recently, Dai and Pennington have performed a comprehenive amplitude analyi of the procee γγ π + π, π 0 π 0 and K K below 1.5 GeV [14]. Uing all available experimental data, they have extracted the aociated final-tate tronginteraction tranition matrice, ππ π + π, π 0 π 0, K K in a model-independent fahion, uing only propertie of analyticity, unitarity and croing ymmetry, and Low low energy theorem for QED. Their fit pertain to the experimental data that are meaured over a retricted angular range, co θ < Having determined all parameter, they are able to contruct the cro-ection for γγ π + π, π 0 π 0 that would be expected after integrating over the full angular range. Such development open up everal intriguing poibilitie from a theoretical point of view. (a) Firt, the precie knowledge of the final-tate trong-interaction tranition matrice can be ued to tet the prediction of low-energy QCD, or at leat differentiate between variou model thereof. (b) In the energy range tudied, it open up the poibility of examining the viability of detailed combined tructure that potentially can form. Variou trong-interaction model with different tructural propertie have already been explored in ome detail for the light iocalar and iovector meon. Thee include, for example, decription with imple q q pair [15 19], more complex q 2 q 2 tate [20] or a K K molecular tructure [21 27] for the f 0 (980) and a 0 (980) in particular. Now, in addition to the trong interaction, which i known through the analyi of [14], electromagnetic effect can be incorporated, and, for example, the reonance formed in the production and ubequent decay of the K + K hadronic atom kaonium [28 31] can be tudied theoretically. Thi, in turn, may become acceible experimentally. The aim of the preent paper i to examine (a) above, and to determine how well chiral perturbation theory (CHPT) [32, 33], taken together with QED to calculate the final-tate trong-interaction and electromagnetic tranition matrice erve to give a good decription of the final-tate tronginteraction tranition matrice a compared with the model-independent curve extracted by Dai and Pennington from experiment [14]. Our calculated final-tate trong-interaction tranition matrice turn out both qualitatively and quantitatively to be in reaonable agreement for both the individual real and imaginary part. We alo calculate the full cro-ection for the γγ π + π and π 0 π 0 reaction, incorporating the electromagnetic contribution, and again find a reaonable, but not perfect, agreement with the extracted curve of Dai and Pennington. We leave the quetion of new tructure uch a the preence of kaonic atom appearing in the cro-ection, which require a olid knowledge of the trong-interaction tranition matrice, a preented here, to a forthcoming article. For our aim, both for evaluating the full tranition matrice, and for calculating the light-light to meon pair cro-ection we require a detailed analyi of the underlying electromagnetic interaction a well a the trong interaction component through meon meon cattering procee. Such tudie are not new. In particular, Oller and Oet [34] extract meon meon interaction within the peudocalar meon SU(3) flavor octet from the Lagrangian given by leading order CHPT [32, 33] a the appropriate theoretical realization of low energy QCD. They then ue thee interaction a input for the Lippmann Schwinger equation to provide a non perturbative calculation of the peudocalar meon meon cattering and reaction amplitude. We will follow thi approach here.
