2 I can use fundamental skills related to scientific processes and labs Core Text: Pearson Interactive 7skills of science, scientific thinking skills, scientific reasoning skills, steps to scientific method, parts of a lab I have, who has Act outs for some of the skills of science lab report Formative: entrance and exit tickets, homework, hot/warm/cool/cold answers, thumbs, clothespins Summative: end of chapter test Scientific Investigations: heart rate lab Unit 2: Fundamentals of Science Measurement I can calculate density, mode, median, mean, range, volume and temperature I know how to safely perform a scientific investigation in the lab and in the field and what to do if an accident occurs I know why scientists use the SI system (metric system) and the names of common SI units Core Text: Pearson Interactive ALL SI units of measurement, mass, volume, density, length, width, height, weight, time

3 Meters, Liters and Grams song Posters safety symbols Bill Nye video Brain pop Formative: thumbs up, middle, down clothespins, hot/warm/cool/cold answers entrance and exit tickets, questioning in class Summative: lab report, end of unit test Scientific Investigations: Lab using the SI units for mass, length, width, height, volume, time, temperature, density Unit 3: Rocks and Minerals I know and can name the 5 characteristics of minerals AND the 9 properties to ID minerals I can explain the 4 ways minerals form I know and can name the 3 types of rocks and how each forms I know how the rock cycle is constant and has no definite beginning/end I know and can name the 4 processes that form sedimentary rocks and the 3 types of sedimentary rocks I know how igneous rocks form and the 2 types and examples I know and can explain how the 3 fossil fuels form, their uses and why they are non renewable I know and can name the 2 types of metamorphic rock, what it is used for and how it forms rocks, minerals, sedimentary, intrusive, extrusive, banded, non banded, 9 properties of minerals to ID, igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic, rock cycle, fossil fuels

4 Rock cycle Rap interactive lab on minerals to ID unknown minerals Act outs to the rock cycle rap song Formative: warm/hot/cold/cool answers, thumbs, clothespins, entrance/exit tickets Summative: Rocks and Minerals test Scientific Investigations: interactive lab on minerals, perform scratch tests and streak tests in class Unit 4: Weathering and Soil Horizons I know the 5 ways rocks weather CHEMICALLY and the 5 ways rocks weather MECHANICALLY and the 2 factors that affect the speed of weathering and what uniformitarianism is By using your knowledge of the soil, create a fiction or non fiction book I know what soil is made from and the 3 ways to classify soil. I know what is in each soil layer or horizon and how living things affect the soil I know why soil is valuable and how to conserve our soil I know the 3 ways we change the land, why soil management is important, how the Dust Bowl affected Americans and the effects of poor soil management weathering, uniformitarianism, bedrock, soil, soil texture, fertility, ph, loam, decomposers, humus, soil conservation methods, poor soil management practices Guest speaker soil horizons song non fiction book/fiction book Formative: clothespins, hot/cool/cold/warm answers, thumbs, entrance and exit tickets Summative: Non fiction book or fiction book creation rubric
