1 SECOND CIRCULAR & CALL FOR ABSTRACTS FIRST IGCP/SIDA-616Y MEETING YAOUNDE, CAMEROON December 03-08, 2012 BACGROUND OF THE IGCP/SIDA project 616 The project aims at understanding the crustal architecture and regional geology of west central Africa, the geology of which is still poorly known and still to be mapped in detail into a regional Gondwana context. The project will integrate basement studies with paleoclimate, neotectonics, geomorphology and landscape evolution. The framework of geodynamic processes has been established in previous studies but, the deformation mechanism of the major tectonic units and tectonic boundaries, and the interpretation of the orogenic evolution of the Neoproterozoic belt north of the Congo craton are still controversial. Reactivation of early formed shear zones may have controlled the pattern of Mesozoic continental rifting and breakup, with formation of associated basin. This is obviously of interest to geologists on both sides of the Atlantic, as it can lead to a better integration of the onshore and offshore geology. When deep Precambrian structures do reactivate, the manner of their reactivation and its precise influence on later structural development is poorly defined. Moreover, fundamental knowledge on paleoclimate and neotectonics, and their importance in the shaping of present-day landscape is lacking or sparse. The IGCP/SIDA project 616 co-lead by B. Kankeu (Cameroon), R. O. Greiling, and J. Runge (Germany) therefore involves an interdisciplinary approach involving tectonics, petrology, geophysics paleoclimatology, geomorphology and physical geography in the sub-region embracing Cameroon, Chad, Central Africa Republic, Sudan, Nigeria and Brazil. 1

2 AIMS OF THE MEETING This meeting aims to: Bridge the gap between scientific effort and public interest, giving the public an insight into the nature of major geological structures and tectonic processes that directly affect their lives. Not just for earth science students and researchers but also for the general public and governments who have a stake in the management of natural resources (minerals, water, petroleum ), geohazard mitigation, and in understanding landscape evolution for urban, national and international infrastructural planning, agricultural, commercial recreational and urban use; Promote interaction between different disciplines in the Earth Sciences, notably, regional geology, tectonics, petrology, geophysics, paleoclimatology, geomorphology and physical geography; Introduce and promote graduate and post-graduate training of students and other highly qualified personnel, thus facilitating collaboration in the utilization of research facilities between scientists from different countries and institutions. Two training courses are proposed on the general theme Modern field and laboratory based techniques applied to geosciences. This includes satellite imagery, advanced (GPS, AMS) structural mapping, and EMR investigations; with examples of their application to geological mapping, water resource investigations, structural geology and problems of quaternary geology in Central Africa; Understand in detail, the crustal architecture, tectonic evolution and regional geology of major tectonic structures that bound the cratonic blocks of Central Africa and their connection with NE Brazil; Elucidate the formation and structural reactivation of the continental crust in Central African and NE Brazil, paying special attention to Mesozoic continental rifting and breakup episodes, leading to a better integration of onshore (mid Atlantic) and offshore (Central African - NE Brazil) regional geology. GENERAL MEETING PROGRAMME Registration and Reception: 03 December 2012 Scientific Sessions: December 2012 Post-conference field trip: December 2012 MEETING SECRETARIAT IGCP/SIDA Project number 616 Secretariat Institute for Geological and Mining Research (IRGM) BP 4110, NLongkak, Yaoundé, Cameroon. 3 SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM The principal theme of this IGCP/SIDA Project 616 first meeting is: Tectonic Processes, Paleoclimate and Landscape Evolution: New Methods and Technologies Meeting sessions S1 Igneous and metamorphic petrology Distribution and characterization of regional igneous and metamorphic rocks S2 Tectonics S.2.1 Regional tectonic features, development of major shear zones or tectonic boundaries in Central Africa and contiguous parts of Gondwana. S.2.2 Mesozoic and Cenozoic tectonics and the formation and evolution of associated rift sedimentary basins. S.3 Neotectonics, Seismo-tectonics and seismic hazards S.3.1 Neotectonic investigations (with particular emphasis on Remote Sensing, calibrated and ground-truthed through fieldwork). S.3.2 Youngest movements and deformation of the continental crust (quantification of recent stress fields) in Central Africa and NE Brazil, and their correlations with recent regional seismicity. S.4 Paleoclimate, geomorphology, landscape and/or human evolution S.4.1 Paleoenvironmental analyses and investigation of geomorphic and pedological features, and quantification of landscape forming processes. S.4.2 Climate change and its impact on the Quaternary tropical African environment (landform, sedimentation, drainage patterns, soil and landscape S.5 Medical Geology The above sessions are proposed based on the general work plan of the IGCP/SIDA-616 project. WORKSHOP AND SHORT COURSES WS 1 Landscape and human evolution in Sub-Saharan Africa The objectives of this workshop are to (1) identify and review current landform and landform forming processes, with respect to urban, national and international infrastructural planning, agricultural, commercial and recreative use; (2) share knowledge and experience on the major challenges of landscape and/or human evolution in Sub-Saharan Africa and find practical approaches for addressing them; (3) discuss the successes and shortcomings of efforts to protected landscape and come up with an effective roadmap, providing recommendations for direction of the project in the future. WS2 Tectonics, neotectonics, seismo-tectonics and seismic hazards Tectonic processes and how they control our environment. A full description of this workshop will be posted in the IGCP/SIDA-616 web page (in process). WS3 Workshop summary and resolutions This will be focused on a discussion of the future of the IGCP/SIDA-616 Project and recommendations. It will take place in the Atlantic port city of Kribi, before the end of the field trip. 3

4 TRAINING COURSE The general theme of these courses is Modern field and laboratory-based techniques applied to the geosciences. These include: Satellite Imagery applied to geology, paleoclimatology, geomorphology and environmental management, advanced structural mapping (GPS, AMS) and EMR investigations. The proposed courses will be offered as a single integrated unit (one day on 03 December 2012). Full details will appear in the IGCP/SIDA-616 web site. FIELD TRIP We propose a field trip for three days (05 08 December 2012). Day 1 1. Structures associated with the development of the major Pan-African Yaoundé (Cameroon)- Oubanguides (RCA) and Sergipano belt (NE Brazil): Dominant subhorizontal foliation in high grade gneiss and in low to medium grade metasediments, outcrop to map-scale folds that affected the main foliation and discussion on possible correlation of structural history and lithologic units into an original Gondwana. 2. Postulated contact between crystalline nappe structures and Archean Congo Craton (CC) 3. Tectonic landforms, inselbergs, geomorphic features and scenery. 4. Alluvial sediments and paleosurfaces Day 2 1. Lithology and structures of the northern Archean Congo Congo 2. Landform and landform forming processes 3. Mature valley surfaces 4. Steep and staircase topographic relief between coastal and hinterland surfaces 5. Neotectonics and geomorphic evolution of the coastal margin 6. Flood plains Day 3 1.
