We consider both, the SUU SUU and the SUU SUU gauge group versions of the L model. We also show that the Goldstone bosons present in the model do not contribute to the effective potential at the one-loop level. Finally, by neglecting the contribution of higher dimensional operators, we discuss the restrictions that the new one-loop contributions set on the parameter space of the L model and the need to include higher loop corrections to the iggs potential. DOI:.3/PhysRevD PACS numbers: d,..Kk,.5.w I. INTRODUCTION The quadratically divergent contributions to the iggs mass and the electroweak precision observables imply different scales for physics beyond the standard model (SM), the first one below TeV, and the second above TeV. This is the so-called little hierarchy problem. An interesting attempt to solve it, inspired in an old suggestion by Georgi and Pais [], is the littlest iggs model (L) [] which is based on a SU5=SO5 nonsigma linear model (see [3,4] for recent reviews). Being a Goldstone boson (GB) associated to this spontaneous symmetry breaking, the iggs is massless in principle. owever one-loop corrections produce a logarithmically divergent iggs mass that could be compatible with the present experimental bound of about GeV. The other GBs present in the model get quadratically divergent masses at the one-loop level becoming very massive or give masses to the SM and other additional gauge bosons present in the model through the iggs mechanism. All of these new states could give rise to a very rich phenomenology that could be proved at the CERN Large adron Collider (LC) [5]. From the L model it is possible, at least in principle, to compute the iggs low-energy effective potential. Obviously this effective potential should reproduce the form of the SM potential, i.e.: V eff y y ; () where ; is the SM iggs doublet and and are the well-known iggs mass and iggs self-coupling parameters. Notice that, in order to have spontaneous symmetry breaking of the electroweak symmetry, must be negative and must be positive to have a welldefined energy minimum. In addition these parameters should reproduce the SM relation m v where m is the iggs mass and v is the vacuum expectation value (vev). In principle and receive contributions from fermion, gauge boson, and scalar loops, besides others that could come from the ultraviolet completion of the L model [6]. In this work we continue our program consisting of the computation of the relevant terms of the iggs lowenergy effective potential and their phenomenological consequences including new restrictions on the parameter space of the L model. In particular we will study the consistency of the electroweak symmetry breaking with the present experimental data in the case in which, for the sake of simplicity, one neglects the contribution of higher dimensional operators coming from the ultraviolet completion of the L model that are generically present. In [7] we obtained the one-loop contribution coming from the third generation quarks t and b plus the T quark present in the L model. This contribution is essential since it provides the right positive sign for. Other contributions lead to a negative sign for. ere we complete the one-loop computation of the iggs potential by including also gauge bosons and clarifying the role of the GB at this level. We also discuss the validity of the oneloop potential and the necessity of including some important higher loop contributions to reproduce the expected value of the iggs mass. The paper is organized as follows: In Sec. II we briefly review the L model and set the notation. In Sec. III we study the L model as a gauged nonlinear sigma model (NLSM). In particular we pay attention to the problem of the quartic divergencies appearing when a cutoff is used to regulate the divergences of the model and we show how they cancel at the one-loop level. We also obtain the gauge fixing and Faddeev-Popov terms appropriate for the calculation of the different gauge boson loops appearing later in our computations. In Sec. IV we compute the effective potential at the one-loop level. Section V is devoted to a discussion of our results and the constraints that our com =7=75(8)=8357() The American Physical Society

