OUTLINE PURPOSE MUDLOG MEASUREMENTS MUDLOG PROS and CONS MUDLOGGING INTERPRETATION AND EXAMPLES Marcellus, PA (normalizing for data mining) Niobrara, CO (TOC contribution/data mining) Wyodak Coals, WY (best practices) RESOURCES MEASURED DEFINTIONS THEORY MODEL SUMMARY AND DISCUSSION Unconventional Reservoir Assessment using Mudlogging Slide 5of 44
OVERVIEW-Purpose Understand rocks, fluids and flow mechanisms to exploit the oil and gas resources effectively and efficiently Decline Curve Analysis Versus Formation Evaluation Mudlog formation evaluation Predict well performance Corroborate other formation evaluation tools Determine if well performance fully exploits resources Exploration (analogs, ranking, scoring, analytics) When other logs are not available; drilling, HZ wells, Geosteering and supervise OH logging, Coring, DST Other (safety, organized record, second opinion) Unconventional Reservoir Assessment using Mudlogging Slide 6 of 44
OVERVIEW-Purpose Mudlogging defines and helps stay in zone AKW Analytics/Range Resources Unconventional Reservoir Assessment using Mudlogging Slide 7 of 44
MUDLOG MEASUREMENTS What does mudlogging measure, record and present? The basic mudlog records: 1) drilling rate 2) gas measured at the mudlogging unit 3) cutting properties; lithology and the presence of oil Mudlogging data is recorded over time The mudlog presents the above parameters and others as a function of depth, not time which requires a transform called lagging. Unconventional Reservoir Assessment using Mudlogging Slide 8 of 44
MUDLOG MEASUREMENTS Unconventional Reservoir Assessment using Mudlogging Slide 9 of 44
MUDLOGGING IS EFFECTIVE BECAUSE: 1-Mudlogging is independent of theories and models 2-Gas is a vapor measured at the surface under STP 3-Gas is insoluble in water and drilling mud 4-Gas expands as it travels to the surface MUDLOG PROS AND CONS Debra Higley Unconventional Reservoir Assessment using Mudlogging Slide 10 of 44

MUDLOG PROS AND CONS Walt Kelly Unconventional Reservoir Assessment using Mudlogging Slide 14of 44
MUDLOG PROS AND CONS MUDLOGGING IS INEFFECTIVE BECAUSE: Whole measurement system is not calibrated (rubber ruler) Measurements cannot be repeated No standard methods, sensors, calibration or presentation Flushing in front of bit Surface measurement system not well understood Open drilling/bell nipple allow gas to escape Gas trap not unstable and linear Ambient temperature varies Not well understood by industry Unconventional Reservoir Assessment using Mudlogging Slide 15 of 44
