1 Charged charmonium-like Z (443) from recattering in conventional B decay P. Pakhlov Mocow Intitute of Phyic and Technology, Mocow Region, Ruia Mocow Phyical Engineering Intitute, Mocow, Ruia arxiv: v3 [hep-ph] 26 Jun 215 Abtract T. Uglov Mocow Phyical Engineering Intitute, Mocow, Ruia Mocow Intitute of Phyic and Technology, Mocow Region, Ruia In a previou paper we uggeted an explanation for the peak deignated a Z(443) in theψ π ma pectrum, oberved by Belle in B ψ π K decay, a an effect of D D ψ π recattering in the decay B D D, where the D i an a-yet unoberved radial excitation of the peudocalar ground tate D -meon. In thi paper, we demontrate that thi hypothei provide an explanation of the double Z -like peaking tructure, which were tudied by LHCb with much higher tatitic. While according to our hypothei, the origin of the peaking tructure i due to the kinematical reflection of conventional reonance in the unoberved intermediate tate, the amplitude of the Z(443) peak carrie a Breit-Wigner-like complex phae, ariing from the intermediate D reonance. Thu, our hypothei i entirely conitent with the recent LHCb meaurement of the reonant-like amplitude behavior of the Z(443). We perform a toy fit to the LHCb data, which illutrate that our approach i alo conitent with all the oberved tructure in the LHCb M(ψ π ) pectrum. We ugget a critical tet of our hypothei that can be performed experimentally. Keyword: Recattering effect, charmonium like tate PACS: Hw, 14.4.Lb, 14.4.Rt Many XYZ tate above open charm threhold, and decaying into charmonium and light hadron() have been oberved within the pat decade. Their conventional interpretation a charmonium tate remain controverial a their propertie, epecially their large decay rate into final tate without open charm, do not eaily match the level of heretofore unoberved charmonia. Variou exotic explanation, uch a tetraquark, molecular tate, charmonium hybrid and hadrocharmonium are alo not fully embraced by the phyic community, a they cannot decribe the variety of oberved tate, and all their meaured propertie, within a ingle elfconitent approach. The firt charmonium-like tate, the Z(443), which i entirely inconitent with a imple charmonium interpretation, wa oberved by Belle [1, 2] in 27 a a peak in theψ π ma near M 443 MeV in B decay. Interpreted a a real reonance containing a c c pair, it minimal quark content given it non-zero charge (u dc c), i necearily exotic. The exitence of the Z(443) wa cat into doubt by BaBar [3], but the recent Z(443) obervation by LHCb [4] unambiguouly (with ignificance 14σ) upport Belle claim. Among the exotic explanation of the Z(443), the mot popular are the tetraquark [5], hadrocharmonium [6] and DD molecule [7]. There are alo nonreonant interpretation uch a the cup effect [8], recattering via the chain B D D 1 (242)K ψ π K [9], and the initial ingle pion emiion mechanim [1]. In our previou paper [11], we uggeted another poible explanation of the Z(443) peak, reulting from D D ψ π recattering in the decay B D D. Although thi decay ha not yet been oberved and even the D -meon not yet dicovered, the branching fraction for the decay B D D i expected to be large, imilar to that oberved for B D D [13], while the ma of the D i predicted in the range (26 265) MeV which corre- Preprint ubmitted to Phyic Letter B June 29, 215
2 pond to the range that provide a Z(443) peak value conitent with the extant experimental data. If our ad hoc hypothei i correct, the origin of the Z(443) peaking tructure i caued by the preence of a conventional reonance (the D meon) in the hidden intermediate tate. However, our explanation alo implie an intereting underlying phenomenon: namely, a non-vanihing recattering amplitude over a wide range of M( D D ). In thi Letter, we demontrate that our approach i fully conitent with all the experimental data, including the recent Z(443) phae tudy by LHCb, a the Z(443) phae would then arie from the Breit-Wigner D amplitude. We how that other tructure that are evident in the LHCbψ π pectrum can be attributed to imilar effect. We alo ugget