The difference in the reult from earlier calculation have been pointed out. The formula obtained in the preent work ha been applied to etimate phyical quantitie like equilibration rate of gluon and the energy lo of fat gluon in the gluonic plama. PACS number:.38.mh,5.75.-q,.85.+p,5.75.nq arxiv: v3 [nucl-th] 3 Feb 0 The radiation of oft gluon from the generic partonic (P) procee P +P P 3 + P +gluon play a crucial role in the tudy of quark gluon plama (QGP) expected to be formed in heavy ion colliion (HIC) at ultrarelativitic energie. The number nonconerving proce, g+g g+g+g ha drawn particular attention in view of it importance for the (i) chemical equilibration in the deconfined phae of quark and gluon [ 3], (ii) energy lo of fat gluon propagating through gluonic plama [, 5], (iii) evaluation of tranport coefficient of the gluonic plama [6 9], etc. The Gunion-Bertch (GB) [0] formula for the pectrum of the radiated gluonfromthe proceeg+g g+g+g habeenwidely ued in many of thee calculation. Recently, attempt have been made to reviit/generalize the GB formula [, ]. The main purpoe of the preent work i to find the correction to the GB formula by relaxing ome of the approximation previouly adopted. Then, we inpect the effect of the correction term relative to the GB formula on ome phyical quantitie like the equilibration time and the energy lo of fat gluon in a gluonic plama. The reult obtained here can be extended to other partonic procee uch a q + q q + q + g, q +g q +g+g, etc., where q tand for quark. We coniderthe proceg(k )+g(k ) g(k 3 )+g(k )+ g(k 5 ). The quare of the invariant amplitude for thi reaction can be written elegantly a [3]: where M gg ggg = N 3 g6 c N Nc D [(35)+(35)+(35) + (53)+(53)+(53) + (35)+(35)+(35) + (35)+(35)+(35)], () N = (k.k ) +(k.k 3 ) +(k.k ) + (k.k 5 ) +(k.k 3 ) +(k.k ) +(k.k 5 ) + (k 3.k ) +(k 3.k 5 ) +(k.k 5 ) ; () trambakb@vecc.gov.in and D = (k.k )(k.k 3 )(k.k )(k.k 5 )(k.k 3 ) (k.k )(k.k 5 )(k 3.k )(k 3.k 5 )(k.k 5 ), (3) (ijklm) = (k i.k j )(k j.k k )(k k.k l )(k l.k m )(k m.k i ). () N c (= 3) i the number of color, g = πα i the color charge, and α i the trong coupling. The quantity, M gg ggg after implification can be written a (ee Appendix): M gg ggg = g M gg gg [(+ t + 5t t3 3) ( 3 + t 3t )k + ( 5 + t + 5t 3 )k ], (5) where M gg gg = (9/)g /t, = (k + k ),t = (k k 3 ), u = (k k ), k i the tranvere momentum of the radiated gluon. The O(k ) and O(k0 ) term appearing in Eq. 5 were abent in Ref. []. Henceforth thee two term will be called the correction term. We will demontrate that the contribution from thee term are non-negligible and will have crucial importance for the phenomenology of heavy ion colliion at ultrarelativitic energie. While the detail for the derivation of the Eq. 5 i given in the Appendix, we would like to check the effect of the correction term in Eq. 5 to phyical quantitie like equilibration time of gluon and energy lo of fat gluon propagating through a gluonic fluid. Let u firt dicu the role of the correction term in the equilibrium time cale of gluon. The procee g+g g+g, g+g g+g+g, g+g g+g+g+g etc are reponible for maintaining equilibration in the ytem. In the preent work we would like to etimate the contribution from the correction term of the proce g+g g+g+g a mentioned above. We evaluate the equilibration rate for thi proce (with = 8T a in []) with and without the correction term. The equilibration rate obtained from the pectra of Ref. [], []
and preent work normalized by the GB pectra (Γ R ) are diplayed in Fig.. We oberve that the equilibration rate obtained with the correction term i maller compared to the cenario when the correction are neglected for the entire range of temperature under conideration. Thi indicate that the contribution from the correction term will enhance the equilibration in the gluonic ytem. Before going into etimating the energy lo of fat parton moving through a gluonic fluid, ome clarification are in order here. The energy lo of fat parton in QGP ha been evaluated rigorouly(ee [, 5] for review). In the preent work the aim i not to achieve the ame level of rigor but to check the effect of the correction term dicued before on the energy lo of fat parton. The energy lo of high-energy parton propagating through QGP i a field of high contemporary interet. Experimentally