(AVES: PASSERIFORMES) IN THE IZA VALLEY, MARAMURES (ROMANIA) ANGELA PETRESCU, IOSIF B~RE$ On signale la presence du Bruant fou Emberiza cia cia L. dans la vallee de la rivibre Iza (Maramure?), les IocalitCs oh il a CtC observe - Vadul Izei, Blrsana et Strlmtura - constituant la limite nordique de repartition de cet oiseau en Roumanie. The rock bunting, Emberiza cia cia L., was observed by Almasy in May 1897 in Dobrogea, at Babadag, Caraman-Chioi and Cataloi (Almasy, 1898), and Dombrowski (1912) quotes it. Linfia (1944, 1946) adds some new localities where it observed and collected it, in Banat region (Cozla, Toplef, Plavi~evita, Oravifa, Moldova Noui). Nadra (1972) repeats these localities in his catalogue. Nadra and Tilpeanu (1974) consider the rock bunting as a sedentary and occassionally breeding bird in the Iron Gates region. In Moldova it was collected at Oclo~ (Rang, 1980). In Oltenia it was observed and collected at Cloqani (Papadopol, 1982, 1984), the Olt-river valley (Miitieq, ) and in some points from the Parsng-V2lcan mountains and the Petroqani depression (Popescu, 1972). In the collection of the "Grigore Antipa" National Museum of Natural History there are three specimens collected at Ri~inari (Sibiu) and Sasca Montani (Cara9-Severin) (Papadopol and Tiilpeanu, 1987). Near Bra~ov, a specimen was collected in 1980 at Turche~ and is still preserved in the Hausmann collection (Ciochia and Barbu, 1983). These authors consider the species sedentary and breeding in this region. Kovats (1970) makes a synthesis of the situation of this species in Transsylvania, adding new localities from the Bihor region, and extending the Northern and Western limits of the line that Dandl traced in 1958: Moldova Nouii, Hateg, Turda, Cheile Bicazului. Betfia (Oradea) is the North-Western limit of this bird in Romania.

2 142 ANGELA PETRESCU, IOSIF BGRES Nowadays Emberiza cia is a breeding species only in a few localities of our country, in rocky regions with vegetation, as it results from the recent publications fciochia, 1992; Munteanu, Weber and Papadopol, 1994). BCreq collected a male near the locality Vadul Izei (6 km upstream on Iza from Sighetul Marmafiei) in a rocky slope habitat on the Iza' valley newly-planted with pines and spruce firs in The specimen (prepared as a skin) has the following sizes (in mm): total length - 163; bill - 11; wing - 80; tarsus - 20; tail BCreq considered at that time (1980) to be collected during the passage of the species through the Maramure~ Depression. Studying the faunal diversity in Maramureq Depression, we oberved (5.VII.1995) near the locality Biirsana a male of the rock bunting in the valley of the Iza river, with rocky vertical walls, covered with bushes, a typical biotope of this bird (Fig. 1). We saw 3 males and a female in an orchard near the locality Striimtura in 8.VII.1995 (Fig. 2 A). We captured one male (10.VII.1995), now conserved in alcohol in the collection of the "Grigore Antipa" National Museum of Natural History (Fig. 2 B). Its sizes (in mm) are: total length - 170; bill - 11; wing - 79; wing span - 230; tarsus - 23; tail It seems not be a frequent bird. Although we have no concrete proofs of his breeding in this zone, the fact that we watched males and females during the breeding season, allows us to supose that in might breed in Maramureq, where the rock bunting is mentioned for the first time. This is the Northern limit of its area in Romania. EMBERIZA CIA CIA L. A fost capturat un mascul la Vadul Izei (martie, 1980), preparat ca balg in colectiile Muzeului din Sighetul Marmafiei $i un mascul la Strtimtura (iulie, 1995), aflat in colectiile Muzeului National de Istorie Natural2,,Grigore Antipa". Aceasta este. prima semnalare a speciei Emberiza cia cia L. in Maramure~, limita nordic2 a r2spiindirii ei in Romiinia.