here a critical tet of our hypothei that can be performed by Belle, BaBar and LHCb. Firt, we note that in our previou paper [11] we have predicted the quantum number of the Z(443) to be J P = 1 baed on the imple argument that the D D ψ π recattering hould be dominated by S -wave in both the colliding D D and alo the producedψ π ytem. Thi prediction wa confirmed by ubequent Belle [12] and LHCb [4] meaurement. We alo predicted the preence of other tructure in theψ π pectrum, in particular near M 42 MeV, D decay chain. Such a broad peak at M = 4239 MeV i, indeed, oberved in the LHCb data, and ha been interpreted a another Z reonance. We reiterate the main point of our hypothei. A in our previou paper [11] we conider B decay governed by the tree diagram hown in Fig. 1. In thee decay the W i directly coupled to the radial excitation of which arie from another B D the D and D -meon (the D ) in a imilar way a to their ground tate. One of uch mode, B D1 (27) D, wa oberved by Belle with a relatively large branching fractionb(b D1 (27) D ) B(D1 (27) D K) 1 3 [13]. The meaured quantum number of the D1 (27) (J P = 1 ) ugget and D the interpretation of thi tate a the D meon. Other channel and even the D have not, thu far, been explicitly earched for experimentally. However, the incluive B D ( ) D ( ) K branching fraction are large: they vary from.1 to 1% [15]. It i natural to aume that they hould be aturated by two-body mode with intermediate radial D and D excitation, ince the known contribution of orbital D excitation to thee final tate i mall [15]. The D -meon i expected to decay motly to the D K final tate, a the decay D DK i forbidden by parity conervation, while the D decay to both DK 2 b) B B D' D b q * D K π ψ W c) B c c q ( ) D ' D * (*) * D ' D * D K Figure 1: Feynman diagram for B decay into radially excited D meon. Recattering procee ( DD ) ψπ, repreented by triangle diagram: for the chain 1 and b) for the chain 2. and D K [15]. Therefore the B decay under conideration hadronize into D ( ) D ( ) K final tate. We note that two charmed meon are produced patially at the ame point and fly apart relatively lowly with v/c.3.5. Therefore one can expect the non vanihing recattering of two charmed meon into charmonium plu a light meon. Conidering the S -wave recattering a a recombination of the charm quark from one charmed meon and the charm antiquark from the other into charmonium, with the imultaneou merging of a light quark-antiquark pair into a light meon, we conclude that only D D c.c. tate can reult in recattering intoψ π or J/ψπ. Other (D D and D D ) can recatter to other charmonia and/or other light meon. The recattering amplitude can be determined by the overlap integral of two product of wave function with the ame quark content, taking into account color uppreion. We do not attempt uch calculation, which can only be done by invoking a model for light and heavy meon and charmonium wave function, but imply aume that thi amplitude i mall but not vanihing, and doe not change dramatically within the range of interet (M D M D < M ( DD ) 4.8 GeV). Of the decay chain dicued above, only two can contribute to theψ π K final tate: and B D D, followed by D D K, (1) B D D, followed by D D K. (2) They correpond to the triangle diagram in Fig. 1 b) and c) repectively. The decay B D D which π ψ

We note that while parity i not conerved in B decay, the recattering proce i mediated by the trong interaction and require parity conervation. We introduce a common notation, ( DD ), to refer to both D D and D D ytem in the reaction (1) and (2), repectively, and deignate a Z a peudoparticle with J P = 1 formed by the ( DD ) combination before it ubequent decay toψ π. A in our previou paper, we calculate the amplitude of interet in the on-hell approximation of the triangle diagram (Fig. 1), taking into account the D ( ) Breit- Wigner amplitude. We alo include the D pin rotation amplitude, which provide the proper D helicity in the Z ytem, correponding to S -wave formation of the Z. Depending on the D ( ) decay angle different value of D ( ) ma