5 Situation Polperro is one of the most picturesque and unspoilt fishing villages on the south Cornish coast. The village itself hides inside a narrow harbour entrance protected by hills. The centre of this much photographed village is without a doubt the historic harbour at the bottom of the village. Smuggling is understood to have prospered since the 12th century when Polperro first developed as a port. By the late 18th century, much of the success of the smuggling trade through Polperro was controlled by Zephaniah Job ( ), a local merchant who became known as The Smuggler s Banker. Fishing was traditionally the principal occupation of Polperro families. For centuries the village has been a pilchard fishing and processing port, exporting throughout Europe. Several small commercial fishing vessels that still operate from the harbour catching flatfish, scallops, crabs, monkfish, ray, pollock, bass and cod. Fresh fish and seafood is available for purchase from time to time from the fresh fish and seafood is available for purchase at the quayside from time to time. The village is largely protected by preservation orders which ensure that the original character and appearance of its buildings are not changed too much one has to obtain permission to change the colour of paint on some of the houses. The coastline which Polperro is set on is part of an 80 mile stretch known as the South Cornwall Heritage Coast, with beautiful walks extending from from Polperro to Talland Bay in the east or Lansallos in the west, both of which enjoy their own beaches. Communications to and from Cornwall have improved greatly in recent years; the A38 is now largely dual carriageway to the M5 at Exeter and provides a fast road access to within a few miles of Polperro. There is a mainline rail link to London at nearby Liskeard, which includes an overnight sleeper service.
6 History Seaways was once the home of the Doctor Zhivago actress Rita Tushingham who lived there in the 1970s with her husband Terry Bicknell and daughter Dodonna. They bought Seaways having spent their honeymoon in Polperro in The Property Seaways occupies a truly idyllic setting, nestled in the cliff face with breathtaking views out to sea, over the harbour and historic fishing village. Built of stone and painted white with sky blue shutters creating a picture postcard image, one that could be equally at home on the French or Italian Riviera. The entrance to the house is under a covered porch with a seating area looking out over the sea. This stunning vista can be enjoyed from the principal reception rooms and all three first floor bedrooms. The sitting room is a fantastic space with an inviting wood burner set within a marble fireplace. The room is spacious with the double height ceiling looking up at the galleried area above that is currently used as a gym. The large double height window is another impressive feature looking out to the west and providing an abundance of natural light. The house was lovingly renovated by the current owners creating a luxury family holiday home. The bespoke walnut kitchen is a chef s dream with a double AGA, Bosch oven/grill and a colourful glass splash back. This is a superb entertaining space with double doors leading out to the patio to sit and enjoy your meal. The master bedroom has a fabulous en suite bathroom with a freestanding bath and French doors leading out to a balcony enjoying the spectacular views. The other two bedrooms on the first floor share the family bathroom with its quirky pebble floor and Jacuzzi/Whirlpool bath. The attic apartment on the second floor is a great space for children or as a private space for adults. There are two main rooms, with further sleeping areas off, and a large, luxurious bathroom with a free-standing bath and separate shower.

11 Gardens & Grounds There is a great sense of privacy and tranquillity in the grounds of Seaways. The marvellous heated swimming pool and hot tub are sheltered by a curved wall with views over the sea and harbour to the south. The landscaped gardens offer various private terraces from which you can enjoy the sublime views including two barbecue areas and a pond. From the bottom of the terrace, a private path leads you down to The Warren and into the village itself. Unusually for Polperro, Seaways has a double garage and private parking area which is accessed through nearby Killigarth, with a private pathway leading down to the house. Note: Access to Seaways is a steep, stepped pathway and it is therefore unsuitable for the disabled, infirm or walking impaired. Holiday Letting Seaways has been occasionally holiday let by the present owners with weekly rental incomes in excess of Please refer to for tariff information. Directions From Plymouth take the A38 into Cornwall over the Tamar Bridge and then turn left at Trerulefoot roundabout for Looe and Polperro. Follow the A387 from Looe to Polperro. Before you reach the hill descending to Polperro you will see a left hand turning signposted to Killigarth. Follow this road all the way to the school (this road is single track in places with passing areas and a sharp right hand bend before the school). As you drive along level with the school car park exit (by the red post box) you will see a turning on your left. Take this road into Brentfield Estate, (a large house called Gables on your right) drive straight down the hill and up the other side then, at the top of the hill, turn right. After the last house on the left you will enter an open field and the road is unsurfaced but turn left and follow the road around and down.