3 3 It i, however, important to bear in mind that the validity of the leading order CHPT reult are retricted to center-of-ma colliion energie up to O(1 GeV). A glance at the two photon colliion data [1 3] how that, while the f 0 (500), f 0 (980) and a 0 (980) again appear quite naturally in the CHPT calculation a dynamically generated reonance [35] below 1 GeV center-of-ma total energy, with energie and width compatible with experiment in the total cro-ection of the relevant reaction channel, the dominance of the wide f 2 (1270) and a 2 (1302) reonance eventually overhadow the CHPT contribution at higher energie. Whilt not important for tudying the γγ kaonium production proce, we remark that when the CHPT tranition amplitude are upplemented by contribution from the above two reonance in parametrized form [36], both being interpreted a d wave, helicity λ = 2 tate, plu the exchange of vector and axial vector octet reonance in the u and t channel [37], there i good agreement with the available photonphoton colliion data over the entire energy range from the two meon threhold to 1.4 MeV in the center-of-ma ytem. Thi article i arranged a follow: Section II addree the calculation of the T -matrice for the photon-photon interaction. In Subection IIA, IIB and II C, we build up the Born contribution, the contribution containing meon-meon cattering through CHPT and the reonant and axial contribution that cannot be decribed by CHPT, repectively. Thee are collated in Subection IID. In Section III, we compare our calculated amplitude and cro-ection with the extracted fit of [14] and experimental reult. We ummarize and conclude in Section IV. II. PRODUCTION AMPLITUDES FOR THE PROCESSES γγ π + π, π 0 π 0 AND K + K The theoretical bai for evaluating the γγ m 1 m 2 procee ha been tudied in different context or model before, ee for example [14, 35] and reference cited therein, and involve both the electromagnetic coupling of the photon to (charged) meon that i determined through QED, a well a quantum chromodynamic (QCD) for the final-tate trong interaction between the meon themelve. A the latter cannot be extracted directly from QCD itelf, we ue CHPT a an appropriate realiation of the trong interaction in the low-energy ector. Thee procee are repreented graphically in Fig. 1 by the Feynman diagram for the γγ m 1 m 2 tranition amplitude for incoming photon four momenta and helicitie (q 1, λ 1 ) and (q 2, λ 2 ) leading to outgoing meon with four momenta (p 1, p 2 ). The filled circle diagram in Fig. 1 a) denote the full tranition amplitude tenor it γγ m µν 1 m 2. Thi itelf i reolved into two part: a direct coupling of the electromagnetic interaction to the meon plu a term in which both the electromagnetic and trong interaction play a role. The firt i the Born term it µν B;γγ m 1 m 2, denoted in the figure a an open circle, and i only preent when photon couple to charged meon pair m + m in the final tate. The econd diagram, denoted a it µν S;γγ m 1 m 2, include the contribution from the trong meon meon interaction in the final tate. The direct coupling of the electromagnetic interaction to the meon via the Born term i again broken down into three individual term, alo hown in thi figure, ee b), and which contain one-meon exchange. A it tand, low-energy CHPT doe not account ufficiently for the f 2 (1270) and a 2 (1302) reonance, which have large width that extend well into the region below 1.0 GeV. Thee are accomodated in our formalim via parametrization. We thu proceed a follow: in ubection A, we tart with the Born term, in order to et our notation. We then evaluate contribution from the final-tate trong interaction uing CHPT in ubection B. In ubection C, we give the parametrization for reonant or axial, non-chpt term. Then, in ubection D, we build up the full T matrix, that conit of the amplitude T µν γγ m 1 m 2 = T µν B;γγ m 1 m 2 + T µν S;γγ m 1 m 2 + T µν R(A);γγ m 1 m 2 (1)