within the Breit-Wigner ditribution can yield the ame ( DD ) ma. Thu, the total amplitudea Z hould be calculated a a uperpoition of all allowed value of M(D ( ) ), accounting for the variation in phae with ma. Unlike our previou paper, here we therefore integrate the entire allowed kinematic region, explicitly including the variation in phae. Thi procedure i more rigorou, and the Z hape i alo lightly changed, relative to our previou calculation. The full decay amplitude ha the following form in the helicity formalim: A(M Z M ( DD ) )= A BW (M D ( ) ) (3) D J,λ (θ dec) D 1 λ, (θ rot) D 1, (θ form) dm D ( ) where J i the D ( ) D ( ) λ pin;θ dec i the decay angle of the (the angle between the B and D ( ) in the D ( ), 3 ret frame);θ rot i the rotation angle of the D pin from the D ( ) frame for the reaction (1) or the B frame for the reaction (2) to the Z frame;θ form i the formation angle of Z, i.e. the angle between the B and D in the Z ret frame. The firt Wigner D-function i reponible for the proper angular ditribution of the D ( ) decay (in the cae conidered in (2), only the zero helicity projection i conidered). The econd function, D 1,λ (θ rot), decribe the D pin rotation from the frame where it i produced to the frame where it i aborbed. Finally, the D 1, (θ form) correpond to the proper formation of the pin-1 Z peudotate from the vector (D ) and the peudocalar (D). Two variable, M D ( ) andθ dec, fully decribe the three-body kinematic, thu M ( DD ),θ rot andθ form are function of thee two variable. We have performed the calculation of Equation (3) numerically uing Monte Carlo imulation. We firt generate the B D ( ) D ( ) decay kinematic. The ma and width of the D are fixed to the PDG value (M=2.79 MeV,Γ=.112 MeV [15]); the D parameter are fixed to M= 261 MeV andγ=1 MeV a in our previou paper [11] (the expected 2S 1 2S 3 plitting i (6 1) MeV [14]). For each generated event, we then calculate the expected contribution to the full amplitude according to Equation (3) (thi amplitude i a function of the kinematic characteritic of a particular event). Finally, we um over (complex) amplitude correponding to the ame M ( DD ) bin. The reulting Z hape (equal to A 2 ) for the chain (1) and (2) are hown in Fig. 2; for the latter we plot eparately the contribution of different D helicitie. The phae of the Z amplitude, arg(a Z ), from the reaction (1), which i reponible for the mot prominent peak of the Z(443), i preented in Fig. 3.

Equivalently, we plot the Argand diagram Fig. 3 b) uing the ame M Z binning a the LHCb experiment for direct comparion. The initial phae in our cae i arbitrarily et toπ, while for the LHCb experiment, it i fixed relative to the reference B ψ K phae from their 4D-fit. The phae variation around the Z(443) peak arie from the D ( ) Breit-Wigner phae variation via the convolution with the angular variable in Equation (3). We note that the higher ma region of D ( ) correpond to lower Z(443) ma, and vice vera. Therefore, in the region around the Z(443) the phae turn out to have oppoite behavior relative to the conventional Breit-Wigner definition: it tend to rotate clockwie in the Argand diagram. However, experimentally the direction of amplitude rotation cannot be determined a there i a two-fold ambiguity (A A) in the extraction of the Z amplitude from the meaured A Z A non Z 2. Thu, our hypothei i fully conitent with the LHCb Argand diagram. To further illutrate that our hypothei i plauible, we ue the LHCbψ π ma pectrum with vetoed K (89) and K2 (143) reonance (Fig. 4 from [4]) and perform a toy fit to thi pectrum ignoring interference between major B ψ K ( ) and recattering contribution. Thi i not a fully correct procedure, we thu ue it for illutration only, but having acce to the publihed one-dimenional Mψ 2 π projection only, we can not calculate phae-dependent interference effect. We firt etimate the remaining contribution from K (89), K2 (143) and S -wave three-body phae pace, after electing the 1. < MK 2 π < 1.8 GeV 2 interval, uing Fig. 3 and b) from [4]. The LHCb data point with thee three