the energy diipation ha been meaured through the uppreion of the tranvere momentum (p T ) ditribution of hadron produced in Au+Au colliion relative to the binary caled p+p interaction at the ame center of ma energy. The nature of the uppreion may be ued a a tool for diagnoi of QGP formation in nuclear colliion at Relativitic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The two mot common mechanim for the energy lo are elatic and inelatic or radiative procee. Among variou in-elatic procee involving quark and gluon, the proce: g+g g+g+g play a major role. In the hard procee the gluon produced with virtuality Q i highly off-hell becaue during the colliion proce the color field of the gluon i tripped off. Therefore, the highly virtual gluon will develop a dead cone - which will reult in radiative uppreion. Following the procedure outlined in Ref [6] we evaluate the energy lo of gluon, E(L) a a function of length, L. The reult obtained with GB and preent gluon pectra are diplayed in Fig.. We oberve that the difference in E(L) between the GB pectra and the pectra derived in the preent work (with correction decribed above) i mall at lower L but grow up with increae in L. The pectrum of the radiated gluon in medium, derived byuingtheratiooftheamplitude quareoftheradiative proce gg ggg to that of the elatic proce, gg gg i given by, dn g d k dη = ( [ ] dng d [(+ t k dη GB + 5t t3 3) 3 + t 3t )k + ( 5 + t + 5t 3 )k )], (6) where η i the rapidity of the radiated gluon, the ubcript GB ha been ued to indicate the gluon pectrum obtained uing the approximation conidered in [0] (ee alo [7]) which i given by, [ ] dng d = C Aα k dη π where m D = q GB [(k q ) +m (7) D ], πα (T)(C A + NF )T/3, i the thermal ma of the gluon [8], N F i the number of flavor contributing in the gluon elf-energy loop, C A = 3 i the Caimir invariant for the SU(3) adjoint repreentation, α ithetemperature-dependenttrongcoupling[9]and q i the tranvere momentum tranfer. The thermal ma in the denominator of Eq. 7 ha been introduced to hield the infrared divergence ariing from the male intermediary gluon exchange. The energy lo of a gluon paing through a gluonic medium can now be calculated uing the gluon pectrum of Eq. 6. The energy lo per colliion can now be etimated a: ǫ = d k dη dn g d k dη k 0θ(Λ τ F ) θ(e k cohη), (8) where k 0 = k cohη i the energy of the radiated gluon and τ F i the formation time of the gluon. The firt θ- function in Eq. 8, involving Λ or interaction time, i introduced for the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. The LPM effect impoe retriction on the phaepaceoftheradiatedgluon, itmuthaveτ F (= cohη/k ) le than the mean free time, Λ. The gluon can be emitted for time cale larger than τ F []. The econd θ-function et the upper limit for the energy of the radiated gluon. To proceed further, we replace q by it average value evaluated a follow: where q = σ el m D σ el = m D dq dσ el dq dq q, (9) dσ el dq. (0) For dominant mall-angle cattering (t 0), dσ el dq πα = C i q. () C i i 9/, and /9 for gg, qg, and qq cattering. q i then obtained a, q = m D m D ln( m D ). () For, i.e. in the high-energy limit one can make the replacement t q [0]. In contrat to previou
3 work [, ] the value of i taken a 6ET [] allowing the poibility for the incident gluon to remain out of thermal equilibrium. With all the above ingredient we are now ready to evaluate energy lo (de/dx) of a fat gluon in a gluonic medium a follow: de dx = ǫ Λ. (3) The interaction rate, Λ ha been evaluated by uing the procedure imilar to []. We need to implement now the radiative uppreion of gluon due to it poible off-hellne (Fig. ). The energy lo ( E) of off-hell gluon of energy 5 GeV moving through a gluonic fluid of dimenion fm for the gluon pectrum derived in Ref. [], [] and in the preent work [obtained from Eq. 6, 8 and 3] normalized to that reulting from GB approximation ( E R ) are diplayed in Fig. 3. We oberve that with the correction term the value of E i enhanced by about 0% and 0% for T 300 MeV and 00 MeV, repectively, compared to the E obtained from the pectra of Ref. [] and []. Such difference may have important conequence on the heavy-ion phenomenology at RHIC and LHC colliion energie. In ummary we have evaluated the pectrum of the emitted gluon from the procee g+g g+g+g by relaxing ome of