VI we present the main conclusions of this paper and the prospects for future work. II. SETTING OF TE LITTLEST IGGS MODEL As is well know the low-energy dynamics of the L model can be described by a SUU SU U gauged nonlinear sigma model based on the coset K G= SU5=SO5. The Goldstone boson fields can be disposed in a 5 5 matrix given by: e i=f ; () A (3) has the proper SU5 symmetry breaking structure with being the unit matrix, and pi y y B pi i C A pi T T p diag; ; 4; ; : (4) ere ; is the SM iggs doublet, is the real scalar, and and are the real triplet and the complex triplet, respectively: p! p ; (5) and p! p : (6) The gauged nonlinear sigma model Lagrangian describing the low-energy GB and gauge boson dynamics is given by L f 8 trd D y : (7) The covariant derivative is defined as i X i X j j g j W a j Qa j QaT j g j B jy j Yj T ; (8) where g and g are the gauge couplings, Q a ij a ij =, for i; j ;, Q a ij a ij = for i; j 4; 5, and zero otherwise, Y diag3; 3; ; ; = and Y diag; ; ; 3; 3=. Diagonalizing the gauge boson mass matrix in this Lagrangian one realizes that the W and B SM gauge bosons are massless and the W and B gauge bosons have masses: q q M W f g p g =; M B f g g = : (9) The gauge bosons mass eigenstates are defined such as W a c W a s W a; Wa s W a c W a; () where g s sin q ; c cos q g g g g () and B c B s B ; B s B c W () with s g sin q ; c cos q : g g g g g g (3) A modified version of the L model, such that the gauge subgroup of SU5 is SUSUU Y rather than SUU Y, has also been introduced [8]. In this case, the covariant derivative is defined as: i X j g j W a j Qa j QaT j ig BY Y T ; (4) where the generators Q a j are the same as in the previous case, and Y diag; ; ; ;. The field content of the matrix in is the same as in the L model but there is no B now. We consider in our analysis these two different models: the original L with two U groups (Model I) and the other one with just one U group (Model II). Then, at the tree level, the SU L U Y SM gauge group remains unbroken. The spontaneous symmetry breaking of this group is expected to be produced in principle radiatively, mainly due to the effect of the virtual quark fields from the third generation, which give rise to an appropriate effective potential for the SM iggs doublet. These quarks will initially be denoted by u and b and the additional vectorlike quark will be denoted by U. The interactions between these fermions and the Goldstone bosons are given by the Yukawa Lagrangian: L YK f u R mn ijk im jn Lk f U R U L :c:; where m; n 4, 5,i; j,,3,and (5) 8357-

Notice that, contrary to the quark T which is massive already at this level, the t quark is massless and acquires mass only when the electroweak symmetry is broken. Then, the Yukawa Lagrangian can be written as with L Yuk R ^I 3x3 L :c:; (9) t b A T and ^I 3x3 the iggs-quark interaction matrix is given by p p c c c y f ^I p p s C A; s s y f () where and are functions on y =f whose expansion starts as y f y f R y 3f...; y... 3f Thus the complete Lagrangian for the quarks is: () L L L Yuk R i6@ M ^I L :c: () with M diag; ;m T. Since we are interested in the computation of the contribution to the SM iggs effective potential, we can set. III. TE LITTLEST IGGS MODEL AS A NONLINEAR SIGMA MODEL A. Quartic divergences In order to compute the contributions to the iggs potential coming from scalar and gauge boson loops it is useful to study the L model as a particular case of gauged NLSM based on the coset K G= SU5=SO5 (see [9] for a review on gauged NLSM). To start with we will turn off the gauge interactions by taking g i. Then the L Lagrangian is L f 8 y : (3) This Lagrangian can be written also as a NLSM Lagrangian ; (4) where are Gaussian coordinates on K and the K metric is defined as y tr : This metric can be split as g ; (6) where ab 8 3!f trt T T T T T T T T T T T O 4 8 3!f O 4 (7) and we have written as T with the T matrices normalized so that trt T. Now we consider the coupling of the NLSM with any other field which for simplicity will be taken to be a real scalar. The corresponding action can be written as S; S S ;. The effective action for the field can be obtained by integrating out the GB fields. owever this integration is not trivial at all. Because of the geometrical nature of the NLSM, not only its action, but also the integration measure, must be G invariant and covariant in the K coset sense []. Thus the proper effective action is given by: The measure factor with e i Z p d g e is; : (8) p g can now be exponentiated to find e i Z de is; (9)