(a) The full amplitude (filled circle). Thi amplitude include trong interaction in the final tate a given by the 4 point meon meon cattering T matrix (filled box diagram).(b) The Born term (open circle) only involve the electromagnetic coupling vertice of photon to charged meon and i only preent for π + π or K + K in the final tate. with µ, ν = 0..3, and pecify the cro-ection. Throughout thi work, we ue natural unit, where = c = 1 and the charge e 2 /4π = α. A. Electromagnetic contribution to γγ m + m in the helicity bai A the proce γγ π + π due to electromagnetic interaction (Born approximation) ha been well-tudied in the literature, ee for example [37], we provide only a concie ummary of important reult here. Thee are directly applicable to the proce γγ K + K. In general, the tranition amplitude in the Born approximation correponding to the firt diagram of Fig. 1a), or all diagram in Fig. 1b) lead to the expreion T µν = e 2{ [ 2g µν (2p1 q 1 ) µ (2p 2 q 2 ) ν + B;γγ m + m (p 1 q 1 ) 2 m 2 ± ]} + (q 1 q 2, µ ν), (2) where m ± are the (common) mae of the final tate meon. Thi expreion ha to be contracted with polarization vector ɛ µ and ɛ ν. For an explicit evaluation, (without lo of generality) we ue a tandard choice [38] ɛ 0 = 0 and the 3-vector of helicity λ 1, λ 2, e λ1 (1), e λ2 (2), both oriented along right-handed orthogonal axe xy perpendicular to the photon momentum vector in the z direction, e λ1 (1) = i, e λ2 (2) = j and e λ1 (1) e λ2 (2) = δ λ1,λ 2 to fulfil the Lorentz condition. Thi lead to the expreion (e λ1 (1)) i T ij (e B;γγ m + m λ2 (2)) j = 2e 2{ (e λ1 (1) e λ2 (2) [ (p1 e λ1 (1))(p 2 e λ2 (2)) + (p 1 q 1 ) + (p 2 e λ1 (1))(p 1 e λ2 (2)) ]},(3) (p 1 q 2 )
5 5 where the indice i, j can take on the value 1, 2, 3. In the center-of-ma ytem, the incoming photon and outgoing meon line in Fig. 1b) have four momenta (q 1, q 2 ) = [ 1 2 P 0, ±q] and (p 1, p 2 ) = [ 1 2 P 0, ±p] where = P 0 i the total colliion energy. Uing thi, the contracted Born amplitude become ( TB;γγ m + m )λ 2 λ 1 = (e λ 2 (2)) i T ij (e B;γγ m + m λ1 (1)) j = 2e 2{ (e λ 2 (2) e λ1 (1)) 2 (v e λ 2 (2))(v e λ1 (1)) 1 v 2 co 2 θ) }, (4) where e λ1 (1) i aociated with particle 1 with incoming momentum q and e λ2 (2), with particle 2 with incoming momentum q. Alo, the center-of-ma velocity i v = 2p/P 0, and co θ = p q/pq give the polar angle of the cattering direction of the outgoing meon p relative to the incoming photon q. We chooe to evaluate (4) for the Born amplitude in the chiral helicity bai that i defined by e R,L (i) = 1 2 (e 1 (i)±e 2 (i)), i = 1, 2. Now one note that in the center-of-ma ytem, the total helicity of the colliding photon pair can only take on the value λ = 0 or 2, and thi label i ufficient to characterize the contracted T -matrice, which we denote a T (λ). Then the individual (contracted) amplitude are eaily found [35] to be: ( T (λ=0) B;γγ m + m ) R(2)R(1) ( T (λ=2) B;γγ m + m ) L(2)R(1) = ( T (λ=0) B;γγ m + m ) L(2)L(1) = i 2e2 (1 v 2 ) 1 v 2 co 2 θ, (5) = ( T (λ= 2) B;γγ m + m ) R(2)L(1) = i2e2 v 2 in 2 θe 2iφ 1 v 2 co 2 θ, (6) An expanion of the T (λ) in pherical harmonic Y B;γγ m + m J,λ (θ, φ) for each total helicity λ yield the partial contracted amplitude T (J,λ), which can be ued to identify the leading B;γγ m + m and d wave contribution to (5) and (6). One find T (0,0) B;γγ m + m = 2ie 2[ 1 v 2 2v T (2,2) ln 1 + v ] 4πY0,0 1 v 2v 3 B;γγ m + m = 2ie 2[ 1 v (1 v2 ) 2 v = p/q = 1 4m ± ln 1 + v ] 15π 1 v 2 Y 2,2(θ, φ) m ± = m π, m K (7) Here we have dropped the chiral indice, which are no longer neceary. General expreion for T (J,0) and T (J,2) for all allowed J Λ are available in the Appendix, ee (A.1) to B;γγ m + m B;γγ m + m (A.5). However, the leading-order partial-wave amplitude given above together account [35] for 90% of the calculated Born cro-ection for 1 GeV 2 and thu build a convenient working aumption. While the T -matrice will be of direct interet to u, for completene we note that the individual helicity cro-ection can be evaluated. For example, for the proce γγ π + π, for helicity 0, the differential cro-ection i o that σ (0) B (γγ π+ π ) = α2 v 2 dσ (0) B (γγ π+ π ) dω 4π = ( 1 2 ) v 64π 2 = α2 v 2 (T (λ=0) B;γγ ππ ) R(1)R(2) 2 (1 v 2 ) 2 (1 v 2 co 2 θ) 2, (8) dω (1 v2 ) 2 (1 v 2 co 2 θ) 2 = 2π α2 v [ (1 v 2 ) + (1 v2 ) 2 2 4v ln 1 + v ]. (9) 1 v
