1 International Symposium on Meteotsunamis 30th Anniversary of the Great Flood of Vela Luka (21 June 1978) Vela Luka, Croatia, June 2008 Organised by The City of Vela Luka Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, Split Also supported by Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts Second Circular
2 GENERAL INFORMATION The City of Vela Luka, Croatia and the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split, are organising International symposium on meteotsunamis, on the 30th anniversary of the devastating flood of Vela Luka, which occurred on 21 June The Symposium will be held in Vela Luka on 19, 20 and 21 June The Symposium will bring together witnesses of the devastating Vela Luka flood and other Adriatic communities which were affected by the same phenomenon in the past, as well as a number of Croatian, European and worldwide scientist which are investigating this phenomenon in various places around the world. The Symposium will comprise four major parts. The videos and photos recorded during the Vela Luka flood and its aftermath, as well as the estimated effects and damage and testimonies of local people and witnesses, will be presented at the beginning of the Symposium. Following that two scientific sessions will aim to formulate and quantify the physical background for the observed phenomenon, including the present knowledge and conducted research in various places affected by meteotsunamis. Finally, the round table will try to outline the future research directions in the investigation of this phenomenon, their impact on the coastal areas, future hazard and risk assessment studies, as well as the mitigation measures, including a warning system dedicated to this phenomenon. THE VENUE The Workshop will be held at the Cultural Centre of the City of Vela Luka (see the map). Vela Luka is situated on the western part of the Island of Korčula, Croatia. It is a small town situated in a deep and large bay, surrounded by many coves, whose shores are covered by fig trees, vineyards, olive trees and pines, as they mildly descend towards the sea. With its 4500 residents, Vela Luka is the second largest island town among the islands in the Adriatic Sea and a safe port and anchorage for sailors. Broad panoramic views, mild Mediterranean climate, crystal-blue sea, interesting and rich cultural heritage, various locations for sport and recreation, entertaining programs, but above all its kind and friendly locals, make Vela Luka an attractive tourist destination. More about Vela Luka and Croatia can be found at: TRAVEL INFORMATION Vela Luka can be reached by the ferry and catamaran lines from Split (more on The City of Split has the international airport ( well served by a number of domestic and international airlines, and connected to the Split harbour by the airport bus lines.