Then, in order to take into account the invariant measure effects in the NLSM one needs to add to the classical Lagrangian the term 4 S! S (34) whenever one is not using dimensional regularization. It is not difficult to see that this term is formally of the same order as the one-loop contributions. On the other hand the GB contribution to the iggs effective potential is defined as where is a constant field and eff Z dxv eff ; (35) e i eff Z d p g e is (36) with eff : (37) At the one-loop level the last equation can be written as S (38) and then the NLSM action can be expanded as S S Z dxdy x S x y y: (39) Therefore we have eff S i Tr log GO...; (4) In order to compute the iggs effective action we only need to consider the case cte which and then we have Therefore we get O xy x xy : (43) eff i k Tr k OG k... (44) k or eff i Z dx tr (45) This effective action has exactly the same form as the measure term discussed above so finally we get eff : (46) Therefore we arrive at the important conclusion that the GB do not contribute to the iggs potential in any NLSM at the one-loop level and, in particular, this is the case for the SU5=SO5 L model. B. Gauge fixing and the Faddeev-Popov terms In the following we will concentrate on the gauge bosons in order to be able to compute their contribution to the iggs effective potential. Thus we turn on again the gauge boson fields in the NLSM: L f 8 trd D y : (47) The covariant derivative can be written in terms of the mass eigenstates as igwq a a L QaT L ig R W a Q a R QaT R ig B Y Y T ig B Y Y T ; (48) where the different couplings and generators are defined as

Notice that g R and g are functions of the mixing angles (for the SU group) and (for the U group). Expanding the Lagrangian we obtain the gauge and GB mixed terms L W L B ; L W W a a ; (5) L B B ; p where = p, i =, 3, and are the GB which will give masses to the heavy gauge bosons W and B. Following the standard Faddeev- Popov procedure it is not difficult to find the gauge fixing and the ghost Lagrangian. The first one is given by L W a M W B M W B ; (5) which cancels the unwanted mixing terms (5) and makes the propagator well defined. For a gauge boson A a the Faddeev-Popov Lagrangian is where L FP Z dyc a x fa x b y cb y; (5) f a A a ; A a M A a : (53) In the general case the effect of the gauge transformations on the GB and the gauge boson fields A a will be and a a x (54) A a A a gc abc b A c ; (55) where a are the Killing vectors corresponding to the gauge symmetry on the coset and C abc are the structure constants. The covariant derivative is defined as g a A a (56) so that the gauge fixing term is f a A a ; A a g a (57) and the Faddeev-Popov Lagrangian can be written as L FP c a c a gc abc c c b A c g a b c a c b : (58) Then ghost-gb interaction is given by L g a b c a c b : (59) Therefore if we work in the Landau gauge, that is, there are no ghost-gb interactions. This fact will be useful later for the computation of the gauge boson contribution to the iggs effective potential. In this gauge the quadratic part of the gauge boson Lagrangian is just L ~Ig ; (6) where stands for any of the gauge bosons W a ;W a ;B ;B ; (6) which are the mass matrix eigenstates with masses M M W 33 ; 33 ;M B ; ; (6) and ~I 66 is the interaction matrix between the gauge bosons and the iggs doublet, given in Appendix A. IV. TE EFFECTIVE POTENTIAL In order to obtain the one-loop iggs effective potential we consider constant iggs fields, Thus we have S eff Z dxv eff : (63) Remember that we found that GB do not contribute to this effective potential at the one-loop level. In addition, by using the Landau gauge, we do not have to consider any ghost field at this level. Then the effective action is obtained just by integrating out the b, t, and T fermions and the W, W, B, and B gauge bosons with e is eff Z dd de is;; ; (64) S; ; Z L L : (65) By using standard techniques (see for instance [9]) the oneloop effective action can be written as
6 DOBADO, TABARES-CELUCI, AND PEÑARANDA PYSICAL REVIEW D 75, 8357 (7) S eff Z S f S g : (66) f N c 4 t T f log m T And then, the effective potential can be written as m T 5 f 3 t T 4 4t 4 T t V eff V f V g ; (67) 4 m T T m T f t T 4 4 t log m ; where V f and V g are the fermionic and gauge boson contribution to the iggs effective potential, respectively. The general form of the effective potential is where N c is the number of colors and, t and T (7) are, V eff y y...; (68) respectively, the SM top Yukawa coupling and the heavy top Yukawa coupling, given by where we keep only the first two terms which are the relevant ones for the electroweak symmetry breaking and, in particular, for the computation of the iggs mass. Obviously, at the one-loop level the and the parameters have separated contributions from the fermionic and the gauge sector, f g; f g : (69) A. Fermionic contribution In this case the one-loop computation is exact since the action is