3 GEO-REF Information Eco-Efficient Urban Infrastructure, Platform for Disaster Management and Green & Livable Cities ESCAP Regional Arm of the United Nations The regional development arm of the United Nations for the Asia-Pacific region -1 of the 5 United Nations regional commissions 62 Governments 58 within the region, i.e., from Turkey in the west to Kiribati in the east, and from the Russian Federation in the north to New Zealand in the south The largest United Nations body/commission serving the Asia-Pacific region (in terms of population & land area) with 600 staff (about 200 P-staff) Established in 1947 with its headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand since 1949, ESCAP seeks to overcome some of the region s greatest challenges.

6 ESCAP Work Focus The promotion of inclusive and sustainable economic and social development in Asia and the Pacific, with the overall goal of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (until 2015), along with other internationally agreed development goals inc. RIO+20 outcome, Sustainable Development Goals (after 2015). 15 Key elements of the KECF project About KECF Eco-Efficient Urban Infrastructure, and Green & Livable Cities - Established 1987, the Korea-ESCAP Cooperation Fund (KECF) is an important instrument to enable ESCAP to build national capacities in Asia and the Pacific. - As one of the key activities in the KECF, the project entitled Pilot implementation of the low carbon green growth roadmap for Asia and the Pacific has been proposed. (targeting: Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines and ASEAN countries); - Beneficiaries: National, regional as well as local policy makers from relevant ministries such as, environment, urban development, local government authorities Eco-Efficient Slide 15/ Urban Infrastructure, and Seoul, Green & Livable May Cities 2011

18 Eco-Efficient GEO-REF Information Water Urban Infrastructure, Platform and Green for Disaster & Livable Management Cities Organization of National Workshop Title: Sustainable urban and industry development in Mongolia; Venue: Ulaanbaatar Hotel, Ulaanbaatar, August Objectives: i. focus on the prospects of greening industries through energy and water efficiencies including the application of 3R principles (reduce, reuse and recycle) in the context of rapid urbanization, particularly in Ulaanbaatar; ii. discuss current national policies including green development policy, issues/challenges for greening industries and sustainable urban development with focus on energy and water issues in Mongolia particularly in and around Ulaanbaatar; iii. exchange knowledge and experiences; and iv. discuss ways and means; and develop a set of recommendations for deliberation by the Government of Mongolia towards greening industries and sustainable urban development. The target groups: relevant government officials, experts on integrated resources management/eco-efficient energy-water infrastructure, industry and urban development.