contribution uperimpoed (the hitogram color correpond to the LHCb notation) are hown in 4 Fig. 4. The pectrum in Fig. 4 b) i obtained after a bin-by-bin ubtraction of K ( ) and non-reonant threebody decay. We attribute the remaining pectrum to the recattering contribution and perform a fit to thi pectrum with a um of contribution from the reaction (1) and (2), therefore with five free parameter. We note that all intermediate B decay channel with variou D ( ) tate contribute to Z production coherently with the ame univeral recattering amplitude. The fit reult are plotted in Fig. 4 b) with the black olid line, and nicely decribe all the feature oberved in data. We etimate the parameter of the D meon from the fit to the LHCb data. We vary the D ma and width and calculate the confidence level of the fit for each et of value. The reult of thi exercie i preented in Fig. 5, where the green, magenta and blue contour correpond to 1σ, 2σ and 3σ level, repectively. The D parameter turn out to be well tatitically contrained by the fit: M = (2614±4) MeV, Γ = (92±1) MeV. However, there i a ytematic uncertainty in thee value due to the effect of interference with the K ( ) background. To etimate thi effect we acribe different phae to the amplitude of K (89), K2 (143) and S -wave three-body phae pace and perform another fit to the ditribution in Fig. 4 with varying D ma and width. Variation of the bet fit D parameter depending on the K ( ) phae are etimated to be ±1 MeV for the D ma and 2 13 MeV for it width. We thu conclude that, to explain the Z(443) peak, the parameter of the D meon hould be in the interval: M=(2614± ) MeV, Γ=(92±1±1) MeV. Soon after thi paper wa ubmitted, another experimental analyi of B J/ψK π by Belle ap-

The exitence of the broad tructure at M(J/ψπ ) 42 MeV i etablihed in that meaurement with high ignificance and with preferred aignment of the quantum number J P = 1 ; trong evidence for a Z(443) ignal i alo found. The parameter of the two bump are conitent between the J/ψπ and ψ π analyze. However, their relative phae with repect to B ψk ( ) background look different, (e.g. the Z(443) peak i een a detructively interfering). While in our approach only the trength of the ( DD ) recattering amplitude, which are real number, into J/ψπ andψ π can be different, thi fact can be attributed to the different phae of the interfering K ( ( )) background amplitude under Z in thee two mode. Indeed, the 3-body phae pace i different due to the different J/ψ andψ mae. Thu, not only the different helicity region of the ame K ( ( )) contribute to the Z region in thee two mode, but alo relative contribution of allowed K may differ. A real tet of our hypothei can be achieved with 5 a 4D-fit performed by Belle, BaBar and LHCb for B ψ π K decay uing amplitude (3) intead of reonance-like Z. Obviouly the fitting model with recattering include many free parameter: at leat three complex amplitude to decribe all poible contribution a well a the a-yet-undetermined parameter of the D reonance. It i important to fix thee amplitude uing a tudy of B D D K and B D D K, which i poible at B-factorie or LHCb. However, there i an eaier way to check our hypothei experimentally. The Z -like tructure hould appear in the ditribution of M (D D) co2 (θ form ) in either B D D K or B D D K decay, or in both. The M (D D) co2 (θ form ) i the (D D) combination ma pectrum corrected in each bin for the fraction of the D tranvere component in the ( DD ) ret frame, and alo the 1 formation factor D 2 (θ form )=co 2 (θ form ). In ummary, we how that D D ψ π recattering in the decay chain B D D, D D K can explain the appearance of an oberved peak in the ψ π ma pectrum in B ψ π K decay around M 443 MeV and alo correctly decribe the quantum number and amplitude reonance-like behavior. Thi approach allow alo to decribe another peak at M 4.2 GeV oberved in LHCb data and which ha been interpreted a another exotic reonance, a well a a high ma tructure at the upper bound of the ma pectrum, which remain till underaturated by the LHCb fit (with many K and two Z(443) included).