quadratic in the fermionic fields corresponding to the t, b, and T quarks. Details of the computation of the fermionic contribution to the effective action and the iggs effective potential parameters, f and f, are given in [7] (see Fig. for the contributing Feynman diagrams). For the purpose of illustration and the final discussion of this paper, we summarize here the fermionic contribution at one-loop level to these iggs potential parameters: f N m T t c 4 log m T (7) t q ; T q : (7) B. Gauge boson contributions ere we concentrate in the gauge boson contribution at the one-loop level to the iggs effective action, S g.we use the Landau gauge for the reasons discussed above. NUMERICAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION In this section we discuss the previous results and make some comments on the constraints that they could impose on the L parameter space in order to reproduce the SM iggs potential. It is well known that this potential has a minimum when v. Furthermore, is forced by data to be at most of order GeV. By imposing these conditions we can obtain the corresponding allowed region of the parameter space of the L model. For example, in [7] we have obtained that the lowest allowed value of was of order 5 GeV considering only the third generation quark sector. Therefore additional contributions are required. In this work we have computed the complete oneloop contributions to the iggs potential in the framework of the L model. owever we also found that higher-loop scalar contributions are still needed in order to get a iggs mass light enough to be compatible with the experimental constraints. If we want to study the allowed region of the parameter space in these models, we should also take into account other constraints imposed by requiring the consistency of the L models with electroweak precision data. There exist several studies of the corrections to electroweak precision observables in the little iggs models, exploring whether there are regions of the parameter space in which the model is consistent with data [3 5,8, 5]. In Model I with a gauge group SUSUUU one has a multiplet of heavy SU gauge bosons and a heavy U gauge boson. The last one leads to large electroweak corrections and some problems with the direct observational bounds on Z bosons from Tevatron [,]. Then, a very strong bound on the symmetry breaking scale f, f> 4 TeV at 95% C.L., is found []. This bound is lowered to TeV for some region of the parameter space [] by gauging only SUSUU (Model II). In the following, we will adopt this model and we consider both f about TeV and 4 TeV in the numerical analysis. For Model II the obtained and depend on the heavy top mass m T, the heavy gauge-boson mass M W, the coupling constant T, the symmetry breaking scale f, and the cutoff. In addition, one has the mixing angles (for the SU group). Since we have only one U group, we do not have to consider either M B or the mixing angle and g. These L model parameters can be bounded as follows: From the top mass it is possible to set the bounds on the couplings, m t =v or m t =v [5]. As a consequence, we get the bound T * :5 [7]. On the other hand, in order to avoid a large amount of fine-tuning in the iggs potential one has to require m T * :5 TeV [,8]. If m T is greater than about TeV, the cancellation of the oneloop quadratic divergences from the top sector to the iggs boson mass requires some tuning to give an answer for m below GeV. This cancellation depends on the relation q m T f. Since m T grows linearly with f, then f should be lesser than about TeV [7]. Finally, is restricted by the condition 4f [6]. Taking into account these restrictions on the parameters T, f, and,we set as first the following ranges: :5 < T <, :8 TeV < f< TeV (which implies a heavy top mass of about.5 TeV) and accordingly TeV < < TeV. We have checked that these ranges of the parameters are compatible with the predictions for corrections to the best-measured observables, the on-shell mass of the W, the effective mixing angle in Z decay asymmetries, and the leptonic width of the Z, as given in [8]. In the above paper the corrections from heavy gauge bosons are included but those possible corrections coming from a vev of the scalar SU triplet are not considered. A more detailed analysis can be found in []. Then, we also include in our numerical analysis a discussion on the allowed region of the L parameter space for the case of f 4 TeV. As is established in [,], this value of the symmetry breaking scale f is also allowed by the precision electroweak observables. Notice that this value of f implies that m T is always greater than 5.7 TeV, when T > :5. A fine-tuning of.8% is estimated