the approximation ued in recent calculation. The reult derived in the preent calculation ha been applied to evaluate ome phyical quantitie, e.g. energy lo of energetic parton in HIC and time cale for equilibration in gluonic plama. Reult obtained in the preent work have been compared with the earlier calculation [, ]. We find that the contribution from the previouly neglected term O(k ) and O(k0 ) in the matrix element play crucial role in heavy-ion phenomenology. The gluon pectrum obtained in Eq. 6 can be ued for other +g partonic procee alo..3. Ref. [] Ref. [] Preent E(L)(GeV) GB Preent L (fm) FIG.: Energy lo ofa5gevgluoninvacuumaafunction of path length. Appendix In thi appendix we derive Eq. 5 for the quare of the invariant amplitude for the radiative proce, gg ggg upto order O(k 0 ) and O( t3 3 ). Conider the reaction g(k )+g(k ) g(k 3 )+g(k )+g(k 5 ), () where k 5 i the four-momentum of the radiated gluon. The Mandeltam variable for the above proce are defined a = (k +k ), t = (k k 3 ) u = (k k ), = (k 3 +k ) t = (k k ), u = (k k 3 ). (5)
Becaue gluon male we can write k.k =, k.k 3 = t We alo have the relation k.k = u, k 3.k = k.k = t, k.k 3 = u. (6) k.k 5 = +t+u, k.k 5 = +t +u k 3.k 5 = +t +u For oft gluon emiion,, k.k 5 = +t+u. (7) +t+u+ +t +u = 0. (8) The matrix element quare of the radiative proce gg ggg i given by [3] M gg ggg = N 3 g6 c N Nc D [(35)+(35)+(35) + (53)+(53)+(53) + (35)+(35)+(35) + (35)+(35)+(35)], (9) where N c i the number of color, g = πα i the trong coupling, and N = (k.k ) +(k.k 3 ) +(k.k ) + (k.k 5 ) +(k.k 3 ) +(k.k ) +(k.k 5 ) + (k 3.k ) +(k 3.k 5 ) +(k.k 5 ), (0) D = (k.k )(k.k 3 )(k.k )(k.k 5 )(k.k 3 ) (k.k )(k.k 5 )(k 3.k )(k 3.k 5 )(k.k 5 ), () (ijklm) = (k i.k j )(k j.k k )(k k.k l )(k l.k m )(k m.k i ). () Simplifying Eq. 9 we get, M gg ggg = 6g 6 Nc 3 Nc N [ (+u+t)(+u +t ) [ tt + uu ] + (+u+t)(+u +t) [ tt + uu ] t (+u+t)(+u+t ) [ uu + ] u (+u+t)(+u +t) [ tt + ] u(+u +t )(+u+t ) [ tt + ] t(+u +t )(+u +t) [ uu + ]; (3) and N can now be written a N = 6 [ +t +u + +t +u + (+t+u) +(+t +u ) +(+t +u) + (+t+u ) ]. () For a oft gluon emiion (k 5 0), t t, u u. We can expre the tranvere momentum of the emitted gluon a k = (k.k 5 )(k.k 5 )/ = (+t+u)(+t +u ) = (+t+u) /. (5) Uing Eq. 3, and 5, the quare of the matrix element can be written a M gg ggg = 7 g6 ( +t +u + k ) k [ ( t + u ) t ( + u ) u ( t + )] = g ( 7 g )(+ t + u +k ) t t[+ u t t u u t u ] = g ( 9 g t )(3+3t +3u +6k ) [+ t u t t u u t u ] = g ( 9 g u t)(3(+ )+3t +6k ) [ (+ u u )t +( u u )t ] = g M gg gg (3(+ u )+3t +6k ) [( )(+ u u )t + ( u u )t ], (6)
5 where the ubcript GB tand for the approximation ued by Gunion and Bertch [0]. For the elatic proce, On implifying Eq. 6 we obtain, M gg ggg = g M gg gg M gg gg = 9 g t. (7) [(33 u +3u 3u3 3)(3t +3t u + 3 u t t 5 +3u 3 ) + (3 t u 3t u +3u t 3 u3 t 5 ) + (3 t t 3 u 3) (3 t5 t5 t6 t u 3)+(3u 3 u 5) + (6 k 6k u )(6k t 3 +6k t u ) + (6 k t u 6k t )]. (8) u3 In the propoed kinematic limit we et term which are linear in k to zero and keep term O( 0 ),O(k ), and O(k ) in M gg ggg. We alo neglect term O(t ) and higher order in the matrix element. To proceed further one need to expre the Mandeltam variable u in term of, t, and k by uing the following relation: k = (+t+u) u = k t u = ( k t) u = [( t )] u [+( t ) + ( t ) + ( t )3 + ( t ) + ( t ) (9) The binomial expanion of [( k t )] converge if ( k t ) <. For the kinematic limit mentioned above i.e. for k 0 and keeping term upto O( t3 ), the inequality ( k 3 t ) < i atified. We have checked that term beyond ( k t )5 in the expreion of u are not required for the kinematic limit under conideration. With all thee we get, u = [( t + t t3 3) + ( t + 3t )k + ( 3t + 6t 3 )k ]. (30) Similarly /u can be written a u = t [( + 3t t3 3 ) + ( 6t + t )k + ( 3 t + 30t 3 )k ]. (3) For the aumed kinematic condition u / can be expreed a follow: Similarly, and u = [(+ t + 6t + t3 3 ) ( + t + t )k + ( 6 + t + 6t 3 )k ]. (3) u 3 3 = [(+ 3t + 3t + t3 3) ( 3 + 6t + 3t )k + ( 3 + 3t )k ]; (33) u = [(+ t + t )( + t )k + k ]. (3) Putting Eq. 30 to 3 in 8 we get, M gg ggg = g M gg gg [(+ t + 5t t3 3) ( 3 + t 3t )k + ( 5 + t + 5t 3 )k )]. (35)
6 The term O(k ) and O(k0 ) contribute to the energy lo of the gluon in a gluonic plama and hence are important for heavy-ion phenomenology at RHIC and LHC energie.