6 6 Likewie for helicity 2, one ha σ (2) B (γγ π+ π ) = α2 v dω (v2 in 2 θ) 2 2 4π (1 v 2 co 2 θ) 2 = 2π α2 v [ 1 + (1 v2 ) (3 2v2 v 4 ) ln 1 + v ] 2 4v 1 v. (10). The full differential Born cro-ection i found to be dσ B (γγ π + π ) dω = α2 v [ (1 v 2 in 2 θ ) 2 (v 2 in 2 θ) 2 ] v 2 co 2 θ (1 v 2 co 2 θ) 2 and integrating over the full angular range yield the Born cro-ection in agreement with the reult of [37]. σ B (γγ π + π ) = 2π α2 v [2 v 2 1 v4 2v ln 1 + v ] 1 v (11) (12) B. Non-perturbative trong-interaction contribution to the meon-meon reaction amplitude To obtain the full tranition matrix hown in Fig. 1a), the effect of the trong interaction in the final tate mut now be taken into account. In particular, we firt need to evaluate the T - matrice that are aociated with the quare diagram in Fig. 1a) and which account for meon-meon cattering. Here we follow the approach offered by CHPT, following [34] and briefly ummarizing the eential point. The meon pair (K K) I, (ππ) I and (π 0 η) I of good iopin I, interact in the final tate via 4 point vertice given by [35] [44] Vm I 1 m 2 ;m 3 m 4 = < I, m 1 m 2 L 2 I, m 3 m 4 >= Vm I 3 m 4 ;m 1 m 2 L 2 = 1 ( 12f 2 T r f ( µ ΦΦ Φ µ Φ) 2 + MΦ 4), (13) at tree level, after coupling both the initial and final two meon tate to good iopin I. The ymmetry in the interaction under the interchange of label i due to time-reveral invariance. L 2 i the leading order CHPT interaction Lagrangian denity [32, 33]; T r f denote the trace in SU(3) flavor pace of the matrice contructed from Φ = 1 2 π η π + K + π 1 2 π η K 0 K K0 2 6 η In (13), M = diag(m 2 π, m 2 π, 2m 2 K m2 π) i a diagonal matrix of (bare) meon mae, and f i the (bare) pion decay contant. Notationally, we abbreviate the 4-point vertice in (13) and the meon-meon tranition amplitude T m1 m 2 m 3 m 4 in a compact fahion a ha been previouly introduced in [34]. The indice (i, j) = (1, 2) are ued to identify the pecific meon pair involved: 1 indicate K K in both iopin tate I = 0 and 1, while 2 indicate ππ for I = 0 (or I = 2), and π 0 η for I = 1, ee (A.11) through (A.15) in the Appendix. chennel labelling convention of [14]). Uing the Vij I equation for the cattering amplitude T I ij ; (Note that thi follow the convention of [35], but i oppoite to the obtained from (13), one contruct the coupled of good iopin for thee meon pair. 7 7 are integral equation that involve meon meon interaction Vij I in intermediate tate, where at leat one of the tate i or j i off hell. However, in the cae of -wave cattering, Oller and Oet have hown explicitly [34] that one can replace the Vij I by their on hell value in intermediate tate too, ince their off hell part are additive and can be re aborbed a a renormalization factor that replace the bare coupling contant 1/f and meon mae by their phyical value, f π 93 MeV and (m π, m K, m η ) (140, 496, 547) MeV. The on hell verion of Vij I are lited explicitly in (A.16). Thee only depend on the external variable = P0 2, the total center-of-ma energy quared of the meon pair. Thi in turn mean that the integration over the four momenta of meon pair in intermediate tate can be factored [34], and the coupled integral equation for the Tij I () become coupled algebraic equation that can be olved exactly. The reult are T11() I = [(1 V22Π I 22)V11 I + V12Π I 22V21][D I ()] 1 (14) T12() I = V12[D I ()] 1 (15) for (K K) I (K K) I in both iopin channel, I = 0, 1, and (K K) 0 (ππ) 0 or (K K) 1 (π 0 η) 1 repectively. Notice that T12 I () = T 21 I () i alo time-reveral invariant. In the equation (14) and (15), Π I ii denote the meon loop diagram and i given by 1 d 4 l 1 1 i ΠI ii() = ɛ (2π) 4 (l 2 m 2 a) (l + P 0 ) 2 m 2, = P0 2 (16) b for two meon of ma (m a, m b ) a identified by the label I and i; the ymmetry factor ɛ = [1/2, 1] for identical (non identical) meon propagating in the loop [39]. Thu Π I 11 = Π K K for K K in both iopin channel, while Π I 22 = Π ππ for I = (0, 2) or Π π 0 η for