1 2017 Student employment in Geoscience
2 Kearl oil sands mining operation Imperial Oil is the majority owner and operator of the Kearl Oil Sands mine in NE Alberta. Bitumen production started in 2013 and the mine is approved to produce up to 345,000 barrels of bitumen per day with a life of mine of over 35 years. Kearl is a fly-in, fly-out operation and offers opportunities for geoscientists to work both at site and at Imperial s headquarters in Calgary. Kearl Geoscience is responsible for the timely and accurate characterization of the subsurface, creating a predictive framework that forms the basis for all dewatering and earthworks activity. This includes characterization of the near-surface Quaternary sediments (an important source of sand and gravel that are essential to mine operations), the bitumen-bearing fluvial deposits of the McMurray Formation (the ore body), and the Devonian carbonates and evaporites that form the bedrock of the mine. Kearl Geoscientists are expected to develop the skills required to integrate data from multiple sources (coreholes, geophysics, block models and mine face observations) and to effectively collaborate with engineers and hydrogeologists to maintain a safe and efficient mining operation. Kearl offers an industry-leading opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to be part of a successful team operating in the Athabasca Oil Sands. Athabasca oil sands Imperial holds extensive undeveloped acreage with promising mining and in-situ development opportunities, and continues to evaluate new oil sand opportunities in Northeast Alberta. Imperial has submitted regulatory applications for future developments at the Aspen and Cold Lake Expansion projects using innovative solvent-assisted steam-assisted gravity drainage. Top reservoir time slice Point bar interpretation Tight oil and gas Imperial, through our affiliate XTO Energy Canada, has positions in several emerging tight oil and gas plays in Alberta and British Columbia.
3 Horn River unconventional shale gas The Horn River Basin, a significant shale gas play, is located in northeast British Columbia. Significant advances in horizontal drilling and fracturing technology have made development of this resource possible while development is currently slowed due to low gas prices. Geoscientists work with state of the art 3D seismic, micro-seismic, well log and core data to continue to evaluate and improve reservoir performance. Pruhdoe Bay Beaufort Sea Exploration Inuvik Norman Wells Whitehorse Iqualuit Yellowknife Horn River Kearl XTO Edmonton Cold Lake Victoria Vancouver Calgary Regina Winnipeg Montreal Halif Toronto Cold Lake heavy oil operations Cold Lake is one of the world s largest thermal in-situ heavy oil operations. Geoscientists working with the Cold Lake asset are involved in all aspects of geoscience including 2D, 3D and 4D seismic acquisition, processing, interpretation and inversion, as well as Development and Production well planning, well log and core analysis, mapping, geologic modeling and daily drilling operations.
4 Beaufort Sea exploration Imperial has a significant interest in about one million exploration acres in the Beaufort Sea. Imperial also holds working interest in discovered undeveloped oil and gas accumulations in the offshore Beaufort Sea and Mackenzie Delta area. 3D reservoir model of Hibernia reservoirs and wells. East Coast Through our affiliation with ExxonMobil Canada, development and production assignments in St. John s, NL are available to Imperial Geoscientists working on projects associated with the world-class Hibernia and Hebron oil fields and Sable gas field. Imperial also continues to evaluate exploration opportunities on the East Coast of Canada. St. John s Hibernia and Hebron ax Sable A world of opportunity Canada Calgary U.S.A. 5 Geoscience at Imperial Imperial and ExxonMobil take a rigorous, scientific approach to our oil and gas investment opportunities. Imperial s Geoscience Early Career Development Program offers world-class technical training, and excellent on-the-job personal mentoring. Assignments in exploration, development and production, geology and geophysics, frontier, conventional and oil sands projects are available. Early assignments are designed to build a comprehensive base of knowledge across the geoscience skill areas. Technical and management/leadership career opportunities are obtainable, all while enjoying a highly competitive and comprehensive compensation package. The Network Advisor Program (NAP) provides recent career hires and students working in Calgary with an opportunity to network with other employees, management and senior technical professionals in an informal, corporate wide social environment. Balancing life in and outside Imperial Imperial supports staff through flexible work options including part-time work, parental and educational leaves of absence, and flexible work schedules. Volunteer opportunities are available through United Way. Local office social and sport networks exist through our Calgary Social Club. Geoscience research and sponsorships ExxonMobil invests millions of dollars annually in geoscience research and training at their Upstream Research Company in Houston, Texas. Imperial has access to ExxonMobil s worldwide research, training, global experience and worldclass technical expertise in all fields of geoscience and engineering. Imperial Geoscience contributes to select academic researchers and sponsors select student events and professional associations and conferences. We sponsor the AAPG Imperial Barrel Awards gift for university students, the CSEG Student Industry Field trip, as well as student conferences and research programs at several universities across Canada. Ergonomics Ergonomics deals with the design of equipment to reduce operator fatigue and discomfort. Employees have access to one-on-one consultations preformed by a professional ergonomist. Our employees utilize sit/stand workstations, alternative mousing devices (including voice recognition, tablets) and adjustable chairs. Imperial campus in Calgary Located in Quarry Park, approximately 16 kilometres southeast of downtown Calgary on 20 acres of land. Complex includes five, modern, energy efficient multi-storey buildings accommodating ~3,000 people in a highly collaborative environment. Equipped with the latest technological tools allowing you to work effectively throughout the campus, both inside and outside.
