1 Trav. Mus Hist. nal. &rigore Antipa* Vol. XXXIV pp IS nov HILARA DELTAICA N. SP. FROM THE DANUBE DELTA AND OTHER DATA ON SOME HILARA SPECIES (DIPTERA: EMPIDIDAE) OF ROMANIA On dmt une nouvelle e sph et on pr6sente (avec I'illustration de I'armature g6nitale des mgles) la distribution des autres 6 esphces du genre Hilara Mcigen, 1822, en Roumanie; Hilara breviviltala Macq., 1L merula Collin et 11. subpollinosa Collin mnt mention& pour la premikre fois en Rournanie. Hilara genus consists of small and middle-sized dipterans (2-7 mm), of a dull colour (brown-olive or black). Having a general view it can be characterized by the swollen (dilated) metatarsus of the fore legs. Taking into consideration the resemblances of the external morphology, as well as the absence of the genitalia illustration, the identifications are doubtful. In Romania, due to the recent contributions (Pirvu, 1991, 1992, 1993, C e i a n u, 1992) it has been established the presence of 38 species of this genus, 2 of them being described from Romania. On the base of 15 specimens collected between 1% from the Danube Delta, the Southern Carpathians and the Romania Plain, a new species for science, Hilara deltaica n. sp., 3 unmentioned species for the Romanian fauna have been identified as well as another 3 species to which the male genitalia is illustrated for the first time on a Romania material. It is also mentioned their distribution. The newly mentioned species are written with bold letters. Hilara brevivittata Macquart, 1827: Id, Poiana Neamtului (Sibiu Department), 14.V.1986, leg. Ioana Matache. For the identification authentification I have illustrated both the leg I (Fig. 1 A) and the elements of the male genitalia (Fig. 1 B-H). Distribution. France, Great Britain, Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Poland, Russia(Chv6la and Wagner, 1989). Hilara chorica (FallCn, 1816): 1 d, Comana (Giurgiu Department), 20.V.1982, leg. C. PSrvu. It is known from the Harghita Department (Pirvu, 1992) and CGmpulung Moldovenesc (C e i a n u, 1992). As yet, there weren't made illustrations of the Romanian material, a gap being removed on this occasion (Fig. 2 A-G).

4 Hilara clypeata Meigen, 1822: 18, Bistret (Dolj Department), 1.VI.1982, leg. C. PArvu. It has been mentioned from Azuga (Prahova Department), Gheorgheni and Tulgheq (Harghita Department), Lotrioara and Mggura Cisngdiei (Sibiu Department), Mete$ (Alba Department) (PA r v u, 1992) and Csmpulung Moldovenesc (Ce i an u, 1992). As for the previous species, we have illustrated the Romanian material (Fig. 3 A-H). Hilara deltaica n. sp. (Figs 4,s) Material. Holotype: d, C. A. Rosetti (the Danube Delta), 10.V.1964, leg. Xenia Scobiola. Paratype: 18, Periprava (the Danube Delta), 13.V.1964, leg. Medeea Weinberg. The holotype is preserved in the collections of the "Grigore Antipa" Museum, inventory number and the paratype in the same place, inventory number Diagnosis. Body length: 3,5 mm. The general colour of the body is black, grey dusted, but brown at the antennae and acrostichals joints; proboscis longer than the head length; wings has brown-reddish veins and costal stigma, as well as the fore legs. Derivatio nominis. The name comes from the Danube Delta, the place where the material was collected from. Description. Head. Occiput with grey dust. Ocellar hairs equal in length with the frontal ones. There are 2 rows of postocular hairs, the posterior ones being longer than the anterior ones. Frons is black, brown dusted around the black antenae joint (Fig. 4 B). Palpi are dark brown, with many black hairs, one of them (or two) being longer and thicker than the others. Proboscis brown, longer than the head length. Thorax. It is black, grey dusted (it becomes brown in the acrostichals area). Pleurae are naked. Pronotum with some short black hairs. Mesonoturn has the following chaetotaxy: humeral zone has a long black intrahumeral with a tuft of short hairs; also there are two posthumerals, one prealar and one supraalar. Acrostichals biserial, long, strong and black; uniserial dorsocentrals end towards scutellum with a strong bristle, each, as long as scutellars. Scutellum has on its margin 4 bristles, the outer ones smaller than the inner ones which are long and strong. Wings (Fig. 4 C) have brown-reddish veins and stigma. Squarnae are brownyellowish with a dark marginal stripe and yellow cilia. Halters have reddish petiol and a dark knob.

7 HILARA DELTAICQ N. SP. AND OTHER HILARA SPECIES OF ROMANIA 63 Legs. Fore legs (including coxae) have the amber colour, the others are darker. All coxae have a strong pilosity, coxae 111 being less hairy. Trochanters I and I1 and knees are brown-reddish. Leg I: anterodorsally, the femur has a row of 6-7 longer hairs, inclined towards its apex and two long preapicals, almost perpendicular on the axis of this article; dorsally, tibia has 2 bristle rows, long, inclined towards its apex, 3-4 of them being stronger; metatarsus is swolen (Fig. 4 A), inner side is almost streight, the outer one, curved, no tarsal article has bristles. Leg 11: anteroventrally the femur has a row of 5-6 bristles and tibia has 2-3 bristles on the antero- and posteroventral side. Leg 111: the femur has a preapical and tibia has 2-3 anterodorsal bristles. Abdomen is brown with a black pilosity. As regards genitalia I illustrated the genital capsule in a lateral view (Fig. 5 D), the right lamella (Fig. 5 E) which distinguishes this species from the other Hilara species, cerci (Fig. 5 A), aedeagus (Fig. 5 B), a detail of the hypandrium (Fig. 5 C). Hilara maura (Fabricius, 1776): 1 6, Poiana Neamtului, 14.V.1986, leg. Ioana Matache. Mentioned from Biiile Herculane and Harghita (P P r v u, 1992) (Fig. 6 A-F). Hilara merula Collin, 1927: 1 6, Caraorman (the Danube Delta) (without other data), 16, Bgile Herculane, 16.1X.1983, leg. V1. Bradescu. I illustrated the leg.