I = 1. The common denominator of T I 11 () and T I 12 (), DI (), i given by D I () = (1 V I 11Π I 11)(1 V I 22Π I 22) V I 12Π I 22V I 21Π I 11, I = (0, 1) (17) Since pion coupled to good iopin behave like identical boon [39], (ππ) I (ππ) I wave cattering can only occur for I = 0 or 2. The relevant T matrice are T22() 0 = [T11()] (18) T22() 2 = V22(1 2 V22Π 2 22) 1 (19) for (ππ) 0 (ππ) 0 and (ππ) 2 (ππ) 2, ince in the latter channel only the diagonal interaction vertex V22 2 i non zero, ee (A.16). The related S matrix element, S2 22 = exp(2iδ2 2 ), where δ2 2 i a real phae hift, i thu unitary. The integral in (16) diverge at large four momenta and require regularization. Explicit expreion for the loop integral (with and without differing mae) are given in [31] uing a cut off Λ in O(4) momentum pace, ee (A.17) to (A.19). Thu, the Tij I () are all known in cloed form. The complex pole in P 0 = of the tranition amplitude T11 I (P 0) and T12 I (P 0) in (14) and (15) can be found for I = (0, 1) from the root of their common denominator D I (P0 I ) = 0 in (17). Thee root, which determine the meon ma M I and half-width Γ I /2 for each iopin, lie on the appropriate econd heet [34] in the lower half of the cut complex P 0 plane, i.e. P0 I = (M I i 2 ΓI ). Thi relation aume a non relativitic Breit Wigner hape for the tranition amplitude in the vicinity of it peak value at P 0 = M I. One find two root for I = 0 and a ingle root for I = 1, that correpond to the two calar iocalar meon f 0 (500) (or σ), f 0 (980) and a ingle calar iovector a 0 (980) meon repectively [35]. We ue the O(4) cutoff of Λ = GeV that fixe [31] the real part of one I = 0 root,

We are now able to contruct the contribution in which the trong interaction influence the final tate. According to the econd diagram in Fig. 1 (a) we identify T µν S;γγ m 1 m 2 to be given by the gauge invariant expreion T µν S;γγ m 1 m 2 = T () m1 m 2 ;m + m { d 4 l 1 (2π) 4 i (q 1 + l) 1 } i (q 2 l) < q 1 + l, q 2 l it µν B q 1q 2 > e2 2π 2 [gµν (q 1 q 2 ) q µ 2 qν 1] J m ± () T () m1 m 2 2 ;m + m (20) for a propagating charged meon pair m + m in the loop. The function J m± () i found to be J m± () = { 1 4m2 ± { m2 ± [ in 1 4m 2 ± [ coh 1 ] 2 } θ(4m 2 ± ) 4m 2 i π ± 2 ] 2 } θ( 4m 2 ±). In thi expreion, the econd term for 4m 2 ± arie by continuing the firt a a function of onto the upper lip of the cut 4m 2 ± < < along the real axi of the complex plane. The final reult in (20) follow after factoring out the meon meon cattering box diagram from the integral. Thi approximation [35], like that for Tij I (), place the intermediate incoming charged meon pair m + m of T m1 m 2 ;m + m on hell to render thi amplitude a function of only. Note, however, that the charged meon in the final tate of it µν B under the integral ign are, by contrat, both till off hell. Allowing for different combination of intermediate meon pair to be

(21) Thi cattering amplitude i independent of the cattering angle and i thu pure wave. Hence T (0,0) S;γγ m 1 m 2 = ie2 8π 2 [ m ± J m± ()T m1 m 2 ;m + m ] 4πY0,0 (22) when contracted with repect to polarization vector of total helicity λ = 0. There i no λ = 2 contribution in thi cae. C. Non Chiral Perturbation Theory contribution A already commented upon in the Introduction, additional channel background contribution T (2,2) R;γγ m 1 m 2 from the f 2 (1270) and a 2 (1320) reonance with quantum number I G (J P C ) = 0 + (2 ++ ) and 1 (2 ++ ) to the cattering amplitude can be expected to be important at center-ofma energie below 1 GeV. We denote thee a T (2,2) R;γγ m 1 m 2. In addition, the t channel axial exchange amplitude ariing from the 1 (1 ++ ) a 1 (1260) reonance, denoted a T A;γγ π 0 η, alo not only play a role above O(1 GeV) [35, 37], but alo influence the amplitude and cro-ection below 1 GeV. All uch contribution lie beyond the cope of the CHPT calculation outlined above and are parametrized. The f 2 and a 2 reonance have been interpreted [36] a pure d wave, helicity 2 tate (J, λ) = (2, 2). We parametrize thee by a relativitic Breit Wigner reonance