59 Summary The visit was requested by the DOE to support their on-going preparation for the 1 st Philippine Petroleum Contracting Round (PCR1). The discussions and exercises covered basic petroleum economy, elements in a fiscal regime, economic modeling, and sensitivity modeling. The knowledge learned from the exercises was very useful for DOE s preparation of the PCR1.

60 ANNEX 24 2 ND Expert Visit to the PPM Philippines: Khun Supaporn Pisutha-Arnond PTTEP, Thailand Course on the Application of Organic Geochemistry to Source Rock Appraisal and Hydrocarbon Characteristics September 2004 DOE Audio Visual Room, Taguig City, Metro Manila Objectives: Regarding to the evaluation of the petroleum opportunities, most geoscientists spend most of their time considering reservoir rocks and trapping configurations. Today there is an awareness of the critical importance of the presence and recognition source rocks, which are non-reservoir rocks. The objectives of this lecture are: - To review the fundamental principles of petroleum geochemistry of source rocks and hydrocarbon generations, - To demonstrate the direct application of source rock geochemistry to prospect evaluation, and - To study using the database in Philippines to gain the knowledge of geochemistry. Course Program The course is planned for 2 days during September th September 2004: To review the fundamental principles of petroleum geochemistry of source rocks and hydrocarbon generations - To demonstrate the direct application of source rock geochemistry to prospect evaluation. 15 th September 2004: Workshop: using the database in Phillippines, group works together to gain the knowledge of geochemistry and to evaluate the source rocks in economic and practical approach.

61 Expected outcome/output It is understood that most petroleum geologists have been exposed to the petroleum geochemistry to some extent. But most the formal classes are however very academic. This lecture is planned to present the most important and practical aspects of petroleum geochemistry in application to the prospect evaluation. At the end of the course, the participants should be able to plan for data acquired and evaluate source rocks potentials and hydrocarbon prospectivity of the basin. The lecturer: Ms Supaporn Pisutha-Arnond Background of the lecturer Ms Supaporn Pisutha-Arnond is a senior geologist at PTT Exploration and Production Public Co. Ltd (PTTEP), Bangkok, Thailand. She obtained her BSc degree in Geology from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand in She served at Geological Survey of Thailand as a palaeontologist for many years. Her career in petroleum industry began when she joined Schlumberger S.A., Thailand in 1983 where she became Log Analyst specialized in shaly sand interpretation. After 3 years in Schlumberger S.A., Thailand she had worked with BP Development (Thailand Branch) for 7 years before being transferred to PTTEP. At PTTEP she was assigned to study on geochemistry. She has gained geochemistry experiences from working in an oil field, onshore Thailand and gas field offshore Thailand. LIST OF PARTICIPANTS Agency/Company 1. Editha S. Abangan DOE 2. Guillermo H. 62 Summary Ms. Supaporn Pisutha-Arnond, a senior geologist of PTTEP reviewed the fundamental principles of petroleum geochemistry of source rocks and hydrocarbon generations and demonstrated the direct application of source rock geochemistry to prospect evaluation. She also presented how petroleum geochemistry studies have helped her company in the evaluation of the prospects and plays. The discussions and exercises used Philippine data and that helped the DOE technical staff, particularly those members of the PPM Team, in their assessment of the potential of Sulu Sea region, the case study area.

TOPIC : Seismic Expression And Configuration The seismic expression and configuration are discussed which include- mounded facies; parallel, continuous; divergent, discontinuous; hummocky; oblique, sigmoidal and shingled clionoforms, weak reflectors and reflection free. The correlation of each seismic facies to lithofacies is discussed. Participants are given an exercise to describe the seismic facies and interpret its lithofacies and associated depositional setting. TOPIC : Seismic Stratigraphic Interpretation Participants are taught how to correlate and interpret seismic facies. Participants are given an exercise to correlate and interpret the seismic facies and structural styles. The exercise includes identification of reflection terminations, major surfaces and seismic facies and structural styles. 60 minutes Robert 60 minutes Robert 180 minutes Othman Ramlee Lecture Q & A Exercise Lecture Q & A Exercise Lecture Q & A Exercise LCD Handouts LCD Handouts LCD Handouts LESSON OBJECTIVE : at the end of the lesson, learners will be able to: { identify and interpret flooding surfaces and parasequence boundaries from cores and outcrops { integrate biostratigraphic, core and outcrop data into the sequence stratigraphic interpretation { interpret, correlate and map the sequences/parasequences and identify new hydrocarbon plays, prospects and untested reservoirs Interpretation, Correlation And Mapping Of Seqeuences/Parasequences Day 4 Level 1/2 TOPICS/SUB- DURATION/ LEARNING TOPICS/INSTRUCTION/FACILITATION INSTRUCTORS STRATEGIES TOPIC : Identification Of 120 minutes Lecture Sequences/Parasequences Q & A INSTRUCTION/FACILITATION : Exercise Participants are taught how to interpret flooding surfaces and parasequence boundaries from cores, outcrops and biostratigraphic data. The participants will analyse the log motifs, mark the stacking patterns and interpret the parasequences and correlate the systems tracts on the logs. The seismic facies has to be analysed too. The sedimentary packages must be interpreted, delineated and correlated to create a chronostratigraphic cross-section. Play fairway maps of the various reservoir packages must be generated to define any untested potential. 77 Summary: e The expert visit covered presentations of Norwegian experiences, technologies on IOR and EOR- supported by video presentations, and group discussions on specific issues and challenges faced by the DOE related to reservoir management. In addition to the participants from DOE and PNOC, other CCOP Member Countries sent their experts to learn and share their experiences on reservoir management issues. The activity helped the Philippine team in their assessment of the petroleum potential of the Sulu Sea Region, the case study area, and also issues related to the Malampaya gas field s oil leg, the development of which has been a big challenge for the DOE.