9 IGGS EFFECTIVE POTENTIAL IN TE LITTLEST... PYSICAL REVIEW D 75, 8357 (7) 3 M W [ TeV] f [TeV].95 for a iggs mass of GeV []. Besides, one gets M W > :6 TeV. Let us discuss now briefly how the heavy gauge boson masses depend on mixing angles. We know that M W is of the order of f TeV (see Eq. (9)) and from these equations we can obtain restrictions on the mixing angles. In Fig. 3 we show the dependence of M W on cos and the scale f. We found that :5 < cos <:8 implies masses smaller than.6 TeV and then these values for cos can be ruled out. From this result we get the preferred ranges: cos <:5 or cos >:7. Taking into account the above bounds on the L model parameters we now focus on obtaining the corresponding values according to our previous one-loop computation which includes both, the fermionic and gauge boson contributions. We find that, in the case of Model II, the lowest allowed value for is :34 TeV being T :7, f :8 TeV, :95 TeV, and cos :.owever,asis..6 cosφ.4 FIG. 3 (color online). M W as a function of cos and f, with :8 TeV <f< TeV..8 discussed in [7], it is also needed to add in principle the additional constraint v. Then in Fig. 4 we show as an example the allowed regions for Model II. Two different regions can be found. This is due to the mixing angle coming from the heavy gauge boson mass. In this case the lowest value for is :49 TeV corresponding to T :55, f :95 TeV, TeV, and cos :47. Therefore it is clear that the condition v is relevant in order to constrain the possible values of the L model parameters. A similar analysis has been done for f 4 TeV. The results are shown in Fig. 5. The allowed region is smaller in this case. The reason for obtaining just some points of the parameter space allowed by the condition v is that has a logarithmical dependence on the energy scale and a linear dependence on f coming from the new heavy particle masses, while depends quadratically on =4f. Therefore, greater values of lead to a disadvantageous region for v. In this case the lowest value for is :96 TeV corresponding to T :68, f 4 TeV, 5 TeV, and cos :86. From the above results, it is clear that it is difficult to satisfy the condition v with about GeV, as expected by the precision electroweak measurements [7]. We also show in Fig. 6 the contours of the viable regions in the T -f plane with the condition v. The values of the mixing angle are fixed to the values cos : (top panel) and cos :7 (bottom panel). We check that the results for cos close to, i.e. cos :995, are similar to the ones for cos :. The condition & 4f is imposed. One can see that values of f around 3 TeVare the preferred ones for our selected choices of the L parameters. owever the values are higher than about 35 GeV for all cases. Therefore, it is clear that it is not enough to consider the one-loop effective potential of the L model. cosψ cosψ λ T Λ [TeV] λ T Λ [TeV] FIG. 4. CONCLUSIONS In this work we have completed the computation of the one-loop effective iggs potential in the context of two versions (Model I and Model II) of the L model. In particular we have obtained the values of the radiatively generated and parameters. Our computation includes the effect of virtual heavy quarks t, b, and T, together with the heavy and electroweak gauge bosons present in the L model. We have also clarified the role of the GB when a cutoff is used to regulate the ultraviolet divergencies. These GB do not contribute to the iggs effective potential at the one-loop level but they do at higher orders. The values of and that we get have the right signs and are compatible in principle with all the phenomenological constraints set on the L model parameter space. owever the values found for the parameter are too high to be compatible with the expected iggs mass, which should not be larger than about GeV according to the electroweak precision data. This problem is even worse if one takes into account the relation v which must hold on the and parameters of the effective iggs potential to reproduce the SM. As a conclusion the lowenergy, one-loop effective potential of the L model cannot reproduce the SM potential with a low enough iggs mass to agree with the standard expectations. owever there are some indications suggesting that higher order GB loops could reduce the iggs boson mass so that complete compatibility with the experimental constraints can be obtained. Work is in progress in order to check if this is really the case [8].