amplitude [41] for γγ M R m 1 m 2 a T (2,2) R;γγ m 1 m 2 = 16π 20π v [Γ(2) γγ ] 1/2 i M 2 R + im RΓ [Br(m 1m 2 )Γ] 1/2 Y 2,2 (θ, φ), R = f 2, a 2 (23) for a reonance of ma and total width M R, Γ repectively and with partial width Γ (2) γγ and Γ(m 1 m 2 ) = Br(m 1 m 2 )Γ for the decay into two photon of oppoite helicity, or two meon repectively; Br(m 1 m 2 ) i the branching ratio for the latter decay. Due to their large total width ( 100 to 200 MeV), the a 2 and f 2 reonance can contribute to production cro ection already at energie 1 GeV, well below their peak poition. We will illutrate thi in the next ection for the γγ π 0 π 0 channel where the total cro-ection, (26), i jut the um of the partial cro-ection determined by CHPT and the f 2 reonance amplitude eparately, without any interference term. D. Total γγ meon meon tranition amplitude and cro-ection The total contracted tranition amplitude T γγ m1 m 2 can now be calculated from (1). For each pecific exit channel, thi can be written to leading order a a um of - and d-wave component: T γγ m1 m 2 = T (0,0) γγ m 1 m 2 + T (2,2) γγ m 1 m 2, (24)

The total γγ meon meon cro-ection can then be expreed a the um of the moduli quared of the T (J,λ), due to the orthogonality of the pherical harmonic they contain. The individual T γγ m1 m 2 matrice T γγ m (0,0) 1 m 2 and T γγ m (2,2) 1 m 2 that determine thee partial cro ection are given explicitly in Table II for the three exit channel m 1 m 2 = π 0 π 0, π + π and π 0 η. NUMERICAL RESULTS FOR SCATTERING AMPLITUDES AND CROSS-SECTIONS A. m 1 m 2 m 3 m 4 cattering amplitude One of the main contribution to the total cattering amplitude in (1) arie from final-tate trong interaction through meon-meon cattering. The latter amplitude themelve are an important input to the photon-photon cro-ection, and were calculated eparately in Section IIB within the framwork of CHPT. In [14] thee amplitude have been extracted from the data in a model-independent fahion. Here we compare our calculated reult for the real and imaginary part of the tranition matrice with the reult of their fit, ee Fig. 2, for the procee ππ ππ, ππ K K and K K K K. A can be een in thi figure, there i an overall good qualitative agreement between the tranition matrice calculated from CHPT and thoe extracted from experiment. However, quantitatively

The real part are given by the black curve, the imaginary value by the red one. there are difference, notably for the tranition ππ ππ, in which the real part underetimate the extracted value at energie below 1.0 GeV, while the imaginary part overetimate the extracted value in the lower energy range, peaking at a lower value of P 0. Having determined thee amplitude, we focu on the photon-photon to meon-meon croection. Thu, the contribution from the a 2 and f 2 (a well a the poibilitie that could arie from new phyic) can be invetigated more cloely. Due to the large total width of thee two reonance ( 100 to 200 MeV repectively), they can be expected to contribute to production cro-ection already at energie 1 GeV, well below their peak poition. In the γγ π 0 π 0 channel the total cro-ection given in(26) i jut the um of the partial cro-ection determined by CHPT and f 2 reonance amplitude eparately, without any interference term, a een in Table II. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS In thi paper, we have calculated the amplitude and cro-ection for light-light colliion giving rie to π + π, π 0 π 0 and K K in the final tate. Our theoretical framework combine the Born cattering tranition amplitude required through QED with thoe that can be calculated via CHPT to decribe the low-energy regime, and include parametrization of the reonant meon uch a f 2 (1279) and a 2 (1302), which cannot be accounted for within CHPT, but which are eential for the evaluation of the cro-ection. We compare our reult with thoe extracted from [14] which are extracted from all the data available today, including the high tatitic data from Belle, a well a the older data from Mark II at SLAC, CELLO at DESY and the Crytal Ball at SLAC
