The Cambodian National Petroleum Authority (CNPA) Presentation on CCS Opportunities in Cambodia By Houy Vutha Prepared by Mr. Le Sambath & Dr. Seng Cheaseth

Geological Resources for CO2 Storage Potential in Cambodia

Outline Introduction to CCS Potential Basins o Offshore: Khmer Basin (including Kampong Saom Sub-basin) o Onshore: Tonle Sap Basin Geological Resource Estimation for CCS o Oil and gas reservoir o Deep (saline) aquifer Methods of the Research o Geological modeling ( e.g. Saline aquifers reservoir) o What data have we prepare Conclusion on CCS

Oil and gas Exploration Oil and gas exploration is undertaken by oil companies, which is contracted by the government in form of PSCs. According to the contract between the oil companies and the government, exploration information is shared between the two parties. A copy of the surveys/exploration results in both digital and hardcopy formats is kept at CNPA. As all oil companies are in the stage of exploration, no gas storage facilities are being development or planned.

Petroleum Concession Blocks in Cambodia

Petroleum Basins in Cambodia 8 sedimentary basins capable of containing petroleum that are either wholly or partially located in Cambodia. 1. Khmer Basin 2. Kompong Som Basin 3. Mekong Basin 4. Chhung Basin 5. Preah Basin 6. Tonle Sap Basin 7. Khorat Basin 8. Pattani Basin

potential area

Oil and gas reservoirs (from Vysotsky et al. 1994)

Uneconomic Prone Oil main phase End of oil generation

Potential Basin for CCS Offshore Basins (window depth: m) o Khmer basin o Kampong Saom basin o m part of basins has potential for storage of CO2 (deep saline aquifers) 65% HC of country occurs in the offshore basin o HC may include high CO2 content Need to be separated for HC production o Country HC reserve is about 0.6 to 0.8 billion ton oil equivalent o HC reservoirs could be future potential for CO2 storage after depletion

Geological Resources Estimation for CCS Preliminary Estimation on Effective CO2 Storage Capacity (Gt)

Methods for safe underground storage of CO2 From IEA GHG Weyburn CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project, Summary Report

Reservoir (Geologic) Model and Numerical Fluid Flow Simulation Geological Modeling (Petrel system) o Seismic data (shallow part) o Well data (shallow part) o Window depth approximately from 800 to 1500 m Numerical Simulation (Eclipse system) o Prediction of injected gas in reservoir

Geologic model of Weyburn CO2 Project site, Canada Aquifer: a body of permeable rock that can contain or transmit groundwater Aquitard: a body of impermeable rock IEA GHG Weyburn CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project, Summary Report

What Data have we prepare? For reservoir (geology) model: o Seismic data (shallow part) o Well data (shallow part) o Window depth approximately from 800 to 1500 m For prediction (numerical simulation) model: o Aquifer rock data (porosity, permeability etc) o Rock type data (incl. seal rocks) o (Underground conditions, i.e. pressure & temp) Both are for initial model for potential CO2 storage in Cambodia

Conclusion on CCS In Cambodia, CCS program as a mean to solve the Climate Change issue and it s a new thing for Cambodia. Nevertheless, Cambodia, as a member of the world community, has the will to join with other countries in fighting climate change. Cambodia appreciates and sincerely welcomes all sponsors who are wishing to cooperate in CCS program in Cambodia. Kyoto University has planned to study CCS Potential in offshore Cambodia.
